The general, when all the captives and money had been carried away, left the city deserted and led his army against Bola, another city of the Latins.
It happened that the Bolani also had foreknown his approach and had prepared everything necessary for the contest.
Now Marcius, as if to take the city at the first assault, made attacks on many parts of the wall; but the Bolani, having waited for a favorable opportunity, opened the gates, and rushing out in large numbers in order and discipline, clashed with those in front of them, and having killed many of them and wounded still more, and having forced the rest to retreat disgracefully, returned to the city.
When Marcius learned of the rout of the Volscians—for he did not happen to be present at the place where the disaster occurred—he arrived in haste with a few men, and taking up those who had been scattered from the rout, he rallied and encouraged them; and when he had formed them into ranks, having pointed out what they ought to do, he ordered them to attack the city at the same gates.
And when the Bolani again employed the same attempt and rushed out in large numbers, the Volscians did not receive them, but turning away, they fled down the slope, just as the general had suggested to them; and the Bolani, not knowing the deception, pursued them for a long distance.
But when they were far from the city, Marcius, with the select of the young men, advanced to close quarters with the Bolani; and a great slaughter of them occurred there, both of those who defended themselves and of those who fled.
And following those who were pressing toward the city, he anticipated them, forcing his way inside the wall before the gates could be shut.
Once the general became master of the gates, the rest of the Volscian multitude followed, and the Bolani, abandoning the wall, fled to their houses.
Having become master of this city as well, he permitted the soldiers to enslave the inhabitants and plunder the property; and having carried away all the booty in the same manner as before, with time and in complete security, after this he set fire to the city.
