§8.16.1οἱ δὲ παρὰ τούτων τὴν ἀρχὴν παραλαβόντες, Σπόριος Ναύτιος καὶ Σέξτος Φούριος, στρατιάν θʼ ὅσην ἐδύναντο πλείστην ἐκ τοῦ πολιτικοῦ κατεστήσαντο καταλόγου, καὶ φρυκτωρίας καὶ σκοποὺς ἐν τοῖς ἐπικαιροτάτοις φρουρίοις ἔταξαν, ἵνα μηδὲν ἀγνοήσωσι τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς χώρας πραττομένων· χρήματά τε καὶ σῖτον καὶ ὅπλα ἐν ὀλίγῳ χρόνῳ πολλὰ ἡτοιμάσαντο.
Those who took over the office from them, Spurius Nautius and Sextus Furius, enrolled from the citizen muster-roll an army as large as they possibly could, and stationed beacon-fires and scouts in the most opportune strongholds, so that they might remain ignorant of nothing that was being done in the country; they also prepared, in a short time, a great amount of money, grain, and arms.
§8.16.2τὰ μὲν οὖν οἰκεῖα παρεσκεύαστο αὐτοῖς ὡς ἐνῆν ἄριστα, καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῶν ἔτι δεῖν ἐδόκει· τὰ δὲ συμμαχικὰ οὐχ ἅπαντα ὑπήκουε προθύμως ἑκούσιά τʼ οὐκ ἦν, οἷα συνάρασθαι τοῦ πολέμου, ὥστʼ οὐδὲ προσαναγκάζειν αὐτὰ ἠξίουν φοβούμενοι προδοσίαν.
Thus, their domestic affairs had been prepared by them as well as possible, and there seemed to be no further need of anything for them; but the affairs of the allies did not all respond eagerly, nor were they willing, such as to take part in the war, so that the consuls did not even think fit to compel them, fearing treachery.
ἤδη δέ τινα καὶ ἀφίστατο αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ φανεροῦ καὶ τοῖς Οὐολούσκοις συνελάμβανε.
Indeed, some of them were already openly revolting from them and assisting the Volscians.
§8.16.3πρῶτοι δʼ ἦρξαν Αἰκανοὶ τῆς ἀποστάσεως, ἅμα τῷ συστῆναι τὸν πόλεμον εὐθὺς ἐλθόντες ὡς τοὺς Οὐολούσκους καὶ συμμαχίαν μεθʼ ὅρκων συνθέμενοι, στρατιάν τʼ ἀπέστειλαν οὗτοι τῷ Μαρκίῳ πλείστην τε καὶ προθυμοτάτην.
The Aequians were the first to begin the revolt; as soon as the war broke out, they went immediately to the Volscians and concluded an alliance with oaths, and they sent to Marcius a very large and most eager army.
ἀρξαμένων δὲ τούτων πολλοὶ καὶ τῶν ἄλλων συμμάχων κρύφα συνελάμβανον τοῖς Οὐολούσκοις οὐκ ἀπὸ ψηφισμάτων οὐδʼ ἀπὸ κοινοῦ δόγματος ἀποστέλλοντες αὐτοῖς τὰς συμμαχίας, εἰ δέ τισιν ἦν βουλομένοις μετέχειν τῆς στρατείας τῶν σφετέρων, οὐχ ὅπως ἀποτρέποντες, ἀλλὰ καὶ παρορμῶντες.
When they had begun, many of the other allies also secretly assisted the Volscians, not sending them allied forces by decrees or by a common decision, but, if any of their own people wished to take part in the campaign, far from discouraging them, they even encouraged them.
§8.16.4ἐγεγόνει τʼ ἐν οὐ πολλῷ χρόνῳ τοσαύτη δύναμις περὶ τοὺς Οὐολούσκους, ὅσην οὐ πώποτʼ ἔσχον, ὅτε μάλιστʼ ἤκμαζον ταῖς πόλεσιν· ἣν ἐπαγόμενος ὁ Μάρκιος ἐνέβαλεν αὖθις εἰς τὴν Ῥωμαίων γῆν, καὶ ἐγκαθεζόμενος ἡμέρας συχνὰς ἐδῄου τῆς γῆς, ὅσην ἐν τῇ πρότερον εἰσβολῇ παρέλιπε.
And in a short time there assembled around the Volscians so great a force as they had never possessed even when they were most flourishing in their cities; leading this, Marcius invaded the Roman territory again, and remaining there for many days, he ravaged as much of the land as he had left untouched during his former incursion.
§8.16.5σωμάτων μὲν οὖν ἐλευθέρων οὐκέτι πολλῶν ἐγκρατὴς ἐγένετο κατὰ ταύτην τὴν στρατείαν· οἱ γὰρ ἄνθρωποι τὰ πλείστου ἄξια συσκευασάμενοι παλαίτερον ἔτι κατεπεφεύγεσαν, οἱ μὲν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, οἱ δʼ εἰς τὰ πλησίον φρούρια, εἴ τινα ἦν ἐχυρώτατα·
Thus, in this campaign he did not get possession of many free persons; for the people, having packed up their most valuable effects, had fled long before, some to the city and others to the neighboring strongholds, whichever were the most secure.
τὰ δὲ βοσκήματα αὐτῶν, ὅσα οὐχ οἷοί τʼ ἦσαν ἀπελάσαι, καὶ τοὺς νέμοντας θεράποντας λαμβάνει τόν τε σῖτον τὸν ἐπὶ ταῖς ἅλωσιν ἔτι κείμενον καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους καρπούς, τοὺς μὲν ἐν χερσὶν ὄντας, §8.16.6τοὺς δὲ καὶ συγκεκομισμένους ἀναιρεῖται.
But he captured those of their herds which they had not been able to drive away, and the slaves who tended them, as well as the grain still lying on the threshing-floors and the other crops, some of which were in hand, and others already gathered in.
προνομεύσας δὲ καὶ διαπορθήσας ἅπαντα οὐθενὸς ὁμόσε χωρῆσαι τολμήσαντος ἀπῆγεν ἐπʼ οἴκου τὴν στρατιὰν βαρεῖαν οὖσαν ἤδη τῷ πλήθει τῶν ὠφελειῶν καὶ σχολῇ πορευομένην.
Having plundered and devastated everything, and since no one dared to come to close quarters, he led his army back home, which was now heavy with the abundance of booty and marching slowly.
