§8.12.1ἀποδεξαμένων δὲ καὶ ταύτην τὴν γνώμην τῶν Οὐολούσκων ἐξῄεσαν οἱ στρατηγοὶ διὰ ταχέων, πρὶν ἔκπυστα γενέσθαι Ῥωμαίοις τὰ βουλεύματα, πολλὴν ἐπαγόμενοι στρατιὰν ἑκούσιον· ἧς μέρος μὲν ὁ Τύλλος ἔχων εἰς τὴν Λατίνων χώραν ἐνέβαλεν, ἵνα περισπάσειε τῶν πολεμίων τὴν ἐκεῖθεν ἐπικουρίαν, τὸ δὲ λοιπὸν ὁ Μάρκιος ἄγων ἐπὶ τὴν Ῥωμαίων ἤλασεν.
And when the Volscians had approved this proposal too, the generals marched out quickly, before their plans became known to the Romans, leading a large volunteer army; of which Tullus, having one part, invaded the country of the Latins in order to divert the enemy's assistance from there, while Marcius, leading the rest, marched against the country of the Romans.
§8.12.2οἷα δʼ ἀπροσδοκήτου τοῦ κακοῦ τοῖς κατὰ τὴν χώραν διατρίβουσιν ἐπιπεσόντος πολλὰ μὲν ἑάλω σώματα Ῥωμαίων ἐλεύθερα, πολλὰ δʼ ἀνδράποδα, βοῶν τε καὶ ὑποζυγίων καὶ τῶν ἄλλων βοσκημάτων χρῆμα οὐκ ὀλίγον· σῖτός θʼ ὅσος ἐγκατελήφθη καὶ σίδηρος καὶ ὅσοις ἄλλοις χώρα γεωργεῖται, τὰ μὲν ἡρπάσθη, τὰ δὲ διεφθάρη.
And since this disaster fell unexpectedly upon those who were staying in the countryside, many free persons of the Romans were captured, and many slaves, and no small quantity of oxen, beasts of burden, and other cattle; and as much grain as was left behind, and iron, and whatever other things with which land is cultivated, some were plundered, others destroyed.
τελευτῶντες γὰρ καὶ πῦρ εἰς τὰς αὐλὰς φέροντες ἐνέβαλλον Οὐολοῦσκοι, ὥστε πολλοῦ χρόνου μηδʼ §8.12.3ἀναλαβεῖν αὐτὰς δύνασθαι τοὺς ἀποβαλόντας.
For in the end the Volscians also brought and threw fire into the farmsteads, so that for a long time neither those who had lost them were able to recover them.
μάλιστα δὲ τοῦτʼ ἔπασχον αἱ τῶν δημοτῶν κτήσεις, αἱ δὲ τῶν πατρικίων ἔμειναν ἀσινεῖς· εἰ δέ τινες ἐβλάβησαν, εἰς ἀνδράποδα καὶ βοσκήματα ἔδοξαν βλαβῆναι.
And it was the possessions of the plebeians that suffered this most, while those of the patricians remained unharmed; and if any were damaged, they seemed to be damaged only in respect of slaves and cattle.
τοῦτο γὰρ ὑπὸ τοῦ Μαρκίου παρηγγέλλετο τοῖς Οὐολούσκοις, ἵνα δι’ ὑποψίας ἔτι μᾶλλον οἱ πατρίκιοι γένοιντο τοῖς δημοτικοῖς καὶ μὴ ἐξαιρεθείη τὸ στασιάζον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως, §8.12.4ὅπερ καὶ συνέβη.
For this was ordered to the Volscians by Marcius, so that the patricians might become even more suspected by the plebeians and the seditious element might not be removed from the city, which indeed happened.
ὡς γὰρ ἠγγέλθη τοῖς Ῥωμαίοις ἡ καταδρομὴ τῆς χώρας, καὶ ἔγνωσαν οὐκ ἐξ ἴσου γεγονυῖαν ἅπασι τὴν συμφοράν, κατεβόων μὲν τῶν πλουσίων οἱ πένητες ὡς ἐπαγόντων σφίσι τὸν Μάρκιον, ἀπελογοῦντο δʼ οἱ πατρίκιοι καὶ κακουργίαν τινὰ τοῦ στρατηγοῦ ταύτην ἀπέφαινον.
For when the raid on the country was reported to the Romans, and they learned that the disaster had not happened equally to all, the poor cried out against the rich, on the ground that they were bringing Marcius upon them, while the patricians defended themselves and showed this to be some malice of the general.
βοηθεῖν δὲ τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις ἢ σώζειν τὰ περιόντα διʼ ὑποψίαν τʼ ἀλλήλων καὶ δέος προδοσίας οὐθεὶς ἠξίου· ὥστε κατὰ πολλὴν ἄδειαν ὁ Μάρκιος ἀπῆγε τὴν στρατιὰν καὶ κατέστησεν ἅπαντας ἐπὶ τὰ οἰκεῖα παθόντας μὲν οὐδὲν δεινόν, δράσαντας δʼ ὅσα ἠξίουν, καὶ πολλῶν εὐπορήσαντας χρημάτων.
But no one saw fit to help those who were perishing or to save what remained, because of their mutual suspicion and fear of treachery; so that with great impunity Marcius led back his army and restored them all to their homes, having suffered nothing terrible, but having done all they wished, and having gained great wealth.
§8.12.5ἧκε δὲ καὶ ὁ Τύλλος ὀλίγον ὕστερον ἐκ τῆς Λατίνων χώρας πολλὰς ἐπαγόμενος ὠφελείας· οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐκεῖ δύναμιν ἔσχον ὁμόσε χωρεῖν τοῖς πολεμίοις ἀπαράσκευοί τʼ ὄντες καὶ παρʼ ἐλπίδα τοῦ δεινοῦ σφίσιν ἐπιπεσόντος.
And Tullus also returned a little later from the country of the Latins, bringing much booty; for neither there did they have the power to face the enemy, being both unprepared and because the danger had fallen upon them contrary to expectation.
ἐκ δὲ τούτου πᾶσα πόλις ἐπῆρτο ταῖς ἐλπίσι, καὶ θᾶττον ἢ ὡς ἄν τις ὑπέλαβεν ἥ τε καταγραφὴ τῶν στρατιωτῶν ἐγίνετο, καὶ τἆλλα ὑπηρετεῖτο, ὅσων τοῖς στρατηγοῖς ἔδει.
And after this, every city was raised up in hopes, and quicker than anyone would have supposed, the levy of the soldiers was made, and other things were provided, whatever the generals needed.
