And Marcius, who had been the first and in advance of many to withstand the enemy, and had become the most illustrious of all the Romans both in the assault on the walls and in the combats within the city, appeared even more illustrious in the second battle which arose against the Antiates.
For he did not think it right to be left behind in this battle either, but as soon as the city was captured, taking with him the few who were able to follow, he advanced at a run, and having caught up with the forces already drawn up and about to come to blows, he was the first to announce the capture of the city to his own men, showing as proof of it the smoke which was carried in abundance from the burned houses, and having besought the consul, he chose his post against the strongest part of the enemy.
And when the signals for battle were raised, he was the first to advance to close quarters with the opponents, and having slain many of those who came to blows with him, he forced his way into the midst of their phalanx.
And the Antiates no longer endured to fight with him hand to hand, but abandoned their ranks wherever he came attacking them, but stood around him in a body in a circle, and threw their missiles while retreating as he advanced and pursued.
And Postumius, when he learned this, fearing lest the man, being isolated, might suffer some harm, sent the strongest of the young men to his aid; and they, having made their companies dense, charged the enemy.
And since those in front of them did not receive them but turned to flight, they, advancing further, found Marcius full of wounds and saw around him many lying dead and half-dead.
After this, they now advanced in common, having Marcius as leader, against those who still remained in their ranks, slaying those who withstood them and treating them like slaves.
Indeed, the other Romans also became worthy of mention in this battle, and the strongest among them were those who shielded Marcius; but above all was Marcius himself, who was undoubtedly the chief cause of the victory.
And since it was already growing dark, the Romans returned to their camp, highly elated by the victory, having both slain many of the Antiates and bringing many captives.
