This was the organization that completed the infantry force, consisting of both the heavy-armed and the light-armed troops.
As for the cavalry, he selected them from those who had the largest rating and were illustrious by birth; he organized them into eighteen centuries and assigned them to the first eighty centuries of heavy-armed troops.
And these also had the most illustrious centurions.
As for the remaining citizens, who had a rating of less than twelve and a half minae, being more numerous than the preceding classes, he organized them all into a single century, and released them from military service and made them exempt from all taxes.
There were indeed six classes, which the Romans call 'classes', having slightly modified the Greek term 'kleiseis'; for the word which we express in the imperative form, 'kalei', they express as 'cala', and in ancient times they called the classes 'kaleseis'.
And the centuries which the classes comprised were one hundred and ninety-three.
Ninety-eight centuries, including the cavalry, occupied the first class; twenty-two, including the artisans, the second; twenty, the third; twenty-two again, including the trumpeters and hornblowers, the fourth; thirty, the fifth; and one century, that of the poor, was ranked after all of them.
