§4.16.1τιμησαμένων δὲ πάντων ἀναλαβὼν τὰ γραμματεῖα καὶ διαγνοὺς τό τε πλῆθος αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ μεγέθη τῶν βίων σοφώτατον ἁπάντων πολιτευμάτων εἰσηγήσατο καὶ μεγίστων Ῥωμαίος ἀγαθῶν αἴτιον, ὡς τὰ ἔργα ἐδήλωσε.
And when all had had their property valued, he received the records, and having ascertained both their number and the sizes of their fortunes, he introduced the wisest of all political constitutions, and one which was the cause of the greatest blessings to the Romans, as the events themselves showed.
§4.16.2τὸ δὲ πολίτευμα τοιόνδε ἦν· μίαν ἀφεῖλεν ἐξ ἁπάντων μοῖραν, ἧς τὸ μέγιστον ἦν τίμημα τῆς οὐσίας οὐκ ἔλαττον ἑκατὸν μνῶν.
The institution was as follows: he set apart one class from the whole body, whose valuation was the highest, being not less than one hundred minae.
τούτους δὲ συντάξας εἰς ὀγδοήκοντα λόχους ὅπλα φέρειν ἐπέταξεν ἀσπίδας Ἀργολικὰς καὶ δόρατα καὶ κράνη χάλκεα καὶ θώρακας καὶ κνημῖδας καὶ ξίφη.
Organizing these into eighty centuries, he ordered them to carry arms: Argolic shields, spears, bronze helmets, breastplates, greaves, and swords.
διελὼν δʼ αὐτοὺς διχῇ, τετταράκοντα μὲν ἐποίησε νεωτέρων λόχους, οἷς τὰς ὑπαιθρίους ἀπέδωκε στρατείας, τετταράκοντα δὲ πρεσβυτέρων, οὓς ἔδει τῆς νεότητος εἰς πόλεμον ἐξιούσης ὑπομένοντας ἐν τῇ πόλει τὰ ἐντὸς τείχους φυλάττειν.
Dividing them into two parts, he made forty centuries of the younger men, to whom he assigned active service in the field, and forty of the older men, who, when the youth went out to war, were to remain in the city and guard the parts within the walls.
§4.16.3αὕτη πρώτη σύνταξις ἦν· χώραν δὲ κατεῖχεν ἐν τοῖς πολέμοις τὴν προαγωνιζομένην τῆς φάλαγγος ὅλης.
This was the first class; and in battle it occupied the position in front of the whole phalanx.
ἔπειτʼ ἐκ τῶν ὑπολειπομένων ἑτέραν ἀφῄρει μοῖραν, οἷς ἦν ἐντὸς μὲν μυρίων δραχμῶν, οὐ μεῖον δὲ πέντε καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα μνῶν τὸ τίμημα.
Next, from the remainder he set apart another class, whose valuation was under ten thousand drachmae, but not less than seventy-five minae.
συντάξας δὲ τούτους εἰς εἴκοσι λόχους τὰ μὲν ἄλλα φορεῖν ὅπλα προσέταξεν, ὅσα τοὺς προτέρους, τοὺς δὲ θώρακας αὐτῶν ἀφεῖλε, καὶ ἀντὶ τῶν ἀσπίδων ἀνέδωκε θυρεούς.
Having organized these into twenty centuries, he ordered them to carry the same other arms as the first class, but he took away their breastplates and gave them oblong shields instead of round ones.
διελὼν δὲ καὶ τούτων τοὺς ὑπὲρ τετταράκοντα καὶ πέντε ἔτη γεγονότας ἀπὸ τῶν ἐχόντων τὴν στρατεύσιμον ἡλικίαν, δέκα μὲν ἐποίησε λόχους νεωτέρων, οὓς ἔδει προπολεμεῖν τῆς πόλεως, δέκα δὲ πρεσβυτέρων, οἷς ἀπέδωκε τειχοφυλακεῖν.
Having divided these also, separating those who were over forty-five years of age from those who were of military age, he made ten centuries of the younger men, who were to fight in front of the city, and ten of the older, to whom he assigned the guarding of the walls.
αὕτη δευτέρα σύνταξις ἦν, ἐκοσμεῖτο δʼ §4.16.4ἐν τοῖς ἀγῶσι μετὰ τοὺς προμάχους.
This was the second class, and it was drawn up in battle behind those who stood in the front rank.
τὴν δὲ τρίτην ἐποίει σύνταξιν ἐκ τῶν ὑπολειπομένων, ὅσοι τίμησιν εἶχον ἐλάττονα μὲν τῶν ἑπτακισχιλίων καὶ πεντακοσίων δραχμῶν, οὐ μείονα δὲ μνῶν πεντήκοντα.
He made the third class from the remainder, who had a valuation of less than seven thousand five hundred drachmae, but not less than fifty minae.
τούτων δʼ ἐμείωσε τὸν ὁπλισμὸν οὐ μόνον τοῖς θώραξιν, §4.16.5ὥσπερ τῶν δευτέρων, ἀλλὰ καὶ ταῖς περικνημῖσι.
He reduced their armor, not only in respect of their breastplates, as had been done in the case of the second class, but also in respect of their greaves.
συνέταξε δὲ καὶ τούτους εἰς εἴκοσι λόχους καὶ διεῖλε τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον τοῖς προτέροις καθʼ ἡλικίας, δέκα λόχους ἀποδοὺς τοῖς νεωτέροις καὶ δέκα τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις.
He organized these also into twenty centuries and divided them in the same manner as the preceding classes according to age, assigning ten centuries to the younger men and ten to the older.
χώρα δὲ καὶ στάσις ἦν τούτων τῶν λόχων ἐν ταῖς μάχαις ἡ μετὰ τοὺς ἐφεστῶτας τοῖς προμάχοις.
And the position and post of these centuries in battle was behind those who were stationed next after the front-rank men.
