§3.53.1ταῖς δʼ ἑξῆς ἡμέραις ἀφικομένης τοῖς Λατίνοις ἑτέρας παρὰ Τυρρηνῶν συμμαχίας δεύτερος ἀγὼν γίνεται πολὺ μείζων τοῦ προτέρου, ἐξ οὗ νίκην ἀναιρεῖται βασιλεὺς Ταρκύνιος ἐπιφανεστάτην, ἧς αὐτὸς αἴτιος ὡμολογεῖτο ὑπὸ πάντων γεγενῆσθαι.
During the following days, when another allied force from the Tyrrhenians arrived for the Latins, a second battle took place, far greater than the former, from which King Tarquinius won a most illustrious victory, of which he himself was acknowledged by everyone to have been the cause.
§3.53.2καμνούσης γὰρ ἤδη τῆς Ῥωμαϊκῆς φάλαγγος καὶ κατὰ τὸ ἀριστερὸν κέρας παραρρηγνυμένης μαθὼν τὸ γινόμενον ἐλάττωμα περὶ τοὺς σφετέρους ʽἔτυχε δὲ τότε μαχόμενος ἐπὶ τοῦ δεξιοῦ κέρατοσʼ τὰς κρατίστας τῶν ἱππέων ἴλας ἐπιστρέψας καὶ τῶν πεζῶν τοὺς ἀκμαιοτάτους ἀναλαβὼν ἦγε κατὰ νώτου τῆς ἑαυτοῦ στρατιᾶς καὶ παραλλάξας τὸ ἀριστερὸν κέρας ἤλαυνεν ἔτι προσωτέρω τῆς φάλαγγος.
For when the Roman phalanx was already exhausted and being broken at the left wing, having learned of the disadvantage occurring among his own men (now he happened at that time to be fighting on the right wing), he turned back the strongest squadrons of cavalry, and taking the most vigorous of the infantry, led them along the rear of his own army, and having passed the left wing, marched even further ahead of the phalanx.
ἔπειτα ἐπιστρέψας ἐπὶ δόρυ καὶ τὰ κέντρα προσβαλὼν τοῖς ἵπποις εἰς πλαγίους ἐμβάλλει τοὺς τῶν Τυρρηνῶν λόχους ʽοὗτοι γὰρ ἐπὶ τοῦ δεξιοῦ τῶν πολεμίων μαχόμενοι κέρατος ἐτρέψαντο τοὺς καθʼ ἑαυτούσʼ, ἐπιφανεὶς δʼ αὐτοῖς ἀπροσδόκητος πολλὴν ἔκπληξιν καὶ ταραχὴν παρέσχεν.
Then, turning to the right, and giving the spurs to his horses, he fell upon the flanks of the Tyrrhenian companies (for these, fighting on the enemy's right wing, had routed those opposed to them), and appearing before them unexpectedly, he caused great consternation and confusion.
§3.53.3ἐν δὲ τούτῳ καὶ ἡ πεζὴ τῶν Ῥωμαίων δύναμις ἀναλαβοῦσα ἑαυτὴν ἐκ τοῦ προτέρου δείματος εἰς ἀντίπαλα ἐχώρει, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο φόνος τε πολὺς τῶν Τυρρηνῶν ἐγίνετο καὶ τροπὴ τοῦ δεξιοῦ κέρατος παντελής.
Meanwhile, the Roman infantry also, recovering themselves from their former fear, advanced to meet the enemy on equal terms; and after this, a great slaughter of the Tyrrhenians took place, and a complete rout of their right wing.
Ταρκύνιος δὲ τοῖς ἡγεμόσι τῶν πεζῶν ἀκολουθεῖν κελεύσας ἐν κόσμῳ καὶ βάδην αὐτὸς ἐπὶ τὸ στρατόπεδον ἐχώρει τὸ τῶν πολεμίων ἐλαύνων τοὺς ἵππους ἀνὰ κράτος, φθάσας δὲ τοὺς ἐκ τῆς τροπῆς ἀνασωζομένους ἐγκρατὴς γίνεται τοῦ χάρακος εὐθὺς ἐξ ἐφόδου.
Tarquinius, having ordered the commanders of the infantry to follow in good order and at a walk, himself advanced toward the enemy's camp, riding his horses at full speed, and getting ahead of those who were escaping from the rout, he became master of the camp immediately at the first onset.
οἱ γὰρ ἐν αὐτῷ καταλειφθέντες οὔτε τὴν κατασχοῦσαν τοὺς σφετέρους συμφορὰν προεγνωκότες οὔτε τοὺς προσιόντας ἱππεῖς γνωρίσαι διὰ τὸ αἰφνίδιον τῆς ἐφόδου δυνηθέντες εἴασαν αὐτοὺς παρελθεῖν.
For those who had been left behind in it, neither having foreknown the disaster that had overtaken their own men, nor being able to recognize the approaching horsemen due to the suddenness of the attack, allowed them to pass in.
§3.53.4ἁλούσης δὲ τῆς παρασκευῆς τῶν Λατίνων οἱ μὲν ἀναχωροῦντες ἐκ τῆς τροπῆς ὡς εἰς ἀσφαλῆ καταφυγὴν ὑπὸ τῶν καταλαβομένων αὐτὴν ἱππέων ἀπώλλυντο, οἱ δʼ ἐκ τοῦ στρατοπέδου φεύγειν ὁρμήσαντες εἰς τὸ πεδίον ὑπὸ τῆς Ῥωμαϊκῆς φάλαγγος ὁμόσε χωρούσης ἀπέθνησκον, οἱ δὲ πλείους αὐτῶν ὠθούμενοί τε ὑπʼ ἀλλήλων καὶ καταπατούμενοι περὶ τοῖς σκόλοψιν ἢ κατὰ τὰς τάφρους τὸν οἴκτιστόν τε καὶ ἀγεννέστατον τρόπον διεφθάρησαν· ὥστʼ ἠναγκάσθησαν οἱ περιλειπόμενοι τῆς σωτηρίας οὐδένα πόρον εὑρεῖν δυνάμενοι παραδοῦναι τοῖς κεκρατηκόσιν ἑαυτούς.
Now when the camp of the Latins was captured, those who were retreating from the rout to it as to a safe refuge were destroyed by the cavalry who had seized it, while those who hastened to flee from the camp into the plain were killed by the Roman phalanx which was coming to close quarters with them; and the greater part of them, being pushed by one another and trampled underfoot, perished around the palisades or in the trenches in the most pitiable and ignoble manner; so that the survivors, being unable to find any means of safety, were forced to surrender themselves to the victors.
§3.53.5γενόμενος δὲ ὁ Ταρκύνιος πολλῶν σωμάτων τε καὶ χρημάτων ἐγκρατὴς τοὺς μὲν αἰχμαλώτους ἀπέδοτο, τὰ δʼ ἐν τῷ χάρακι καταληφθέντα τοῖς στρατιώταις ἐχαρίσατο.
And Tarquinius, having become master of many captives and much property, sold the prisoners of war and gave the things captured in the camp to his soldiers as a reward.
