A second uprising occurred in the city of the Rhegians by the Roman and allied garrison that had been left there, and because of it, massacres of many men and banishments took place.
In order to punish these rebels, Gaius Genucius, one of the two consuls, led out the army; and having made himself master of the city, he restored to the Rhegian exiles their own property to possess, while those who had attacked the city he seized and brought in chains to Rome.
At this, both the senate and the people were so angry and indignant that no lenient opinion was expressed concerning them, but rather, by all the tribes, the death penalty prescribed by the laws for criminals was decreed against all those who were under accusation.
When the decree concerning the punishment was ratified, stakes were fixed in the forum, and being brought forward by batches of three hundred men, they were bound to the stakes naked, with their elbows fastened behind them.
Then, after being scourged with whips in the sight of all, they had their spinal tendons under their heads cut off with the axe.
And after these, another three hundred, and again another such number were put to death, amounting in all to four thousand five hundred.
Nor did they even obtain burial, but being dragged out of the forum into an open place before the city, they were torn to pieces by birds and dogs.
