After this war he marched against the Camerines, who had attacked the colonists among them at the time when the city of the Romans was suffering from a pestilence.
Encouraged especially by this, and thinking that the race of the Romans would be utterly destroyed by this calamity, the Camerines killed some of the colonists and expelled others.
Avenging them for these acts, Romulus, when he had mastered their city for the second time, put to death those responsible for the revolt and permitted his soldiers to plunder the city; then, having cut off half of their territory, besides that which had previously been given to the colonists, and having left a sufficient guard so that those inside should make no further disturbance, he led his army back.
From this campaign he celebrated his second triumph, and out of the spoils he dedicated a bronze quadriga to Hephaestus, and erected his own statue near it, inscribing his deeds in Greek characters.
A third war arose for him against the city which possessed the greatest power among the Tyrrhenian nation at that time, which is called Veii, and is about a hundred stades distant from Rome, situated on a high and craggy cliff, and having a size as large as Athens.
The Veientes made the capture of Fidenae a pretext for the war, and sending envoys, they ordered the Romans to withdraw their garrison from the city and to restore the land which they held after taking it from the Fidenates to its original masters.
Since they could not persuade them, they marched with a large army and pitched their camp in sight near Fidenae.
Romulus, having beforehand learned of their departure, had gone out with his strongest force and was ready in the city of the Fidenates.
When everything was ready for the struggle, both sides advanced into the plain and fought, and they continued fighting with spirit for a long time, until night coming on parted them, they having proved equal in the contest.
Such was the outcome of this battle;
