Romulus and Tatius immediately made the city larger by adding to it two other hills, the one called Quirinal and the Caelian, and, dividing their habitations apart from one another, they each established their quarters in their own districts; Romulus holding the Palatine and the Caelian mount—which is contiguous to the Palatine—and Tatius the Capitoline, which he had occupied from the beginning, and the Quirinal hill.
And clearing the plain that lay under the Capitoline of the wood which grew upon it, and filling up the greater part of the pool—which, because the ground was hollow, was filled with the streams that ran down from the hills—they established a forum there, which the Romans still continue to use even to this day, and there they held their assemblies, transacting public business in the temple of Vulcan, which stood a little above the forum.
They also built temples and consecrated altars to those gods to whom they had made vows during the battles: Romulus to Jupiter Stator near the so-called Mugonian gates, which lead to the Palatine from the Sacred Way, because the god, in answer to his prayers, had caused his fleeing army to stand and turn to resist the enemy; and Tatius to the Sun and Moon, to Saturn and Rhea, and besides these, to Vesta, Vulcan, Diana, Enyalius, and other gods whose names are difficult to express in the Greek tongue; and in all the curiae he placed tables for Juno, called Curitis, which remain even to this day.
For five years, then, they reigned together without differing on any matter; during which time they showed as a common exploit their expedition against the Camerini.
For the Camerini, by sending out plundering bands and doing much damage to their country, refused to submit to justice, though often summoned by them; whom having defeated in a pitched battle (for they came to close quarters with them) and after that taken by storm, they deprived them of their arms and punished them with the loss of a third part of their land, which they divided among their own people.
But when the Camerini harassed the settlers, they marched against them again, and having routed them, they divided all their property among their own citizens, but permitted as many of the inhabitants as wished to dwell in Rome.
These amounted to about four thousand, whom they distributed among the curiae, and made their city a colony of the Romans.
Cameria had been a colony of the Albans, sent out many years before Rome; but in ancient times it was a very famous habitation of the Aborigines.
