§11.47.1ἐπεὶ δʼ αἱ κατὰ πόλιν ἐπαύσαντο ταραχαί, συναγαγόντες τὴν βουλὴν οἱ ὕπατοι δόγμα κυροῦσιν ἐξάγειν τὸν στρατὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς πολεμίους διὰ ταχέων.
When the disturbances in the city ceased, the consuls, having assembled the senate, passed a decree to lead out the army against the enemy with speed.
ἐπικυρώσαντος δὲ τοῦ δήμου τὰ ψηφισθέντα ὑπὸ τῆς βουλῆς Οὐαλέριος μὲν ἅτερος τῶν ὑπάτων τὴν ἡμίσειαν ἔχων τοῦ στρατοῦ μοῖραν ἐξῆγεν ἐπί τʼ Αἰκανοὺς καὶ Οὐολούσκους· συνῆλθε γὰρ ἀμφότερα τὰ ἔθνη.
After the people had ratified the measures voted by the senate, Valerius, one of the consuls, having half the share of the army, led it out against the Aequi and Volsci; for both nations had united.
§11.47.2ἐπιστάμενος δὲ τοὺς Αἰκανοὺς ἐκ τῶν προτέρων κατορθωμάτων αὔχημα προσειληφότας καὶ εἰς πολλὴν καταφρόνησιν τῆς Ῥωμαίων δυνάμεως προελθόντας, ἔτι μᾶλλον ἐβούλετο ἐπᾶραι καὶ θρασυτέρους ποιῆσαι δόξαν οὐκ ἀληθῆ παρασχών, ὡς ὀρρωδῶν εἰς χεῖρας ἰέναι πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ πάντα δεδιότως ἐποίει.
Since he knew that the Aequi, from their former successes, had acquired arrogance and had come to hold a great contempt for the Roman power, he wished to puff them up still more and make them bolder by presenting a false appearance, as if he dreaded to come to blows with them, and he did everything in a fearful manner.
§11.47.3χωρίον τε γὰρ εἰς στρατοπεδείαν ὑψηλὸν καὶ δυσπρόσιτον ἐξελέξατο τάφρον τε βαθεῖαν περιεβάλετο καὶ χάρακας ἤγειρεν ὑψηλούς.
For he chose a high and inaccessible spot for his camp, threw a deep trench around it, and raised high ramparts.
προκαλουμένων δὲ τῶν πολεμίων αὐτὸν εἰς μάχην πολλάκις καὶ κακιζόντων τὴν ἀνανδρίαν ἠνείχετο μένων ἐφʼ ἡσυχίας.
Though the enemy frequently challenged him to battle and reviled his cowardice, he endured it, remaining quiet.
ἐπεὶ δʼ ἔγνω τὴν κρατίστην τῶν πολεμίων δύναμιν ἐπὶ προνομὴν τῆς Ἑρνίκων τε καὶ Λατίνων γῆς ἐξεληλυθυῖαν, ἐν δὲ τῷ χάρακι φυλακὴν οὔτε πολλὴν καταλειπομένην οὔτʼ ἀγαθήν, τοῦτον εἶναι νομίσας τὸν καιρὸν ἐπιτήδειον ἐξῆγε κεκοσμημένην τὴν στρατιὰν καὶ παρέστησεν ὡς εἰς μάχην.
But when he learned that the strongest force of the enemy had gone out to plunder the land of the Hernici and Latins, and that no large or strong guard was left in their camp, thinking this to be the suitable opportunity, he led out his army drawn up in order and posted them as if for battle.
§11.47.4οὐδενός τʼ ἀντεπιόντος ἐκείνην μὲν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐπεῖχε, τῇ δʼ ἑξῆς ἐπὶ τὴν ἀποσκευὴν αὐτῶν ἦγεν οὐ σφόδρα ὀχυρὰν οὖσαν.
And since no one came out against him, he held back for that day, but on the next, he led against their baggage-camp, which was not very secure.
μαθόντες δὲ πολιορκούμενον τὸν χάρακα οἱ προεξεληλυθότες ἐπὶ τὰς προνομὰς ταχέως ἧκον, πλὴν οὐχ ἅμα καὶ ἐν κόσμῳ, σποράδες δὲ καὶ κατʼ ὀλίγους ὡς ἕκαστοι εἶχον ἐπιφαινόμενοι·
When those who had previously gone out to plunder learned that their camp was being besieged, they came back quickly, yet not all together or in order, but appearing scattered and in small groups as each happened to be.
οἵ τʼ ἐκ τοῦ χάρακος ἐπεὶ τοὺς σφετέρους προσιόντας ἐθεάσαντο, θρασύτεροι γεγονότες ἐξῆλθον ἀθρόοι.
And those inside the camp, when they saw their own men approaching, grew bolder and sallied out in a body.
§11.47.5καὶ γίνεται μέγας ἀγὼν καὶ φόνος ἐξ ἀμφοτέρων πολύς, ἐν ᾧ νικήσαντες οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι τούς τε συστάδην μαχομένους ἐτρέψαντο καὶ τοὺς φεύγοντας ἐπιδιώκοντες, οὓς μὲν ἀπέκτειναν, οὓς δʼ αἰχμαλώτους ἔλαβον, τοῦ δὲ χάρακος αὐτῶν κρατήσαντες χρήματα πολλὰ καὶ λείαν ἄφθονον περιεβάλοντο.
And a great battle took place, with much slaughter on both sides, in which the Romans, having gained the victory, routed those fighting hand-to-hand and, pursuing the fugitives, killed some and took others captive, and having made themselves masters of their camp, secured great riches and abundant booty.
Οὐαλέριος μὲν δὴ ταῦτα διαπραξάμενος ἀδεῶς ἤδη τὴν γῆν τῶν πολεμίων ἐπιὼν ἐδῄου.
Valerius, having accomplished these things, now fearlessly invaded and ravaged the land of the enemy.
