§10.17.1τοῦτο τὸ τέλος λαβόντος τοῦ λῃστρικοῦ πολέμου τὴν πολιτικὴν πάλιν ἀνερρίπιζον οἱ δήμαρχοι στάσιν ἀξιοῦντες ἀπολαβεῖν παρὰ τοῦ περιόντος ὑπάτου τὰς ὑποσχέσεις, ἃς ἐποιήσατο πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ τεθνηκὼς ἐν τῇ μάχῃ Οὐαλέριος ὑπὲρ τῆς εἰσφορᾶς τοῦ νόμου.
When this end had been reached by the predatory war, the tribunes of the plebs again fanned the flames of civil strife, demanding to obtain from the surviving consul the promises which Valerius, who had died in the battle, had made to them concerning the introduction of the law.
ὁ δὲ Κλαύδιος μέχρι μέν τινος παρεῖλκε τὸν χρόνον τοτὲ μὲν καθαρμοὺς τῆς πόλεως ἐπιτελῶν, τοτὲ δὲ θυσίας τοῖς θεοῖς χαριστηρίους ἀποδιδούς, τοτὲ δʼ ἀγῶσι καὶ θέαις ἀναλαμβάνων τὸ πλῆθος εἰς εὐπαθείας.
But Claudius for a time dragged out the time, now performing purifications of the city, now offering sacrifices of thanksgiving to the gods, and now diverting the multitude to pleasure with games and spectacles.
§10.17.2ὡς δʼ αἱ σκήψεις αὐτῷ πᾶσαι κατανάλωντο, τελευτῶν ἔφη δεῖν εἰς τὸν τοῦ τεθνηκότος ὑπάτου τόπον ἕτερον ἀποδειχθῆναι.
And when all his pretexts were exhausted, at last he said that another consul must be appointed to the place of the deceased one.
τὰ μὲν γὰρ ὑφʼ ἑαυτοῦ μόνου πραχθέντα οὔτε νόμιμα οὔτε βέβαια ἔσεσθαι, τὰ δʼ ὑπʼ ἀμφοῖν ἔννομά τε καὶ κύρια.
For he claimed that what was done by himself alone would be neither legal nor secure, but what was done by both would be lawful and valid.
ταύτῃ διακρουσάμενος αὐτοὺς τῇ προφάσει προεῖπεν ἀρχαιρεσίων ἡμέραν, ἐν ᾗ τὸν συνάρχοντα ἔμελλεν ἀποδείξειν.
Having warded them off with this pretext, he announced the day for the consular election, on which he was to designate his colleague.
ἐν δὲ τῷ μεταξὺ χρόνῳ διʼ ἀπορρήτων βουλευμάτων οἱ προεστηκότες τοῦ συνεδρίου συνέθεντο κατὰ σφᾶς αὐτούς, ὅτῳ παραδώσουσι τὴν ἀρχήν.
In the intervening time, by secret councils, the leaders of the senate agreed among themselves to whom they would deliver the office.
§10.17.3καὶ ἐπειδὴ ὁ τῶν ἀρχαιρεσίων ἐνέστη χρόνος, καὶ ὁ κῆρυξ τὴν πρώτην τάξιν ἐκάλεσεν, εἰσελθόντες εἰς τὸν ἀποδειχθέντα τόπον οἵ τʼ ὀκτωκαίδεκα λόχοι τῶν ἱππέων καὶ οἱ τῶν πεζῶν ὀγδοήκοντα τῶν τὸ μέγιστον τίμημα ἐχόντων Λεύκιον Κοίντιον Κικιννᾶτον ἀποδεικνύουσιν ὕπατον, οὗ τὸν υἱὸν Καίσωνα Κοίντιον εἰς ἀγῶνα θανάτου καταστήσαντες οἱ δήμαρχοι τὴν πόλιν ἠνάγκασαν ἐκλιπεῖν·
And when the time for the election arrived, and the herald called the first class, the eighteen centuries of cavalry and the eighty centuries of infantry of those having the greatest rating, having entered the designated place, designated Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus as consul—whose son, Caeso Quinctius, the tribunes, having brought to a trial for life, had forced to leave the city.
καὶ οὐδεμιᾶς ἔτι κληθείσης ἐπὶ τὴν ψηφοφορίαν τάξεως — τρισὶ γὰρ ἦσαν λόχοις πλείους οἱ διενέγκαντες τὴν ψῆφον λόχοι τῶν ὑπολειπομένων — ὁ μὲν δῆμος ἀπῄει συμφορὰν βαρεῖαν ἡγούμενος, ὅτι μισῶν αὐτοὺς ἀνὴρ ἐξουσίας ὑπατικῆς ἔσται κύριος, ἡ βουλὴ δὲ ἔπεμπε τοὺς παραληψομένους τὸν ὕπατον καὶ ἄξοντας ἐπὶ τὴν ἀρχήν.
And no other class being called further to the vote—for the centuries that had cast their votes were three centuries more than those remaining—the commons departed, considering it a heavy calamity that a man who hated them should be master of the consular power, while the senate sent messengers to receive the consul and conduct him to his office.
§10.17.4ἔτυχε δὲ τηνικαῦτα ὁ Κοίντιος ἄρουράν τινα ὑπεργαζόμενος εἰς σποράν, αὐτὸς ἀκολουθῶν τοῖς σχίζουσι τὴν νειὸν βοιδίοις ἀχίτων, περιζωμάτιον ἔχων καὶ ἐπὶ τῇ κεφαλῇ πῖλον.
Now Quinctius happened at that time to be ploughing a certain field for sowing, himself following the oxen that were breaking up the fallow ground, without a tunic, having a loincloth and on his head a felt cap.
ἰδὼν δὲ πλῆθος ἀνθρώπων εἰς τὸ χωρίον εἰσιόντων τό τε ἄροτρον ἐπέσχε καὶ πολὺν ἠπόρει χρόνον, οἵτινές τε εἶεν καὶ τίνος δεόμενοι πρὸς αὐτὸν ἥκοιεν· ἔπειτα προσδραμόντος τινὸς καὶ κελεύσαντος κοσμιώτερον ἑαυτὸν ποιῆσαι παρελθὼν εἰς τὴν καλύβη καὶ
Seeing a crowd of men entering the field, he stopped the plough and was for a long time at a loss as to who they were and what they wanted from him; then, someone running up and bidding him to make himself more presentable, he went into the cottage and, having dressed, came forth.
§10.17.5ἀμφιεσάμενος προῆλθεν. οἱ δʼ ἐπὶ τὴν παράληψιν αὐτοῦ παρόντες ἠσπάσαντό τε ἅπαντες οὐκ ἐκ τοῦ ὀνόματος, ἀλλʼ ὕπατον καὶ τὴν περιπόρφυρον ἐσθῆτα περιέθεσαν τούς τε πελέκεις καὶ τἆλλα παράσημα τῆς ἀρχῆς παραστήσαντες ἀκολουθεῖν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἠξίουν.
And those who were present for his reception all greeted him not by name, but as consul, and invested him with the purple-bordered robe, and having placed the axes and the other insignia of office beside him, they requested him to follow them to the city.
κἀκεῖνος μικρὸν ἐπισχὼν καὶ δακρύσας τοσοῦτον εἶπεν· ἄσπορον ἄρα μοι τὸ χωρίον ἔσται τοῦτον τὸν ἐνιαυτόν, καὶ κινδυνεύσομεν οὐχ ἕξειν, πόθεν διατραφῶμεν. ἔπειτʼ ἀσπασάμενος τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ τῶν ἔνδον ἐπιμελεῖσθαι παραγγείλας ᾤχετο εἰς τὴν πόλιν.
And he, having paused for a moment and shed tears, said only this: "My field then will be unsown this year, and we shall run the risk of having nothing to feed upon." Then, having embraced his wife and charged her to take care of affairs within, he departed for the city.
§10.17.6ταῦτα δὲ οὐχ ἑτέρου τινὸς χάριν εἰπεῖν προήχθην, ἀλλʼ ἵνα φανερὸν γένηται πᾶσιν, οἷοι τότε ἦσαν οἱ τῆς Ῥωμαίων πόλεως προεστηκότες, ὡς αὐτουργοὶ καὶ σώφρονες καὶ πενίαν δικαίαν οὐ βαρυνόμενοι καὶ βασιλικὰς οὐ διώκοντες ἐξουσίας, ἀλλὰ καὶ διδομένας ἀναινόμενοι·
I have been led to relate these things for no other reason than that it might become manifest to all what kind of men they were who then stood at the head of the Roman state, how they worked with their own hands, were temperate, did not repine at a righteous poverty, and did not pursue kingly powers, but even rejected them when offered.
φανήσονται γὰρ οὐδὲ κατὰ μικρὸν ἐοικότες ἐκείνοις οἱ νῦν, ἀλλὰ τἀναντία πάντα ἐπιτηδεύοντες, πλὴν πάνυ ὀλίγων, διʼ οὓς ἕστηκεν ἔτι τὸ τῆς πόλεως ἀξίωμα καὶ τὸ σώζειν τὴν πρὸς ἐκείνους τοὺς ἄνδρας ὁμοιότητα.
For the men of today will be seen to resemble them not even in a small degree, but to practice all the opposites, except for a very few, through whom the dignity of the city still stands and the preservation of similarity to those men is maintained.
ἀλλὰ περὶ μὲν τούτων ἅλις.
