§1.83.1Φαιστύλος δὲ τῆς ἀλόγου πραότητος ὑποψίᾳ κινηθεὶς μὴ φρονεῖν αὐτὸν ὅμοια τοῖς λόγοις ἀποκρίνεται ὧδε· οἱ μὲν παῖδές εἰσιν ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσι βουκολοῦντες, ὅσπερ ἐκείνων βίος, ἐγὼ δʼ ἐπέμφθην παρʼ αὐτῶν τῇ μητρὶ δηλώσων ἐν αἷς εἰσι τύχαις·
Faustulus, moved by suspicion of his unreasonable gentleness that he did not think things similar to his words, answered thus: "The children are in the mountains tending herds, which is their way of life; and I was sent by them to declare to their mother in what fortunes they are.
ταύτην δὲ παρά σοι φυλάττεσθαι ἀκούων δεήσεσθαι τῆς σῆς θυγατρὸς ἔμελλον, ἵνα με πρὸς αὐτὴν ἀγάγοι.

τὴν δὲ σκάφην ἔφερον, ἵνʼ ἔχω δεικνύναι τεκμήριον ἐμφανὲς ἅμα τοῖς λόγοις.

νῦν οὖν ἐπεὶ δέδοκταί σοι τοὺς νεανίσκους δεῦρο κομίσαι χαίρω τε, καὶ πέμψον οὕς2τινας βούλει σὺν ἐμοί.

δείξω μὲν οὖν τοῖς ἐλθοῦσι τοὺς παῖδας, φράσουσι δʼ αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι τὰ παρά σου. §1.83.2ὁ μὲν δὴ ταῦτʼ ἔλεγεν ἀναβολὴν εὑρέσθαι βουλόμενος τοῖς παισὶ τοῦ θανάτου καὶ ἅμα αὐτὸς ἀποδράσεσθαι τοὺς ἄγοντας, ἐπειδὰν ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσι γένηται, ἐλπίσας.
Indeed, I will show the children to those who come, and they will declare to them the messages from you." He, indeed, said these things wishing to find a delay of death for the children, and at the same time hoping that he himself would escape those who led him when he should get into the mountains.
Ἀμόλιος δὲ τοῖς πιστοτάτοις τῶν ὁπλοφόρων ἐπιστείλας κρύφα, οὓς ἂν ὁ συοφορβὸς αὐτοῖς δείξῃ συλλαβόντας ὡς αὐτὸν ἄγειν, ἀποστέλλει διαταχέων.
Amulius, having secretly charged the most faithful of his armed guards to arrest whomever the swineherd should show them and bring them to him, dispatched them with speed.
ταῦτα δὲ διαπραξάμενος αὐτίκα γνώμην ἐποιεῖτο καλέσας τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἐν φυλακῇ ἀδέσμῳ ἔχειν, ἕως ἂν εὖ θῆται τὰ παρόντα, καὶ αὐτὸν ὡς ἐπʼ §1.83.3ἄλλο δή τι ἐκάλει.
Having accomplished these things, he immediately made up his mind, after calling his brother, to keep him under custody without bonds until he should settle the present affairs well, and he called him as if for some other matter indeed.

But the messenger who was sent, giving way to goodwill toward the one in danger and to pity for his fortune, became an informant to Numitor of Amulius' purpose.
ὁ δὲ τοῖς παισὶ δηλώσας τὸν κατειληφότα κίνδυνον αὐτοὺς καὶ παρακελευσάμενος ἄνδρας ἀγαθοὺς γενέσθαι παρῆν ἄγων ὡπλισμένους ἐπὶ τὰ βασίλεια τῶν τε ἄλλων πελατῶν καὶ ἑταίρων καὶ θεραπείας πιστῆς χεῖρα οὐκ ὀλίγην.
He, having shown to the children the danger that had overtaken them and exhorted them to be brave men, was present leading armed men to the palace, not a small hand of both the other clients and companions and of faithful servants.
ἧκον δὲ καὶ οἱ ἐκ τῶν ἀγρῶν συνελθόντες εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐκλιπόντες τὴν ἀγορὰν ἔχοντες ὑπὸ ταῖς περιβολαῖς ξίφη κεκρυμμένα, στῖφος καρτερόν.
And those from the fields, having assembled into the city, leaving their marketplace, also came having swords hidden under their cloaks, a strong body.
βιασάμενοι δὲ τὴν εἴσοδον ἀθρόᾳ ὁρμῇ πάντες οὐ πολλοῖς ὁπλίταις φρουρουμένην ἀποσφάττουσιν εὐπετῶς Ἀμόλιον καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο τὴν ἄκραν καταλαμβάνονται.
And having forced the entrance by a sudden rush, which was guarded by not many heavy-armed soldiers, they all easily slaughtered Amulius, and after this seized the citadel.
ταῦτα μὲν οὖν τοῖς περὶ Φάβιον εἴρηται.
These things, then, have been told by Fabius and his followers.
