Let the formation be as follows.
Let each of the two wings of the infantry occupy the high ground, since the deployment will take place in such terrain.
On the right wing, let the Armenians under Vasaces and Arbelus be stationed, occupying the highest part of the wing, since they are all archers.
Before them, let the infantry of the Italian cohort be stationed.
Let Pulcher, who also commands the Italian cohort, lead them all.
And to him let Vasaces himself and Arbelus, along with their cavalry and infantry, be entrusted.
On the left wing, let the allies from Lesser Armenia, the light-armed troops of Trapezus, and the Rizian spear-bearers be stationed, these too occupying the highest part of the wing.
Before them, let two hundred of the Aplani and one hundred of the Cyrenaeans be stationed, so that the heavy infantry may form a barrier before the javelin-throwers, and the latter may throw their javelins from the high ground over their heads.
Of the whole center, let the fifteenth infantry phalanx occupy the right side, extending beyond the middle of the entire ground, since they are far greater in number; let the infantry of the twelfth phalanx fill the remainder of the left side, as far as the extremity of the left wing.
Let them be drawn up eight deep, and let their files be close-locked.
Let the first four ranks be of pike-bearers, whose pikes are tipped with long, slender iron points.
Of these, let the front-rank men hold them at the ready, so that if the enemy approach them, they may plant the iron points of their pikes especially against the chests of the horses; while those of the second, third, and fourth ranks should hold their pikes advanced to strike wherever they can, to wound the horses, and to kill the rider, or, if the pike gets stuck in a shield or breastplate and bends due to the softness of the iron, to render the rider useless.
Let the ranks next in order be of spear-bearers.
Behind these, let the ninth rank be the infantry archers, those of the Nomads, Cyrenaeans, Bosporans, and Ituraeans.
Let artillery pieces be stationed at each wing, to shoot from as far as possible as the enemy approach, and let these be behind the entire phalanx.
Let the entire cavalry, drawn up in squadrons and eight cohorts, stand behind the infantry: on the two wings, two cohorts having the heavy infantry and archers as a barrier before them; and six cohorts at the center phalanx.
Of these, let those who are horse-archers stand near the phalanx so as to shoot over it; let those who are spear-bearers, pike-bearers, sword-bearers, or axe-bearers watch the flanks on both sides and await the signal.
Let the elite cavalry be around Xenophon himself, and about two hundred of the infantry from the phalanx, as bodyguards, and as many centurions as are marshaled with the elite, and the leaders of the bodyguards, and the decurions of the elite.
