§11.1Τραπεζουντίοις μέν, καθάπερ καὶ Ξενοφῶν λέγει, Κόλχοι ὅμοροι.
To the Trapezuntines, as Xenophon also says, the Colchians are adjacent.
καὶ οὓς λέγει τοὺς μαχιμωτάτους καὶ ἐχθροτάτους εἶναι τοῖς Τραπεζουντίοις, ἐκεῖνος μὲν Δρίλας ὀνομάζει, ἐμοὶ δὲ δοκοῦσιν οἱ Σάννοι οὗτοι εἶναι.
And those whomhe says are the most warlike and hostile to the Trapezuntines, he names Drilae, but to me they seem to be these Sanni.
καὶ γὰρ μαχιμώτατοί εἰσιν ἐς τοῦτο ἔτι καὶ τοῖς Τραπεζουντίοις ἐχθρότατοι, καὶ χωρία ὀχυρὰ οἰκοῦσιν, ἔθνος ἀβασίλευτον καὶ πάλαι §11.2μὲν καὶ φόρου ὑποτελὲς Ῥωμαίοις, ὑπὸ δὲ τοῦ λῃστεύειν οὐκ ἀκριβοῦσιν τὴν ἀποφοράν.
For they are indeed most warlike to this day and most hostile to the Trapezuntines, and they inhabit fortified places, being a kingless tribe, and of old paying tribute to the Romans, but because of their plundering they do not render their payment accurately.
ἀλλὰ νῦν γε διδόντος θεοῦ ἀκριβώσουσιν, ἢ ἐξελοῦμεν αὐτούς.
But now, at least, if God grants it, they will render it accurately, or we shall expel them.
τούτων δὲ ἔχονται Μάκρωνες καὶ Ἡνίοχοι· βασιλεὺς δʼ αὐτῶν Ἀγχίαλος.
Adjacent to these are the Macrones and the Heniochi; their king is Anchialus.
Μακρώνων δὲ καὶ Ἡνιόχων ἐχόμενοι Ζυδρεῖται· Φαρασμάνου οὗτοι ὑπήκοοι.
Adjacent to the Macrones and the Heniochi are the Zydreitae; these are subjects of Pharasmanes.
Ζυδρειτῶν δὲ Λαζοί· βασιλεὺς δὲ Λαζῶν Μαλάσσας, ὃς τὴν βασιλείαν παρὰ σοῦ ἔχει.
Adjacent to the Zydreitae are the Lazi; the king of the Lazi is Malassas, who holds his kingshipfrom you.
Λαζῶν δὲ Ἀψίλαι ἔχονται· βασιλεὺς §11.3δὲ αὐτῶν Ἰουλιανός· οὗτος, ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς τοῦ σοῦ τὴν βασιλείαν ἔχει.
Adjacent to the Lazi are the Apsilae; their king is Julianus; he holds his kingship from your father.
Ἀψίλαις δὲ ὅμοροι Ἀβασκοί· καὶ Ἀβασκῶν βασιλεὺς Ῥησμάγας· καὶ οὗτος παρὰ σοῦ τὴν βασιλείαν ἔχει.
Adjacent to the Apsilae are the Abasci; and the king of the Abasci is Rhesmagas; he too holds his kingship from you.
Ἀβασκῶν δὲ ἐχόμενοι Σανίγαι, ἵναπερ καὶ ἡ Σεβαστόπολις ᾤκισται· Σανιγῶν βασιλεὺς Σπαδάγας ἐκ σοῦ τὴν βασιλείαν ἔχει. — μέχρι μὲν δὴ §11.4Άψάρου ὡς πρὸς ἕω ἐπλέομεν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ Εὐξείνου, ὁ δὲ Ἄψαρος πέρας ἐφάνη μοι εἶναι κατὰ μῆκος τοῦ Πόντου· ἔνθεν γὰρ ἤδη πρὸς ἄρκτον ὁ πλοῦς ἡμῖν ἐγίγνετο ἔστε ἐπὶ Χῶβον ποταμόν, καὶ ὑπὲρ τὸν Χῶβον ἐπὶ τὸν Σιγγάμην.
Adjacent to the Abasci are the Sanigae, where Sebastopolis is also founded; the king of the Sanigae, Spadagas, holds his kingship from you. — Indeed, as far as Apsarus we were sailing towards the east with the Euxine on our right,and Apsarus appeared to me to be the limit along the length of the Pontus; for from there our voyage was already directed towards the north as far as the river Chobos, and beyond the Chobos to the Singames.
ἀπὸ δὲ Σιγγάμου ἐκάμπτομεν ἐς τὴν λαιὰν πλευρὰν τοῦ Πόντου ἔστε ἐπὶ τὸν Ἵππον ποταμόν.
From the Singames we were bending into the leftside of the Pontus as far as the river Hippos.
§11.5ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ Ἵππου ὡς ἐπʼ Ἀστέλεφον καὶ Διοσκουριάδα κατείδομεν τὸν Καύκασον τὸ ὄρος, τὸ ὕψος μάλιστα κατὰ τὰς Ἄλπεις τὰς Κελτικάς.
From the Hippos, as we sailed towards Astelephos and Dioscurias, we came in sight of Mount Caucasus, whose height is mostly equal to the Celtic Alps.
καὶ τοῦ Καυκάσου κορυφή τις ἐδείκνυτο — στρόβιλος τῇ κορυφῇ ὄνομα —, ἵναπερ ὁ Προμηθεὺς κρεμασθῆναι ὑπὸ Ἡφαίστου κατὰ πρόσταξιν Διὸς μυθεύεται.
And a certain peak of the Caucasus was pointed out—Strobilus being the name of the peak—where Prometheus is mythologized to have been suspended by Hephaestus by order of Zeus.
