§1Ἔδοξε Καρχηδονίοις Ἅννωνα πλεῖν ἔξω Στηλῶν Ἡροκλείων καὶ πόλεις κτίζειν Λιβυφοινίκων.
It pleased the Carthaginians that Hanno should sail outside the Pillars of Heracles and found cities of the Libyphoenicians.
Καὶ ἔπλευσε πεντηκοντόρους ἑξήκοντα ἄγων, καὶ πλλῆθος ἀνδρῶν καὶ γυναικῶν εἰς ἀριθμὸν μυριάδων τριῶν καὶ σἶτα καὶ τὴν ἄλλην παρασκευήν.
And he sailed, leading sixty fifty-oared ships, and a multitude of men and women to the number of thirty thousand, and provisions and other equipment.

Ὡς δʼ ἀναχθέντες τὰς Στήλας παρημείψαμεν καὶ ἔξω πλοῦν δυοῖν ἡμερῶν ἐπλεύσαμεν, ἐκτίσαμεν πρώτην πόλιν, ἥντινα ὠνομάσαμεν Θυμιατήριον· πεδίον δʼ αὐτῇ μέγα ὑπῆν.
When, having set sail, we passed the Pillars and sailed outside for a two days' voyage, we founded the first city, which we named Thymiaterion; and a large plain lay below it.

Κἄπειτα πρὸς ἑσπέραν ἀναχθέντες ἐπὶ Σολόεντα, Λιβυκὸν ἀκρωτήριον λάσιον δένδρεσι, συνήλθομεν.
And then, having set sail toward the west, we came to Soloeis, a Libyan promontory thick with trees.

Ἔνθα Ποσειδῶνος ἱερὸν ἱδρυσάμενοι πάλιν ἐπέβῃμεν πρὸς ἥλιον ἀνίσχοντα ἡμέρας ἥμισυ, ἄχρι ἐκομίσθημεν εἰς λίμνην οὐ πόρρω τῆς θαλάττης κειμένην, καλάμου μεστήν πολλοῦ καὶ μεγάλου· ἐνῆσαν δὲ καὶ ἐλέφαντες καὶ τἆλλα θηρία νεμόμενα πάμπολλα.
There, having established a temple of Poseidon, we boarded again and sailed toward the rising sun for half a day, until we were carried into a lake lying not far from the sea, full of many large reeds; and there were elephants and many other wild beasts feeding there.

Τήν τε λίμνην παραλλάξαντες ὅσον ἡμέρας πλοῦν, κατῳκίσαμμεν πόλεις πρὸς τῇ θαλάττῃ καλουμένας Καρικόν τε τεῖχος καὶ Γύττην καὶ Ἄκραν καὶ Μέλιτταν καὶ Ἄραμβυν.
And having passed the lake for about a day's sail, we settled cities near the sea called Karikon Teichos, and Gytte, and Akra, and Melitta, and Arambys.

Κἀκεῖθεν δʼ ἀναχθέντες ἤλθομεν ἐπὶ μέγαν ποταμὸν Λίξον, ἀπὸ τῆς Λιβύης ῥέοντα.
And having set sail from there, we came to the Lixos, a great river flowing from Libya.
Παρὰ δʼ αὐτὸν νομάδες ἄνθρωποι Λιξῖται βοσκήματʼ ἔνεμον, παρʼ οἷς ἐμείναμεν ἄχρι τινὸς, φίλοι γενόμενοι.
Beside it, nomadic men called Lixitae were feeding their flocks, with whom we remained for some time, having become friends.

Τούτων δὲ καθύπερθεν Αἰθίοπες ᾤκουν ἄξενοι, γῆν νεμόμενοι θηριώδη, διειλημμένην ὄρεσι μεγάλοις, ἐξ ὧν ῥεῖν φασι τὸν Λίξον, περὶ δὲ τὰ ὄρη κατοικεῖν ἀνθρώπους ἀλλοιομόρφους, Τρωγλοδύτας· οὓς ταχυτέρους ἵππων ἐν δρόμοις ἔφραζον οἱ Λιξῖται.
And above these, inhospitable Ethiopians dwelt, inhabiting a land full of wild beasts, divided by great mountains, from which they say the Lixos flows; and they said that around the mountains dwelt men of different shapes, the Troglodytes, whom the Lixitae declared to be swifter than horses in running.

Λαβόντες δὲ παρʼ αὐτῶν ἑρμηνέας, παρεπλέομεν τὴν ἐρήμην πρὸς μεσημβρίαν δύο ἡμέρας· ἐκεῖθεν δὲ πάλιν πρὸς ἥλιον ἀνίσχοντα ἡμέρας δρόμον.
Having taken interpreters from them, we sailed past the desert toward the south for two days; and from there again toward the rising sun for a day's run.
Ἔνθα εὕρομεν ἐν μυχῷ τινος κόλπου νῆσον μικρὰν, κύκλον ἔχουσαν σταδίων πέντε· ἥν κατῳκίσαμεν, Κέρνην ὀνομάσαντες.
There we found in the recess of a certain gulf a small island, having a circumference of five stades, which we settled, naming it Cerne.
Ἐτεκμαιρόμεθα δʼ αὐτὴν ἐκ τοῦ περίπλου κατʼ εὐθὺ κεῖσθαι Καρχηδόνος· ἐῴκει γὰρ ὁ πλοῦς ἔκ τε Καρχηδόνος ἐπὶ Στήλας κἀκεῖθεν ἐπὶ Κέρνην.
We estimated from our voyage that it lay directly opposite Carthage; for the voyage from Carthage to the Pillars was like that from the Pillars to Cerne.

Τοὐντεῦθεν εἰς λίμνην ἀφικόμεθα, διά τινος ποταμοῦ μεγάλου διαπλεύσαντες, ᾧ ὄνομα [] supplevit Χρετης· εἶχε δὲ νήσους ἡ λίμνη τρεῖς μείζους τῆς Κέρνης.
From there we came to a lake, sailing through a certain great river whose name was Chretes; and the lake had three islands larger than Cerne.
Ἀφʼ ὧν ἡμερήσιον πλοῦν κατανύσαντες, εἰς τὸν μυχὸν τῆς λίμνης ἤλθομεν, ὑπὲρ ἣν ὄρη μέγιστα ὑπερέτεινε, μεστὰ ἀνθρώπων ἀγρίων, δέρματα θήρεια ἐνημμένων, οἳ πέτροις βάλλοντες ἀπήραξαν ἡμᾶς, κωλύοντες ἐκβῆναι.
Completing a day's sail from these, we came to the recess of the lake, over which hung very high mountains, full of wild men clad in animal skins, who, throwing stones at us, drove us away, preventing us from landing.

Ἐκεῖθεν πλέοντες εἰς ἕτερον ἤλθομεν ποταμὸν μέγαν καὶ πλατὺν, γέμοντα κροκοδείλων καὶ ἵππων ποταμίων.
Sailing from there, we came to another great and wide river, full of crocodiles and hippopotamuses.
Ὅθεν δὴ πάλιν ἀποστρέψαντες εἰς Κέρνην ἐπανήλθομεν.
From where, indeed, turning back again, we returned to Cerne.

Ἐκεῖθεν δὲ ἐπὶ μεσημβρίαν ἐπλεύσαμεν δώδεκα ἡμέρας, τὴν γῆν παραλεγόμενοι, ἣν πᾶσαν κατῴκουν Αἰθίοπες φεύγοντες ἡμᾶς καὶ οὐχ ὑπομένοντες· ἀσύνετα δʼ ἐφθέγγοντο καὶ τοῖς μεθʼ ἡμῶν Λιξίταις.
And from there we sailed toward the south for twelve days, coasting along the land, all of which was inhabited by Ethiopians who fled from us and did not await us; and they spoke unintelligibly even to the Lixitae who were with us.

Τῇ δʼ οὖν τελευταίᾳ ἡμέρᾳ προσωρμίσθημεν ὄρεσι μεγάλοις δασέσιν.
On the last day, however, we came to anchor near great, densely wooded mountains.
Ἦν δὲ τὰ τῶν δένδρων ξύλα εὐώδη τε καὶ ποικίλα.
And the wood of the trees was fragrant and variegated.

Περιπλεύσαντες δὲ ταῦτα ἡμέρας δύο ἐγινόμεθα ἐν θαλάττης χάσματι ἀμετρήτῳ, ἦς ἐπὶ θάτερα πρὸς τῇ γῇ πεδίον ἦν· ὅθεν νυκτὸς ἀφεωρῶμεν πῦρ ἀναφερόμενον πανταχόθεν κατʼ ἀποστάσεις, τὸ μὲν πλέον, τὸ δʼ ἔλαττον.
Having sailed around these for two days, we came to an immense gulf of the sea, on the other side of which, near the land, was a plain; from where at night we saw fire rising from all sides at intervals, some more, some less.

Ὑδρευσάμενοι δ’ ἐκεῖθεν ἐπλέομεν εἰς τοὔμπροσθεν ἡμέρας πέντε παρὰ γῆν, ἄχρι ἤλθομεν εἰς μέγαν κόλπον, ὃν ἔφασαν οἱ ἑρμηνέες καλεῖσθαι Ἑσπέρου Κέρας.
Having taken water from there, we sailed forward for five days along the land, until we came to a great gulf, which the interpreters said was called Hesperou Keras.
Ἐν δὲ τούτῳ νῆσος ἦν μεγάλη καὶ ἐν τῆ νήσῳ λίμνη θαλασσώδης, ἐν δὲ ταύτῃ νῆσος ἑτέρα, εἰς ἣν ἀποβάντες ἡμέρας μὲν οὐδὲν ἀφεωρῶμεν ὅτι μὴ ὕλην, νυκτὸς δὲ πυρά τε πολλὰ καιόμενα, καὶ φωνὴν αὐλῶν ἠκούομεν κυμβάλων τε καὶ τυμπάνων πάταγον καὶ κραυγὴν μυρίαν.
And in this was a large island, and in the island a saltwater lake, and in this another island, on landing upon which by day we saw nothing but forest, but by night many burning fires, and we heard the sound of flutes, the clashing of cymbals and drums, and a countless shouting.
Φόβος οὖν ἔλαβεν ἡμᾶς, καὶ οἱ μάντεις ἐκέλευον ἐκλείπειν τὴν νῆσον.
Fear, therefore, seized us, and the prophets ordered us to leave the island.

Ταχὺ δʼ ἐκπλεύσαντες παρημειβόμεθα χώραν διάπυρον θυμιαμάτων μεστήν· μέγιστοι supplevit [] δʼ ἀπʼ αὐτῆς πυρώδεις ῥύακες ἐνέβαλλον εἰς τὴν θάλατταν.
Having sailed away quickly, we passed by a fiery country full of incense; and very great streams of fire from it flowed into the sea.
Ἡ γῆ δ’ ὑπὸ θέρμης ἄβατος ἦν.
And the land was inaccessible because of the heat.

Ταχὺ οὖν κἀκεῖθεν φοβηθέντες ἀπεπλεύσαμεν.
Quickly, therefore, being terrified, we sailed away from there also.
Τέτταρας δʼ ἡμέρας φερόμενοι, νυκτὸς τὴν γῆν ἀφεωρῶμεν φλογὸς μεστήν· ἐν μέσῳ δʼ ἦν ἠλίβατόν τι πῦρ, τῶν ἄλλων μεῖζον, ἁπτόμενον, ὡς ἐδόκει, τῶν ἄστρων.
And being carried for four days, we saw the land at night full of flame; and in the midst was a certain towering fire, larger than the others, touching, as it seemed, the stars.
Τοῦτο δʼ ἡμέρας ὄρος ἐφαίνετο μέγιστον, Θεῶν ὄχημα καλούμενον.
By day, however, this appeared as a very great mountain, called Theon Ochema.

Τριταῖοι δʼ ἐκεῖθεν πυρώδεις ῥύακας παραπλεύσαντες ἀφικόμεθα εἰς κόλπον Νότου Κέρας λεγόμενον.
And having sailed past the streams of fire for three days from there, we arrived at a gulf called Notou Keras.

Ἐν δὲ τῷ μυχῷ νῆσος ἦν, ἐοικυῖα τῇ πρώτῃ, λίμνην ἔχουσα· καὶ ἐν ταύτῃ νῆσος ἦν ἑτέρα, μεστὴ ἀνθρώπων ἀγρίων.
And in its recess was an island, resembling the first, having a lake; and in this was another island, full of wild men.
Πολὺ δὲ πλείους ἦσαν γυναῖκες, δασεῖαι τοῖς σώμασιν· ἃς οἱ ἑρμηνέες ἐκάλουν Γορίλλας.
By far the majority were women, with shaggy bodies; whom the interpreters called Gorillas.
Διώκοντες δὲ ἄνδρας μὲν συλλαβεῖν οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν, ἀλλὰ πάντες delevit = () ἐξέφυγον, κρημνοβάται ὄντες καὶ τοῖς πέτροις ἀμυνόμενοι, γυναῖκας δὲ τρεῖς, αἳ δάκνουσαί τε καὶ σπαράττουσαι τοὺς ἄγοντας οὐκ ἤθελον ἕπεσθαι.
Pursuing them, we were not able to catch the men, but all escaped, being cliff-climbers and defending themselves with stones; but we caught three women, who bit and tore those who led them, and did not wish to follow.
Ἀποκτείναντες μέντοι αὐτὰς ἐξεδείραμεν καὶ τὰς δορὰς ἐκομίσαμεν εἰς Καρχηδόνα.
Having killed them, however, we flayed them and brought their skins to Carthage.
Οὐ γὰρ ἔτι ἐπλεύσαμεν προσωτέρω, τῶν σίτων ἡμᾶς ἐπιλιπόντων.
For we did not sail any further, our provisions failing us.
