Ἆρά γε ὁ γνῶναι τὸν σολοικίζοντα δεινὸς οὗτος καὶ φυλάξασθαι μὴ σολοικίσαι δυνατός;
Lykinos Is indeed he who is clever at recognizing one who commits a solecism also capable of guarding against committing a solecism himself?
Soloikistes So it seems to me.
Ὁ δέ γε μὴ φυλάξασθαι οὐδὲ γνῶναι τὸν οὕτως ἔχοντα;
Lykinos And he who is not capable of guarding against it is not capable of recognizing one who is in such a state either?
Soloikistes You speak the truth.
Σὺ δὲ αὐτὸς φὴς οὐ σολοικίζειν, ἢ πῶς λέγωμεν περὶ σοῦ;
Lykinos And do you yourself claim not to commit solecisms, or how should we speak of you?
Soloikistes For I should be uneducated if I committed solecisms at my age.
Οὐκοῦν καὶ ἕτερον φωρᾶσαι δυνήσῃ τοῦτο δρῶντα καὶ ἐλέγξαι τὸν ἀρνούμενον;
Lykinos Therefore you will also be able to detect another doing this and to refute him if he denies it?
Soloikistes Quite so.
Lykinos Come then, catch me committing a solecism, for I shall commit a solecism right now.
Soloikistes Speak then.
Lykinos But I have already done the terrible deed, and you did not recognize it.
Παίζεις ἔχων;
Soloikistes Are you playing tricks on me?
Lykinos By the gods, no!
Since I committed a solecism and escaped your notice because of your lack of knowledge.
Look again; for I say you are unable to understand, since there are some things you know, and others you do not know.
Soloikistes Just speak.
Lykinos But even now a solecism has been committed by me, and you did not recognize it.
Πῶς γάρ, σοῦ μηδὲν λέγοντος;
Soloikistes For how could that be, when you have said nothing?
Lykinos I am speaking and committing a solecism, but you do not follow me in doing this; indeed, I wish you would be able to follow even now.
Soloikistes You say strange things, if I shall not be able to understand a solecism.
Καὶ πῶς ἂν δύναιο τὸν ἕνα μαθεῖν τοὺς τρεῖς ἀγνοήσας;
Lykinos And how could you understand the one, when you missed the three?
Τίνας τρεῖς;
Soloikistes Which three?
Lykinos All of them freshly born.
Soloikistes I think you are joking.
Lykinos And I think you fail to notice the one who makes mistakes in speech.
Καὶ πῶς ἄν τις μάθοι μηδενὸς εἰρημένου;
Soloikistes And how could anyone notice when nothing has been said?
Lykinos It has been spoken and a solecism has been committed fourfold, but you did not recognize it.
Indeed, you would have achieved a great prize, if only you had recognized it.
Soloikistes Not great indeed, but necessary for one who has agreed to it.
Lykinos But even now you did not recognize it.
Πότε νῦν;
Soloikistes When now?
Lykinos When I said that you had achieved the prize.
Soloikistes I do not know what you mean.
Lykinos You spoke correctly, for you do not know.
Go on further ahead; for you do not wish to follow, though you would understand, if only you wished.
Soloikistes But I do wish to; yet you have said nothing of the sort that people who commit solecisms say.
Τὸ γὰρ νῦν ῥηθὲν μικρόν τί σοι φαίνεται κακὸν εἶναι;
Lykinos Does what was just said seem to you to be a small error?
Nevertheless, follow again, since you did not notice it as it ran out.
Soloikistes By the gods, not I indeed.
Lykinos But indeed, I let a swift hare run.
ἆρα παρῇξεν;
Did it pass by?
Yet even now it is possible to see the hare; otherwise, many hares will escape your notice, falling into solecism.
Soloikistes They will not escape notice.
Lykinos And yet they did.
Soloikistes You say strange things.
Lykinos But you are ruined by excessive education, so that you cannot even understand this very thing, those who commit solecisms; for the word "whom" is not attached to it.
Soloikistes I do not know what you mean by this; but I have already understood many who commit solecisms.
Lykinos And so you will know me too when you become like one of the infants who suck their nurses.
Or if you did not recognize me committing a solecism just now, neither will growing children commit a solecism for one who knows nothing.
Soloikistes You speak the truth.
Lykinos And yet, if we are ignorant of these things, we shall know nothing of our own, since this solecism too has escaped you.
Do not, therefore, say any longer that you are capable of detecting one who commits a solecism, and that you do not commit solecisms yourself.
