Grammarian's Failure to Spot Solecisms

Notes

1. p.403ἄρτι δὲ σολοικιῶ — The adverb ἄρτι normally refers to the past or present ('just now'), but here it is used with the future tense σολοικιῶ ('I shall commit a solecism'). This combination constitutes the first intentional solecism.
2. v.2.p.554ὡς οὐκ ἐπιστάμενού — The genitive form ἐπιστάμενού (from ἐπιστάμενος) is used where the accusative (ἐπιστάμενον, agreeing with σε: 'without your knowing') is grammatically required. This grammatical mismatch constitutes the second solecism.
3. v.2.p.554ἐπει ὄφελον καὶ νῦν ἀκολουθῆσαι δυνήσῃ — The particle ὄφελον, which with an infinitive expresses an unattainable wish in the past, is incongruously followed by the future indicative δυνήσῃ ('you will be able'). This inconsistency in tense and construction constitutes the third solecism.
4. v.2.p.555ἐγὼ μέν σε παίζειν δοκῶ — To express 'I think you are joking,' one should use either the impersonal δοκεῖ μοι σε παίζειν or the personal δοκεῖς μοι παίζειν. Here, the subject of the main clause is erroneously made ἐγώ ('I seem'), resulting in a syntactical confusion that forms the fourth solecism.
5. p.404συνήσων ἄν — The particle ἄν is historically and grammatically incompatible with the future participle (συνήσων) in classical Attic Greek; its combination here represents a distinct solecism.
6. v.2.p.558διέφθορας — The second perfect διέφθορα is intransitive in classical Greek, meaning 'I am ruined/destroyed.' Here, it is improperly used in a transitive sense ('you have ruined') instead of the active transitive perfect διέφθαρκας, constituting a solecism.
7. v.2.p.559ἢ εἰ οὐ νῦν ἔγνως — In a conditional clause introduced by εἰ, the negative particle should normally be μή. The use of οὐ here instead is a grammatical error and constitutes a solecism.
