HYMNIS: Go away, Leontichos! You tell such filthy and terrifying stories about yourself, and no one would even look at you anymore when you take such pleasure in gore, let alone drink or sleep with you.
At any rate, I am leaving.
LEONTICHOS: Take double the pay.
HYMNIS: I would not endure to sleep with a murderer.
LEONTICHOS: Do not fear, Hymnis; those deeds were done among the Paphlagonians, and now I live in peace.
HYMNIS: But you are a defiled man, and the blood was dripping from the head of the barbarian which you were carrying on your pike.
εἶτ' ἐγὼ τοιοῦτον ἄνδρα περιβάλω καὶ φιλήσω;
And then should I embrace and kiss such a man?
May it not happen, O Graces!
For this man is no better than the executioner.
LEONTICHOS: And yet, if you had seen me in my armor, I know well, you would have fallen in love.
HYMNIS: Just hearing it, Leontichos, makes me feel sick and shudder, and I think I see the shadows and the ghosts of the slain, and especially of that miserable captain whose head was split in two.
τί οἴει, τὸ ἔργον αὐτὸ καὶ τὸ αἷμα εἰ ἐθεασάμην καὶ κειμένους τοὺς νεκρούς;
What do you think would happen if I had beheld the deed itself and the blood and the dead bodies lying there?
I think I would surely faint away; I have never even seen a cock being slaughtered.
Οὕτως ἀγεννής, ὦ Ὑμνί, καὶ μικρόψυχος εἶ;
LEONTICHOS: Are you so cowardly, Hymnis, and faint-hearted?
And I thought you would be pleased to hear it.
HYMNIS: Well, delight some Lemnian women or Danaids with these stories of yours if you can find them; but I am running away to my mother while it is still day.
Come along, Grammis!
And as for you, farewell, most excellent of chiliarchs and murderer of as many as you please.
LEONTICHOS: Stay, Hymnis, stay—she is gone.
CHENIDAS: For you, Leontichos, have terrified a simple girl by brandishing your crests and recounting unbelievable exploits; and I saw at once how she turned pale while you were still telling that part about the captain, and she puckered her face and shuddered when you said you cleft his head in two.
LEONTICHOS: I thought I would appear more lovely to her.
But you too have utterly ruined me, Chenidas, by suggesting the single combat.
Οὐκ ἔδει γὰρ συνεπιψεύδεσθαί σοι ὁρῶντα τὴν αἰτίαν τῆς ἀλαζονείας;
CHENIDAS: Why, was I not bound to help you in your lying, seeing the reason for your boasting?
But you made it far more terrifying.
ἔστω γάρ, ἀπέτεμες τοῦ κακοδαίμονος Παφλαγόνος τὴν κεφαλήν, τί καὶ κατέπηξας αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τῆς σαρίσης, ὥστε σου καταρρεῖν τὸ αἷμα;
Granted that you cut off the head of the miserable Paphlagonian, why did you have to fix it on your pike so that the blood ran down on you?
LEONTICHOS: That was indeed filthy, Chenidas, since the rest was not badly made up.
Go, then, and persuade her to sleep with me.
Λέγω οὖν ὡς ἐψεύσω ἅπαντα γενναῖος αὐτῇ δόξαι βουλόμενος;
CHENIDAS: Shall I say, then, that you lied about everything, wishing to appear brave to her?
LEONTICHOS: That is shameful, Chenidas.
CHENIDAS: And yet she would not come back otherwise.
Choose, then, one of the two: either to be hated while reputed to be a hero, or to sleep with Hymnis by admitting you lied.
LEONTICHOS: Both are hard; but nevertheless, I choose Hymnis.
Go, then, and say, Chenidas, that I lied, but not in everything.
