§4.1ΕΡΜΗΣ
Ἔστι γάρ τις, ὦ μῆτερ, ἐν οὐρανῷ θεὸς ἀθλιώτερος ἐμοῦ;
HERMES Is there, mother, any god in heaven more miserable than me?
ΜΑΙΑ
Μὴ λέγε, ὦ Ἑρμῆ, τοιοῦτον μηδέν.
MAIA Do not say, Hermes, any such thing.
ΕΡΜΗΣ
Τί μὴ λέγω, ὃς τοσαῦτα πράγματα ἔχω μόνος κάμνων καὶ πρὸς τοσαύτας ὑπηρεσίας διασπώμενος;
HERMES Why should I not say it, I who alone have so much trouble, being worn out and torn apart by so many duties?
ἕωθεν μὲν γὰρ ἐξαναστάντα σαίρειν τὸ συμπόσιον δεῖ καὶ διαστρώσαντα τὴν κλισίαν εὐθετίσαντά τε ἕκαστα παρεστάναι τῷ Διὶ καὶ διαφέρειν τὰς ἀγγελίας τὰς παρ' αὐτοῦ ἄνω καὶ κάτω ἡμεροδρομοῦντα, καὶ ἐπανελθόντα ἔτι κεκονιμένον παρατιθέναι τὴν ἀμβροσίαν·
For in the morning, as soon as I get up, I must sweep the banquet-hall, and after laying out the couches and putting everything in order, stand by Zeus, and carry his messages up and down, running all day long; and when I return, still covered in dust, I must serve the ambrosia.
πρὶν δὲ τὸν νεώνητον τοῦτον οἰνοχόον ἥκειν, καὶ τὸ νέκταρ ἐγὼ ἐνέχεον.
Before this newly-bought cupbearer arrived, I was also the one who poured the nectar.
τὸ δὲ πάντων δεινότατον, ὅτι μηδὲ νυκτὸς καθεύδω μόνος τῶν ἄλλων, ἀλλὰ δεῖ με καὶ τότε τῷ Πλούτωνι ψυχαγωγεῖν καὶ νεκροπομπὸν εἶναι καὶ παρεστάναι τῷ δικαστηρίῳ·
But the most terrible thing of all is that not even at night do I sleep, alone of all the others, but I must even then lead souls for Pluto, act as a guide for the dead, and stand by his tribunal.
οὐ γὰρ ἱκανά μοι τὰ τῆς ἡμέρας ἔργα, ἐν παλαίστραις εἶναι καὶ ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις κηρύττειν καὶ ῥήτορας ἐκδιδάσκειν, ἀλλ’ ἔτι καὶ νεκρικὰ συνδιαπράττειν μεμερισμένον.
For the daytime tasks are not enough for me—being in the palaestras, making proclamations in the assemblies, and training rhetoricians—but I must still, divided as I am, take part in the business of the dead as well.
§4.2ΕΡΜΗΣ
καίτοι τὰ μὲν τῆς Λήδας τέκνα παρ' ἡμέραν ἑκάτερος ἐν οὐρανῷ ἢ ἐν ᾅδου εἰσίν, ἐμοὶ δὲ καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν κἀκεῖνα καὶ ταῦτα ποιεῖν ἀναγκαῖον, καὶ οἱ μὲν Ἀλκμήνης καὶ Σεμέλης ἐκ γυναικῶν δυστήνων γενόμενοι εὐωχοῦνται ἀφρόντιδες, ὁ δὲ Μαίας τῆς Ἀτλαντίδος διακονοῦμαι αὐτοῖς.
HERMES And yet, while Leda's children are in heaven or in Hades on alternate days, each in turn, for me it is necessary every day to do both those things and these. And while the sons of Alcmene and Semele, born of wretched women, feast without a care, I, the son of Maia, daughter of Atlas, must wait upon them.
καὶ νῦν ἄρτι ἥκοντά με ἀπὸ Σιδῶνος παρὰ τῆς Κάδμου θυγατρός, ἐφ' ἣν πέπομφέ με ὀψόμενον ὅ τι πράττει ἡ παῖς, μηδὲ ἀναπνεύσαντα πέπομφεν αὖθις εἰς τὸ Ἄργος ἐπισκεψόμενον τὴν Δανάην, εἶτ' ἐκεῖθεν εἰς Βοιωτίαν, φησίν, ἐλθὼν ἐν παρόδῳ τὴν Ἀντιόπην ἰδέ. καὶ ὅλως ἀπηγόρευκα ἤδη.
And just now, when I have only recently returned from Sidon from the daughter of Cadmus, to whom he had sent me to see what the girl was doing, before I could even take a breath, he has sent me again to Argos to look after Danae, and then from there, he says, "Go to Boeotia, and on your way, see Antiope." Indeed, I am now utterly exhausted.
εἰ γοῦν δυνατὸν ἦν, ἡδέως ἂν ἠξίωσα πεπρᾶσθαι, ὥσπερ οἱ ἐν γῇ κακῶς δουλεύοντες.
At any rate, if it were possible, I would gladly have asked to be sold, just like those who serve miserably on earth.
ΜΑΙΑ
Ἔα ταῦτα, ὦ τέκνον· χρὴ γὰρ πάντα ὑπηρετεῖν τῷ πατρὶ νεανίαν ὄντα.
MAIA Leave these matters, my child; for it is necessary for a young man to serve his father in all things.
καὶ νῦν ὥσπερ ἐπέμφθης σόβει εἰς Ἄργος, εἶτα εἰς τὴν Βοιωτίαν, μὴ καὶ πληγὰς βραδύνων λάβῃς· ὀξύχολοι γὰρ οἱ ἐρῶντες.
And now, just as you were sent, hasten to Argos, and then to Boeotia, lest by lingering you should also receive blows; for those who are in love are quick-tempered.
