§24.1ΖΕΥΣ
Οἷα πεποίηκας, ὦ Τιτάνων κάκιστε;
ZEUS What have you done, O worst of Titans!
ἀπολώλεκας τὰ ἐν τῇ γῇ ἅπαντα, μειρακίῳ ἀνοήτῳ πιστεύσας τὸ ἅρμα, ὃς τὰ μὲν κατέφλεξε πρόσγειος ἐνεχθείς, τὰ δὲ ὑπὸ κρύους διαφθαρῆναι ἐποίησε πολὺ αὐτῶν ἀποσπάσας τὸ πῦρ, καὶ ὅλως οὐδὲν ὅ τι οὐ ξυνετάραξε καὶ ξυνέχεε, καὶ εἰ μὴ ἐγὼ ξυνεὶς τὸ γιγνόμενον κατέβαλον αὐτὸν τῷ κεραυνῷ, οὐδὲ λείψανον ἀνθρώπων ἐπέμεινεν ἄν·
You have destroyed everything on earth, having entrusted the chariot to a foolish boy, who, being carried close to the earth, burned some parts, and made other parts be destroyed by cold, having drawn the fire far away from them; and in short there is nothing that he did not throw into confusion and confound. And if I, having perceived what was happening, had not struck him down with my thunderbolt, not even a remnant of mankind would have survived.
τοιοῦτον ἡμῖν τὸν καλὸν ἡνίοχον καὶ διφρηλάτην ἐκπέπομφας.
Such a fine charioteer and driver you have sent out to us!
ΗΛΙΟΣ
Ἥμαρτον, ὦ Ζεῦ, ἀλλὰ μὴ χαλέπαινε, εἰ ἐπείσθην υἱῷ πολλὰ ἱκετεύοντι· πόθεν γὰρ ἂν καὶ ἤλπισα τηλικοῦτο γενήσεσθαι κακόν;
HELIOS I have erred, O Zeus, but do not be angry if I was persuaded by my son who pleaded many times; for how could I have even expected that such a great evil would happen?
ΖΕΥΣ
Οὐκ ᾔδεις, ὅσης ἐδεῖτο ἀκριβείας τὸ πρᾶγμα καὶ ὡς, εἰ βραχύ τις ἐκβαίη τῆς ὁδοῦ, οἴχεται πάντα;
ZEUS Did you not know how much accuracy the matter required, and how, if one should step out of the way even a little, everything is ruined?
ἠγνόεις δὲ καὶ τῶν ἵππων τὸν θυμόν, ὡς δεῖ ξυνέχειν ἀνάγκῃ τὸν χαλινόν;
And were you ignorant also of the temper of the horses, how it is necessary to hold back the bit with force?
εἰ γὰρ ἐνδοίη τις, ἀφηνιάζουσιν εὐθύς, ὥσπερ ἀμέλει καὶ τοῦτον ἐξήνεγκαν, ἄρτι μὲν ἐπὶ τὰ λαιά, μετ' ὀλίγον δὲ ἐπὶ τὰ δεξιά, καὶ ἐς τὸ ἐναντίον τοῦ δρόμου ἐνίοτε, καὶ ἄνω καὶ κάτω, ὅλως ἔνθα ἐβούλοντο αὐτοί· ὁ δὲ οὐκ εἶχεν ὅ τι χρήσαιτο αὐτοῖς.
For if anyone should yield, they immediately bolt, just as indeed they carried him away, now to the left, and after a little to the right, and sometimes in the opposite direction of the course, and up and down, in short, wherever they themselves wanted; and he did not know what to do with them.
§24.2ΗΛΙΟΣ
Πάντα μὲν ἠπιστάμην ταῦτα καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἀντεῖχον ἐπὶ πολὺ καὶ οὐκ ἐπίστευον αὐτῷ τὴν ἔλασιν· ἐπεὶ δὲ κατελιπάρησε δακρύων καὶ ἡ μήτηρ Κλυμένη μετ' αὐτοῦ, ἀναβιβασάμενος ἐπὶ τὸ ἅρμα ὑπεθέμην, ὅπως μὲν χρὴ βεβηκέναι αὐτόν, ἐφ' ὁπόσον δὲ ἐς τὸ ἄνω ἀφέντα ὑπερενεχθῆναι, εἶτα ἐς τὸ κάταντες αὖθις ἐπινεύειν καὶ ὡς ἐγκρατῆ εἶναι τῶν ἡνιῶν καὶ μὴ ἐφιέναι τῷ θυμῷ τῶν ἵππων· εἶπον δὲ καὶ ἡλίκος ὁ κίνδυνος, εἰ μὴ ὀρθὴν ἐλαύνοι·
HELIOS I understood all these things, and for this reason I held out for a long time and did not entrust the driving to him; but when he begged tearfully, and his mother Clymene with him, having mounted him onto the chariot, I instructed him how he must stand, and how far he should go upward before being carried over, and then to incline downward again, and how to be master of the reins and not yield to the temper of the horses; and I also told him how great the danger was if he did not drive straight.
ὁ δὲ—παῖς γὰρ ἦν—ἐπιβὰς τοσούτου πυρὸς καὶ ἐπικύψας ἐς βάθος ἀχανὲς ἐξεπλάγη, ὡς τὸ εἰκός·
But he—for he was a child—having mounted so great a fire and having looked down into the yawning abyss, was terrified, as was natural.
οἱ δὲ ἵπποι ὡς ᾔσθοντο οὐκ ὄντα ἐμὲ τὸν ἐπιβεβηκότα, καταφρονήσαντες τοῦ μειρακίου ἐξετράποντο τῆς ὁδοῦ καὶ τὰ δεινὰ ταῦτα ἐποίησαν· ὁ δὲ τὰς ἡνίας ἀφείς, οἶμαι δεδιὼς μὴ ἐκπέσῃ αὐτός, εἴχετο τῆς ἄντυγος.
And the horses, when they perceived that it was not I who had mounted, despising the boy, turned aside from the road and did these terrible things; and he, having let go of the reins, I suppose because he was afraid of falling out himself, held onto the chariot-rail.
ἀλλὰ ἐκεῖνός τε ἤδη ἔχει τὴν δίκην κἀμοί, ὦ Ζεῦ, ἱκανὸν τὸ πένθος.
But he has already received his punishment, and for me, O Zeus, the grief is sufficient.
§24.3ΖΕΥΣ
Ἱκανὸν λέγεις τοιαῦτα τολμήσας;
ZEUS Sufficient, you say, after having dared such things?
νῦν μὲν οὖν συγγνώμην ἀπονέμω σοι, ἐς δὲ τὸ λοιπόν, ἤν τι ὅμοιον παρανομήσῃς ἤ τινα τοιοῦτον σεαυτοῦ διάδοχον ἐκπέμψῃς, αὐτίκα εἴσῃ, ὁπόσον τοῦ σοῦ πυρὸς ὁ κεραυνὸς πυρωδέστερος.
Now indeed I grant you pardon; but for the future, if you commit any similar lawless deed or send out any such successor of yourself, you will immediately know how much more fiery the thunderbolt is than your fire.
ὥστε ἐκεῖνον μὲν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ θαπτέτωσαν ἐπὶ τῷ Ἠριδανῷ, ἵναπερ ἔπεσεν ἐκδιφρευθείς, ἤλεκτρον ἐπ' αὐτῷ δακρύουσαι καὶ αἴγειροι γενέσθωσαν ἐπὶ τῷ πάθει, σὺ δὲ ξυμπηξάμενος τὸ ἅρμα—κατέαγε δὲ καὶ ὁ ῥυμὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἅτερος τῶν τροχῶν συντέτριπται—ἔλαυνε ἐπαγαγὼν τοὺς ἵππους.
So let his sisters bury him by the Eridanus, where he fell, having been thrown from the chariot, weeping amber for him, and let them become poplars because of the calamity; and do you, having repaired the chariot—for its pole is broken and one of the two wheels is shattered—drive, having brought back the horses.
ἀλλὰ μέμνησο τούτων ἁπάντων.
But remember all these things.
