§10.1ΖΕΥΣ
Ἄγε, ὦ Γανύμηδες; —ἥκομεν γὰρ ἔνθα ἐχρῆν—φίλησόν με ἤδη, ὅπως εἰδῇς οὐκέτι ῥάμφος ἀγκύλον ἔχοντα οὐδ’ ὄνυχας ὀξεῖς οὐδὲ πτερά, οἷος ἐφαινόμην σοι πτηνὸς εἶναι δοκῶν.
ZEUS Come, Ganymede—for we have arrived where we had to—kiss me now, so that you may know I no longer have a curved beak nor sharp claws nor wings, such as I appeared to you when I seemed to be a bird.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Ἄνθρωπε, οὐκ ἀετὸς ἄρτι ἦσθα καὶ καταπτάμενος ἥρπασάς με ἀπὸ μέσου τοῦ ποιμνίου;
GANNYMEDE Human, weren't you just an eagle, and flying down, didn't you snatch me from the midst of the flock?
πῶς οὖν τὰ μὲν πτερά σοι ἐκεῖνα ἐξερρύηκε, σὺ δὲ ἄλλος ἤδη ἀναπέφηνας;
How then have those wings of yours fallen off, and you have already appeared as someone else?
ΖΕΥΣ
Ἀλλ' οὔτε ἄνθρωπον ὁρᾷς, ὦ μειράκιον, οὔτε ἀετὸν, ὁ δὲ πάντων βασιλεὺς τῶν θεῶν οὗτός εἰμι πρὸς τὸν καιρὸν ἀλλάξας ἐμαυτόν.
ZEUS But you see neither a human, my boy, nor an eagle; I am this king of all the gods, having changed myself for the occasion.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Τί φῄς;
GANNYMEDE What are you saying?
σὺ γὰρ εἶ ὁ Πὰν ἐκεῖνος;
Are you indeed that Pan?
εἶτα πῶς σύριγγα οὐκ ἔχεις οὐδὲ κέρατα οὐδὲ λάσιος εἶ τὰ σκέλη;
Then how is it that you do not have a syrinx, nor horns, nor are your legs hairy?
ΖΕΥΣ
Μόνον γὰρ ἐκεῖνον ἡγῇ θεόν;
ZEUS For do you think he is the only god?
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Ναί· καὶ θύομέν γε αὐτῷ ἔνορχιν τράγον ἐπὶ τὸ σπήλαιον ἄγοντες, ἔνθα ἕστηκε·
GANNYMEDE Yes; and indeed we sacrifice to him an ungelded goat, leading it to the cave where he stands.
σὺ δὲ ἀνδραποδιστής τις εἶναί μοι δοκεῖς.
But you seem to me to be some slave-snatcher.
§10.2ΖΕΥΣ
Εἰπέ μοι, Διὸς δὲ οὐκ ἤκουσας ὄνομα οὐδὲ βωμὸν εἶδες ἐν τῷ Γαργάρῳ τοῦ ὕοντος καὶ βροντῶντος καὶ ἀστραπὰς ποιοῦντος;
ZEUS Tell me, have you not heard the name of Zeus, nor seen the altar on Gargarus of him who rains, thunders, and makes lightning?
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Σύ, ὦ βέλτιστε, φῄς εἶναι, ὃς πρῴην κατέχεας ἡμῖν τὴν πολλὴν χάλαζαν, ὁ οἰκεῖν ὑπεράνω λεγόμενος, ὁ ποιῶν τὸν ψόφον, ᾧ τὸν κριὸν ὁ πατὴρ ἔθυσεν;
GANNYMEDE Are you, my good sir, the one who lately poured down that great hail upon us, who is said to dwell above, who makes the noise, to whom my father sacrificed the ram?
εἶτα τί ἀδικήσαντά με ἀνήρπασας, ὦ βασιλεῦ τῶν θεῶν;
Then what wrong did I do that you snatched me away, O king of the gods?
τὰ δὲ πρόβατα ἴσως οἱ λύκοι διαρπάσονται ἤδη ἐρήμοις ἐπιπεσόντες.
The sheep will probably be torn to pieces by the wolves now, falling upon them in their desolation.
ΖΕΥΣ
Ἔτι γὰρ μέλει σοι τῶν προβάτων ἀθανάτῳ γεγενημένῳ καὶ ἐνταῦθα συνεσομένῳ μεθ' ἡμῶν;
ZEUS Do you still care about sheep, having become immortal and being about to associate here with us?
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Τί λέγεις;
GANNYMEDE What are you saying?
οὐ γὰρ κατάξεις με ἤδη ἐς τὴν Ἴδην τήμερον;
Won't you take me down to Ida today?
ΖΕΥΣ
Οὐδαμῶς· ἐπεὶ μάτην ἀετὸς ἂν εἴην ἀντὶ θεοῦ γεγενημένος.
ZEUS By no means; in that case, I should have become an eagle in vain instead of a god.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Οὐκοῦν ἐπιζητήσει με ὁ πατὴρ καὶ ἀγανακτήσει μὴ εὑρίσκων, καὶ πληγὰς ὕστερον λήψομαι καταλιπὼν τὸ ποίμνιον.
GANNYMEDE Therefore my father will search for me and be angry at not finding me, and I shall receive blows later for abandoning the flock.
ΖΕΥΣ
Ποῦ γὰρ ἐκεῖνος ὄψεταί σε;
ZEUS For where will he see you?
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Μηδαμῶς·
GANNYMEDE No, please.
ποθῶ γὰρ ἤδη αὐτόν.
I long for him now.
εἰ δὲ ἀπάξεις με, ὑπισχνοῦμαί σοι καὶ ἄλλον παρ' αὐτοῦ κριὸν τυθήσεσθαι λύτρα ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ.
And if you bring me back, I promise you that another ram will be sacrificed by him as a ransom for me.
ἔχομεν δὲ τὸν τριετῆ, τὸν μέγαν, ὃς ἡγεῖται πρὸς τὴν νομήν.
We have a three-year-old one, the big one that leads the way to the pasture.
§10.3ΖΕΥΣ
Ὡς ἀφελὴς ὁ παῖς ἐστι καὶ ἁπλοϊκὸς καὶ αὐτὸ δὴ τοῦτο παῖς ἔτι. —ἀλλ’, ὦ Γανύμηδες, ἐκεῖνα μὲν πάντα χαίρειν ἔα καὶ ἐπιλάθου αὐτῶν, τοῦ ποιμνίου καὶ τῆς Ἴδης.
ZEUS How naive and simple the boy is, and just indeed a child!—But, Ganymede, bid farewell to all those things and forget them, both the flock and Ida.
σὺ δὲ—ἤδη γὰρ ἐπουράνοις εἶ—πολλὰ εὖ ποιήσεις ἐντεῦθεν καὶ τὸν πατέρα καὶ πατρίδα, καὶ ἀντὶ μὲν τυροῦ καὶ γάλακτος ἀμβροσίαν ἔδῃ καὶ νέκταρ πίῃ·
Since you are now in heaven, you will do many good things from here both for your father and your homeland; and instead of cheese and milk you will eat ambrosia and drink nectar; moreover, you yourself will pour this for the rest of us.
τοῦτο μέντοι καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις ἡμῖν αὐτὸς παρέξεις ἐγχέων· τὸ δὲ μέγιστον, οὐκέτι ἄνθρωπος, ἀλλ’ ἀθάνατος γενήσῃ, καὶ ἀστέρα σου φαίνεσθαι ποιήσω κάλλιστον, καὶ ὅλως εὐδαίμων ἔσῃ.
And what is greatest, you will no longer be a human, but will become immortal, and I will make a most beautiful star of you appear, and you will be completely happy.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Ἤν δὲ παίζειν ἐπιθυμήσω, τίς συμπαίξεταί μοι;
GANNYMEDE And if I want to play, who will play with me?
ἐν γὰρ τῇ Ἴδῃ πολλοὶ ἡλικιῶται ἦμεν.
For on Ida we were many of the same age.
ΖΕΥΣ
Ἔχεις κἀνταῦθα τὸν συμπαιξόμενόν σοι τουτονὶ τὸν Ἔρωτα καὶ ἀστραγάλους μάλα πολλούς.
ZEUS You have here too this Love here to play with you, and very many knuckle-bones.
θάρρει μόνον καὶ φαιδρὸς ἴσθι καὶ μηδὲν ἐπιπόθει τῶν κάτω.
Only have courage, and be cheerful, and do not long for any of the things below.
§10.4ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Τί δαὶ ὑμῖν χρήσιμος ἂν γενοίμην;
GANNYMEDE And how could I be useful to you?
ἢ ποιμαίνειν δεήσει κἀνταῦθα;
Or will it be necessary to shepherd here too?
ΖΕΥΣ
Οὔκ, ἀλλ’ οἰνοχοήσεις καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ νέκταρος τετάξῃ καὶ ἐπιμελήσῃ τοῦ συμποσίου.
ZEUS No, but you will pour wine and be in charge of the nectar and take care of the banquet.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Τοῦτο μὲν οὐ χαλεπόν· οἶδα γὰρ ὡς χρὴ ἐγχέαι τὸ γάλα καὶ ἀναδοῦναι τὸ κισσύβιον.
GANNYMEDE That is not difficult; for I know how to pour the milk and hand over the ivy-wood cup.
ΖΕΥΣ
Ἰδού, πάλιν οὗτος γάλακτος μνημονεύει καὶ ἀνθρώποις διακονήσεσθαι οἴεται·
ZEUS Look, this one mentions milk again, and thinks he is going to serve humans.
ταυτὶ δ’ ὁ οὐρανός ἐστι, καὶ πίνομεν, ὥσπερ ἔφην, τὸ νέκταρ.
But this is heaven, and we drink, as I said, nectar.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Ἥδιον, ὦ Ζεῦ, τοῦ γάλακτος;
GANNYMEDE Is it sweeter, Zeus, than milk?
ΖΕΥΣ
Εἴσῃ μετ' ὀλίγον καὶ γευσάμενος οὐκέτι ποθήσεις τὸ γάλα.
ZEUS You will know in a little while, and having tasted it, you will no longer long for milk.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Κοιμήσομαι δὲ ποῦ τῆς νυκτός;
GANNYMEDE And where shall I sleep at night?
ἢ μετὰ τοῦ ἡλικιώτου Ἔρωτος;
Or with my playmate, Love?
ΖΕΥΣ
Οὔκ, ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτό σε ἀνήρπασα, ὡς ἅμα καθεύδοιμεν.
ZEUS No, but for this reason I snatched you, so that we might sleep together.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Μόνος γὰρ οὐκ ἂν δύναιο, ἀλλὰ ἥδιόν σοι καθεύδειν μετ' ἐμοῦ;
GANNYMEDE For could you not do it alone, but is it sweeter for you to sleep with me?
ΖΕΥΣ
Ναί, μετά γε τοιούτου οἷος εἶ σύ, Γανύμηδες, οὕτω καλός.
ZEUS Yes, with such a one as you are, Ganymede, so beautiful.
§10.5ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Τί γάρ σε πρὸς τὸν ὕπνον ὀνήσει τὸ κάλλος;
GANNYMEDE And how will beauty help you for sleep?
ΖΕΥΣ
Ἔχει τι θέλγητρον ἡδὺ καὶ μαλακώτερον ἐπάγει αὐτόν.
ZEUS It has a sweet charm and induces sleep more softly.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Καὶ μὴν ὅ γε πατὴρ ἤχθετό μοι συγκαθεύδοντι καὶ διηγεῖτο ἕωθεν, ὡς ἀφεῖλον αὐτοῦ τὸν ὕπνον στρεφόμενος καὶ λακτίζων καί τι φθεγγόμενος μεταξὺ ὁπότε καθεύδοιμι· ὥστε παρὰ τὴν μητέρα ἔπεμπέ με κοιμησόμενον ὡς τὰ πολλά.
GANNYMEDE Yet indeed my father used to be annoyed with me when I slept with him, and would tell me in the morning how I took away his sleep, turning and kicking and saying things in between whenever I was asleep; so he used to send me to my mother to sleep for the most part.
ὥρα δή σοι, εἰ διὰ τοῦτο, ὡς φῄς, ἀνήρπασάς με, καταθεῖναι αὖθις εἰς τὴν γῆν, ἢ πράγματα ἕξεις ἀγρυπνῶν· ἐνοχλήσω γάρ σε συνεχῶς στρεφόμενος.
So it is time for you, if for this reason, as you say, you snatched me, to set me down again upon the earth, or you will have trouble staying awake; for I shall disturb you by turning continually.
ΖΕΥΣ
Τοῦτ' αὐτό μοι τὸ ἥδιστον ποιήσεις, εἰ ἀγρυπνήσαιμι μετὰ σοῦ φιλῶν πολλάκις καὶ περιπτύσσων.
ZEUS You will do this very thing to my greatest pleasure, if I should stay awake with you, kissing you often and embracing you.
ΓΑΝΥΜΗΔΗΣ
Αὐτὸς ἂν εἰδείης· ἐγὼ δὲ κοιμήσομαι σοῦ καταφιλοῦντος.
GANNYMEDE You yourself would know; but I will sleep while you kiss me.
ΖΕΥΣ
Εἰσόμεθα τότε ὃ πρακτέον.
ZEUS We shall know then what is to be done.
νῦν δὲ ἄπαγε αὐτόν, ὦ Ἑρμῆ, καὶ πιόντα τῆς ἀθανασίας ἄγε οἰνοχοήσοντα ἡμῖν διδάξας πρότερον ὡς χρὴ ὀρέγειν τὸν σκύφον.
But now, Hermes, take him away, and having made him drink of immortality, bring him to pour wine for us, having first taught him how he must offer the cup.
