§6.1ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Τὸ μὲν στενὸν τοῦτο, ἔνθα ἡ παῖς κατηνέχθη, Ἑλλήσποντος ἀπ' αὐτῆς καλείσθω· τὸν δὲ νεκρὸν ὑμεῖς, ὦ Νηρεΐδες, παραλαβοῦσαι τῇ Τρῳάδι προσενέγκατε, ὡς ταφείη ὑπὸ τῶν ἐπιχωρίων.
POSEIDON Let this narrow strait, where the girl was carried down, be called the Hellespont after her; and you, Nereids, take up her body and bring it to the Troad, so that she may be buried by the local people.
ΑΜΦΙΤΡΙΤΗ
Μηδαμῶς, ὦ Πόσειδον, ἀλλ’ ἐνταῦθα ἐν τῷ ἐπωνύμῳ πελάγει τεθάφθω· ἐλεοῦμεν γὰρ αὐτὴν οἴκτιστα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρυιᾶς πεπονθυῖαν.
AMPHITRITE By no means, Poseidon, but let her be buried here in the sea that is named after her; for we pity her, who has suffered most wretchedly at the hands of her stepmother.
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Τοῦτο μέν, ὦ Ἀμφιτρίτη, οὐ θέμις· οὐδὲ ἄλλως καλὸν ἐνταῦθά που κεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῇ ψάμμῳ αὐτήν, ἀλλ’ ὅπερ ἔφην ἐν τῇ Τρῳάδι ἢ ἐν Χερρονήσῳ τεθάψεται.
POSEIDON This, Amphitrite, is not lawful; nor is it otherwise fitting for her to lie hereabouts under the sand, but as I said, she shall be buried in the Troad or in the Chersonese.
ἐκεῖνο δὲ παραμύθιον οὐ μικρὸν ἔσται αὐτῇ, ὅτι μετ' ὀλίγον τὰ αὐτὰ καὶ ἡ Ἰνὼ πείσεται καὶ ἐμπεσεῖται ὑπὸ τοῦ Ἀθάμαντος διωκομένη ἐς τὸ πέλαγος ἀπ' ἄκρου τοῦ Κιθαιρῶνος, καθ' ὅπερ καθήκει ἐς τὴν θάλασσαν, ἔχουσα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἐπὶ τῆς ἀγκάλης.
And it will be no small consolation to her that shortly Ino also will suffer the same things and, pursued by Athamas, will cast herself into the sea from the summit of Cithaeron, just where it stretches down to the sea, having also her son in her arms.
ἀλλὰ κἀκείνην σῶσαι δεήσει χαρισαμένους τῷ Διονύσῳ· τροφὸς γὰρ αὐτοῦ καὶ τίτθη ἡ Ἰνώ.
But it will be necessary to save her too, out of favor to Dionysus; for Ino was his nurse and foster-mother.
§6.2ΑΜΦΙΤΡΙΤΗ
Οὐκ ἐχρῆν οὕτω πονηρὰν οὖσαν.
AMPHITRITE It was not right, she being so wicked.
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Ἀλλὰ τῷ Διονύσῳ ἀχαριστεῖν, ὦ Ἀμφιτρίτη, οὐκ ἄξιον.
POSEIDON But to be ungrateful to Dionysus, Amphitrite, is not fitting.
ΝΗΡΕΙΔΕΣ
Αὕτη δὲ ἄρα τί παθοῦσα κατέπεσεν ἀπὸ τοῦ κριοῦ, ὁ ἀδελφὸς δὲ ὁ Φρίξος ἀσφαλῶς ὀχεῖται;
NEREIDS But how on earth did she come to fall from the ram, while her brother Phrixus rides safely?
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Εἰκότως· νεανίας γὰρ καὶ δύναται ἀντέχειν πρὸς τὴν φοράν, ἡ δὲ ὑπ' ἀηθείας ἐπιβᾶσα ὀχήματος παραδόξου καὶ ἀπιδοῦσα ἐς βάθος ἀχανές, ἐκπλαγεῖσα καὶ τῷ θάλπει ἅμα συσχεθεῖσα καὶ ἰλιγγιάσασα πρὸς τὸ σφοδρὸν τῆς πτήσεως ἀκρατὴς ἐγένετο τῶν κεράτων τοῦ κριοῦ, ὧν τέως ἐπείληπτο, καὶ κατέπεσεν ἐς τὸ πέλαγος.
POSEIDON Naturally; for he is a youth and able to hold out against the motion, but she, having mounted an extraordinary vehicle through unfamiliarity and looked down into the yawning abyss, was struck with terror, and at the same time overcome by the heat and seized with giddiness at the violence of the flight, lost her grip on the horns of the ram, which she had been holding until then, and fell into the sea.
ΝΗΡΕΙΔΕΣ
Οὔκουν ἐχρῆν τὴν μητέρα τὴν Νεφέλην βοηθῆσαι πιπτούσῃ;
NEREIDS Ought not then her mother Nephele to have helped her as she fell?
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Ἐχρῆν· ἀλλ’ ἡ Μοῖρα τῆς Νεφέλης πολλῷ δυνατωτέρα.
POSEIDON She ought to have; but Fate is much stronger than Nephele.
