§2.1ΚΥΚΛΩΨ
Ὦ πάτερ, οἷα πέπονθα ὑπὸ τοῦ καταράτου ξένου, ὃς μεθύσας ἐξετύφλωσέ με κοιμωμένῳ ἐπιχειρήσας.
ΚΥΚΛΩΨ O father, what things I have suffered at the hands of that cursed stranger, who, having made me drunk, blinded me, attacking me while I was sleeping!
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Τίς δὲ ἦν ὁ ταῦτα τολμήσας, ὦ Πολύφημε; ΚΥΚΛΩΨ
Τὸ μὲν πρῶτον Οὖτιν ἑαυτὸν ἀπεκάλει, ἐπεὶ δὲ διέφυγε καὶ ἔξω ἦν βέλους, Ὀδυσσεὺς ὀνομάζεσθαι ἔφη. ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Οἶδα ὃν λέγεις, τὸν Ἰθακήσιον· ἐξ Ἰλίου δ’ ἀνέπλει.
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ And who was the one who dared do these things, Polyphemus? ΚΥΚΛΩΨ At first he called himself "Outis," but when he escaped and was out of range of my missiles, he said his name was Odysseus. ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ I know whom you mean, the Ithacan; he was sailing back from Ilium.
ἀλλὰ πῶς ταῦτα ἔπραξεν οὐδὲ πάνυ εὐθαρσὴς ὤν;
But how did he do this, since he is not at all courageous?
§2.2ΚΥΚΛΩΨ
Κατέλαβον αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ ἄντρῳ ἀπὸ τῆς νομῆς ἀναστρέψας πολλούς τινας, ἐπιβουλεύοντας δῆλον ὅτι τοῖς ποιμνίοις·
ΚΥΚΛΩΨ I found them in my cave when I returned from pasture, quite a few of them, clearly plotting against my flocks.
ἐπεὶ γὰρ ἐπέθηκα τῇ θύρᾳ τὸ πῶμα—πέτρα δέ ἐστί μοι παμμεγέθης—καὶ τὸ πῦρ ἀνέκαυσα ἐναυσάμενος ὃ ἔφερον δένδρον ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄρους, ἐφάνησαν ἀποκρύπτειν αὑτοὺς πειρώμενοι·
For when I put the closure on the entrance—which is a huge rock of mine—and kindled the fire, lighting a tree that I had brought down from the mountain, they were seen trying to hide themselves.
ἐγὼ δὲ συλλαβών τινας αὐτῶν, ὥσπερ εἰκὸς ἦν, κατέφαγον λῃστάς γε ὄντας.
I seized some of them and, as was natural, ate them up, since they were indeed robbers.
ἐνταῦθα ὁ πανουργότατος ἐκεῖνος, εἴτε Οὖτις εἴτε Ὀδυσσεὺς ἦν, δίδωσί μοι πιεῖν φάρμακόν τι ἐγχέας, ἡδὺ μὲν καὶ εὔοσμον, ἐπιβουλότατον δὲ καὶ ταραχωδέστατον·
Then that most villainous fellow, whether he was Outis or Odysseus, poured and gave me to drink a certain drug, sweet and fragrant indeed, but most treacherous and troublemaking.
ἅπαντα γὰρ εὐθὺς ἐδόκει μοι περιφέρεσθαι πιόντι καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον αὐτὸ ἀνεστρέφετο καὶ οὐκέτι ὅλως ἐν ἐμαυτοῦ ἤμην, τέλος δὲ εἰς ὕπνον κατεσπάσθην.
For as soon as I drank it, everything seemed to me to spin around, and the cave itself was turning upside down, and I was no longer at all in my right mind, and at last I was dragged down into sleep.
ὁ δὲ ἀποξύνας τὸν μοχλὸν καὶ πυρώσας προσέτι ἐτύφλωσέ με καθεύδοντα, καὶ ἀπ' ἐκείνου τυφλός εἰμί σοι, ὦ Πόσειδον.
But he, having sharpened the wooden stake and moreover heated it in the fire, blinded me as I slept; and since then, I have been blind for you, Poseidon.
§2.3ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Ὡς βαθὺν ἐκοιμήθης, ὦ τέκνον, ὃς οὐκ ἐξέθορες μεταξὺ τυφλούμενος.
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ How deeply you slept, my child, since you did not leap up while being blinded!
ὁ δ’ οὖν Ὀδυσσεὺς πῶς διέφυγεν;
But how then did Odysseus escape?
οὐ γὰρ ἂν εὖ οἶδ’ ὅτι ἠδυνήθη ἀποκινῆσαι τὴν πέτραν ἀπὸ τῆς θύρας. ΚΥΚΛΩΨ
Ἀλλ' ἐγὼ ἀφεῖλον, ὡς μᾶλλον αὐτὸν λάβοιμι ἐξιόντα, καὶ καθίσας παρὰ τὴν θύραν ἐθήρων τὰς χεῖρας ἐκπετάσας, μόνα παρεὶς τὰ πρόβατα εἰς τὴν νομήν, ἐντειλάμενος τῷ κριῷ ὅσα ἐχρῆν πράττειν αὐτὸν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ.
For I know well that he would not have been able to move the rock away from the entrance. ΚΥΚΛΩΨ But I removed it, so that I might catch him more easily as he went out; and sitting by the door, I hunted for him with my hands spread out, letting only the sheep go out to pasture, and instructing the ram as to what he ought to do on my behalf.
§2.4ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Μανθάνω· ὑπ' ἐκείνοις ἔλαθον ὑπεξελθόντες·
ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ I understand; they slipped out secretly under them.
σὲ δὲ τοὺς ἄλλους Κύκλωπας ἔδει ἐπιβοήσασθαι ἐπ' αὐτόν. ΚΥΚΛΩΨ
Συνεκάλεσα, ὦ πάτερ, καὶ ἧκον· ἐπεὶ δὲ ἤροντο τοῦ ἐπιβουλεύοντος τοὔνομα κἀγὼ ἔφην ὅτι Οὖτίς ἐστι, μελαγχολᾶν οἰηθέντες με ἀπιόντες ᾤχοντο.
But you ought to have called the other Cyclopes to your aid against him. ΚΥΚΛΩΨ I did call them, father, and they came; but when they asked the name of the plotter and I said that it was "Outis," thinking that I was mad, they went away and left.
οὕτω κατεσοφίσατό με ὁ κατάρατος τῷ ὀνόματι.
Thus the cursed man outwitted me by his name.
καὶ ὃ μάλιστα ἠνίασέ με, ὅτι καὶ ὀνειδίζων ἐμοὶ τὴν συμφοράν, Οὐδὲ ὁ πατήρ, φησίν, ὁ Ποσειδῶν ἰάσεται σε. ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ
Θάρρει, ὦ τέκνον· ἀμυνοῦμαι γὰρ αὐτόν, ὡς μάθῃ ὅτι, εἰ καὶ πήρωσίν μοι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν ἰᾶσθαι ἀδύνατον, τὰ γοῦν τῶν πλεόντων [τὸ σῴζειν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἀπολλύναι] ἐπ' ἐμοί ἐστι· πλεῖ δὲ ἔτι.
And what vexed me most of all was that, mocking my misfortune, he said, "Not even your father Poseidon will heal you." ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ Be of good courage, my child; for I will punish him, so that he may learn that, even if it is impossible for me to heal the blindness of eyes, at least the fate of sailors—to save them and to destroy them—is in my power; and he is still sailing.
