§19ΛΥΚΙΝΟΣ
Τί τοῦτο, ὦ Ἀδείμαντε;
LYCINUS "What is this, Adeimantus?
καταδύσεταί σοι τὸ πλοῖον, οὐ γὰρ ἴσον βάρος πυροῦ καὶ τοῦ ἰσαρίθμου χρυσίου. ΑΔΕΙΜΑΝΤΟΣ
Μὴ φθόνει, ὦ Λυκῖνε, ἀλλ’ ἐπειδὰν εἰς σὲ παρέλθῃ ἡ εὐχή, τὴν Πάρνηθα ἐκείνην, εἰ θέλεις, ὅλην χρυσῆν ποιήσας ἔχε, κἀγὼ σιωπήσομαί σοι.
Your ship will sink, for the weight of wheat and of an equal number of gold coins is not the same." ADEIMANTUS "Do not begrudge me, Lycinus.

Ἀλλ' ὑπὲρ ἀσφαλείας τοῦτο ἔγωγε τῆς σῆς ἐποιησάμην, ὡς μὴ ἀπολέσθαι ἅπαντας μετὰ τοῦ χρυσίου.

οἱ δελφῖνες γὰρ αὐτὸ ὑποδύντες ἐξοίσουσιν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.

Ἄμεινον γὰρ ἦν πιθανώτερον αὐτὸ ποιεῖν και τινα θησαυρὸν ὑπὸ τῇ κλίνῃ ἀνευρεῖν, ὡς μὴ πράγματα ἔχοις ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου μετατιθεὶς χρυσίον ἐς τὸ ἄστυ.
Or do you think that, while a certain citharode was saved by them and recovered his reward in return for his song, and another child, a dead one, was likewise brought on a dolphin to the Isthmus, Adeimantus' newly bought servant will lack a loving dolphin?" ΑΔΕΙΜΑΝΤΟΣ
Εὖ λέγεις, καὶ ἀνορωρύχθω θησαυρὸς ὑπὸ τὸν Ἑρμῆν τὸν λίθινον, ὅς ἐστιν ἡμῖν ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ, μέδιμνοι χίλιοι ἐπισήμου χρυσίου. εὐθὺς οὖν κατὰ τὸν Ἡσίοδον οἶκος τὸ πρῶτον, ὡς ἂν ἐπισημότατα οἰκοίην, καὶ τὰ περὶ τὸ ἄστυ πάντα ὠνησάμην ἤδη πλὴν ὅσα θύμον καὶ λίθοι, καὶ ἐν Ἐλευσῖνι ὅσα ἐπὶ θαλάττῃ καὶ περὶ τὸν Ἰσθμὸν ὀλίγα τῶν ἀγώνων ἕνεκα, εἴ ποτε δὴ τὰ Ἴσθμια ἐπιδημήσαιμι, καὶ τὸ Σικυώνιον πεδίον, καὶ ὅλως εἴ πού τι ἢ συνηρεφὲς ἢ ἔνυδρον ἢ εὔκαρπον ἐν τῇ Ἑλλάδι, πάντα ἐν ὀλίγῳ Ἀδειμάντου ἔσται.
Right away then, according to Hesiod, first a house, so that I might live in the most distinguished manner, and I have already bought all the land around the city except what is thyme and stones, and in Eleusis all that is by the sea, and around the Isthmus a few things for the sake of the games, if I should ever visit the Isthmian games, and the Sicyonian plain, and in short, if there is anywhere in Greece anything either shaded or well-watered or fruitful, all will in a short time be Adeimantus'.

Εἶτα πῶς ὁ οἰνοχόος ὀρέξει πλῆρες οὕτω βαρὺ ἔκπωμα;

ἐγὼ δὲ καὶ τὰς τραπέζας ὅλας χρυσᾶς ποιήσομαι καὶ τὰς κλίνας χρυσᾶς, εἰ δὲ μὴ σιωπήσῃ, καὶ τοὺς διακόνους αὐτούς. ΛΥΚΙΝΟΣ
Ὅρα μόνον μὴ ὥσπερ τῷ Μίδᾳ καὶ ὁ ἄρτος σοι καὶ τὸ ποτὸν χρυσὸς γένηται καὶ πλουτῶν ἄθλιος ἀπόλῃ λιμῷ διαφθαρεὶς πολυτελεῖ. §22ΑΔΕΙΜΑΝΤΟΣ
Τὰ σὰ ῥυθμιεῖς πιθανώτερον, ὦ Λυκῖνε, μετ' ὀλίγον, ἐπειδὰν αὐτὸς αἰτῇς.
I will make the tables entirely of gold and the beds of gold, and if you do not keep silent, the servants themselves too." ἐσθὴς ἐπὶ τούτοις ἁλουργὶς καὶ ὁ βίος οἷος ἁβρότατος, ὕπνος ἐφ' ὅσον ἥδιστος, φίλων πρόσοδοι καὶ δεήσεις καὶ τὸ ἅπαντας ὑποπτήσσειν καὶ προσκυνεῖν, καὶ οἱ μὲν ἕωθεν πρὸς ταῖς θύραις ἄνω καὶ κάτω περιπατήσουσιν, ἐν αὐτοῖς δὲ καὶ Κλεαίνετος καὶ Δημόκριτος οἱ πάνυ, καὶ προσελθοῦσιν γε αὐτοῖς καὶ πρὸ τῶν ἄλλων εἰσδεχθῆναι ἀξιοῦσι θυρωροὶ ἑπτὰ ἐφεστῶτες, εὐμεγέθεις βάρβαροι, προσαραξάτωσαν ἐς τὸ μέτωπον εὐθὺ τὴν θύραν, οἷα νῦν αὐτοὶ ποιοῦσιν.
Added to this, my clothing shall be purple and my life of the most luxurious kind, my sleep as sweet as possible, with visits and entreaties from friends, and everyone cowering before me and bowing. And some will walk up and down in front of my doors from early morning, and among them even Cleaenetus and Democritus, the very famous men; and when they approach and demand to be admitted before the others, let the seven doorkeepers stationed there, huge barbarians, slam the door right in their foreheads, just as they themselves do now.
ἐγὼ δέ, ὁπόταν δόξῃ, προκύψας ὥσπερ ὁ ἥλιος ἐκείνων μὲν οὐδ’ ἐπιβλέψομαι ἐνίους, εἰ δέ τις πένης, οἷος ἦν ἐγὼ πρὸ τοῦ θησαυροῦ, φιλοφρονήσομαι τοῦτον καὶ λουσάμενον ἥκειν κελεύσω τὴν ὥραν ἐπὶ τὸ δεῖπνον.
And I, whenever I please, looking out like the sun, will not even glance at some of them, but if there is any poor man, such as I was before the treasure, I will welcome him kindly and order him to come to dinner at the appointed hour after bathing.
οἱ δὲ ἀποπνιγήσονται οἱ πλούσιοι ὁρῶντες ὀχήματα, ἵππους καὶ παῖδας ὡραίους ὅσον δισχιλίους, ἐξ ἁπάσης ἡλικίας ὅ τι περ τὸ ἀνθηρότατον.
And the rich will choke with envy seeing my carriages, horses, and beautiful boys, as many as two thousand, the very flower of every age."
