§7Σκύθης δέ ἐστι τῶν παρ' ἡμῖν εὐπατριδῶν, καὶ ὅμως τἀκεῖ πάντα ἀφεὶς ἥκει συνεσόμενος ὑμῖν καὶ τὰ κάλλιστα ὀψόμενος τῆς Ἑλλάδος, κἀγὼ ἐπίτομόν τινα ταύτην ἐξεῦρον αὐτῷ, ὅπως ῥᾷστα καὶ αὐτὸς μάθοι πάντα καὶ γνώριμος γένοιτο τοῖς ἀρίστοις·
He is a Scythian, of the nobles among us, and yet, having left all things there, he has come to associate with you and to see the most beautiful things of Greece; and I found this shortcut for him, so that he himself might most easily learn everything and become known to the best.
τοῦτο δ’ ἦν σοὶ προσαγαγεῖν αὐτόν.
And this was to bring him to you.
εἰ τοίνυν ἐγὼ Σόλωνα οἶδα, οὕτω ποιήσεις καὶ προξενήσεις αὐτοῦ καὶ πολίτην γνήσιον ἀποφανεῖς τῆς Ἑλλάδος.
If, therefore, I know Solon, you will do so, and will act as his patron, and will show him to be a genuine citizen of Greece.
καὶ ὅπερ σοι ἔφην μικρὸν ἔμπροσθεν, ὦ Ἀνάχαρσι, πάντα ἑώρακας ἤδη Σόλωνα ἰδών· τοῦτο αἱ Ἀθῆναι, τοῦτο ἡ Ἑλλάς·
And as I told you a little while ago, Anacharsis, you have already seen everything by seeing Solon; this is Athens, this is Greece.
οὐκέτι ξένος σύ γε, πάντες σε ἴσασι, πάντες σε φιλοῦσι.
You are no longer a stranger; all know you, all love you.
τηλικοῦτόν ἐστι τὸ κατὰ τὸν πρεσβύτην τοῦτον.
So great is the influence of this old man.
ἁπάντων ἐπιλήσῃ τῶν ἐν Σκυθίᾳ συνὼν αὐτῷ.
You will forget all things in Scythia when you are with him.
ἔχεις τῆς ἀποδημίας τὰ ἆθλα, τοῦ ἔρωτος τὸ τέλος.
You have the prizes of your travels, the end of your passion.
οὗτός σοι ὁ Ἑλληνικὸς κανών, τοῦτο δεῖγμα τῆς φιλοσοφίας τῆς Ἀττικῆς.
This is your Greek standard, this is the specimen of Attic philosophy.
οὕτω τοίνυν γίγνωσκε ὡς εὐδαιμονέστατος ὤν, ὃς συνέσῃ Σόλωνι καὶ φίλῳ χρήσῃ αὐτῷ.
Know then that you are most happy, who will associate with Solon and enjoy him as a friend.
§8Μακρὸν ἂν εἴη διηγήσασθαι, ὅπως μὲν ἥσθη ὁ Σόλων τῷ δώρῳ, οἷα δὲ εἶπεν, ὡς δὲ τὸ λοιπὸν συνῆσαν, ὁ μὲν παιδεύων καὶ διδάσκων τὰ κάλλιστα, ὁ Σόλων, καὶ φίλον ἅπασι ποιῶν τὸν Ἀνάχαρσιν καὶ προσάγων τοῖς Ἑλλήνων καλοῖς καὶ πάντα τρόπον ἐπιμελούμενος, ὅπως ἥδιστα διατρίψῃ ἐν τῇ Ἑλλάδι, ὁ δὲ τεθηπὼς τὴν σοφίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ μηδὲ τὸν ἕτερον πόδα ἑκὼν εἶναι ἀπολειπόμενος.
It would be long to relate how Solon was pleased with the gift, what kind of things he said, and how they associated for the remaining time—Solon educating and teaching him the most beautiful things, making Anacharsis a friend to all, introducing him to the beauties of the Greeks, and in every way taking care that he should spend his time in Greece most pleasantly; and Anacharsis marveling at his wisdom and not willingly leaving him even by a single foot.
ὡς γοῦν ὑπέσχετο αὐτῷ ὁ Τόξαρις, ἐξ ἑνὸς ἀνδρὸς τοῦ Σόλωνος ἅπαντα ἔγνω ἐν ἀκαρεῖ καὶ πᾶσιν ἦν γνώριμος καὶ ἐτιμᾶτο δι’ ἐκεῖνον.
At any rate, as Toxaris promised him, through one man, Solon, he learned everything in an instant, and was known to all and honored because of him.
οὐ γὰρ μικρὸν ἦν Σόλων ἐπαινῶν, ἀλλ’ οἱ ἄνθρωποι καὶ τοῦτο ὡς νομοθέτῃ ἐπείθοντο καὶ ἐφίλουν οὓς ἐκεῖνος δοκιμάζοι καὶ ἐπίστευον ἀρίστους ἄνδρας εἶναι.
For it was no small thing when Solon praised, but people believed in this too as from a lawgiver, and loved those whom he approved, and believed them to be the best of men.
τὰ τελευταῖα καὶ ἐμυήθη μόνος βαρβάρων Ἀνάχαρσις, δημοποίητος γενόμενος, εἰ χρὴ Θεοξένῳ πιστεύειν καὶ τοῦτο ἱστοροῦντι περὶ αὐτοῦ· καὶ οὐκ ἂν οὐδὲ ἀνέστρεψεν οἶμαι ἐς Σκύθας, εἰ μὴ Σόλων ἀπέθανεν.
At last, Anacharsis was even initiated, being the only barbarian to be so, having been made a citizen, if one must believe Theoxenus who relates this about him; and I think he would not even have returned to the Scythians if Solon had not died.
§9Βούλεσθε οὖν ἐπαγάγω ἤδη τῷ μύθῳ τὸ τέλος, ὡς μὴ ἀκέφαλος περινοστοίη;
Do you wish, then, that I now bring the end to the story, so that it may not wander about without a head?
ὥρα γοῦν εἰδέναι οὗτινός μοι εἵνεκα ὁ Ἀνάχαρσις ἐκ Σκυθίας καὶ Τόξαρις τὰ νῦν ἐς Μακεδονίαν ἥκετον ἔτι καὶ Σόλωνα γέροντα ἄνδρα ἐπαγομένω Ἀθήνηθεν.
At any rate, it is time to know for what reason Anacharsis from Scythia and Toxaris have now come to Macedonia, still bringing along with them the old man Solon from Athens.
φημὶ δὴ ὅμοιόν τι καὶ αὐτὸς παθεῖν τῷ Ἀναχάρσιδι—καὶ πρὸς Χαρίτων μὴ νεμεσήσητέ μοι τῆς εἰκόνος, εἰ βασιλικῷ ἀνδρὶ ἐμαυτὸν εἴκασα· βάρβαρος μὲν γὰρ κἀκεῖνος καὶ οὐδέν τι φαίης ἂν τοὺς Σύρους ἡμᾶς φαυλοτέρους εἶναι τῶν Σκυθῶν.
Indeed, I say that I myself have suffered something similar to Anacharsis—and by the Graces, do not be angry with me for the comparison, if I have likened myself to a royal man; for he too was a barbarian, and you would not say that we Syrians are any worse than the Scythians.
ἀτὰρ οὐδὲ κατὰ τὸ βασιλικὸν εἰσποιῶ τἀμὰ ἐς τὴν ὁμοιότητα, κατ' ἐκεῖνα δέ.
Yet I do not bring my case into the likeness on account of royalty, but on account of those other things.
ὅτε γὰρ πρῶτον ἐπεδήμησα ὑμῶν τῇ πόλει, ἐξεπλάγην μὲν εὐθὺς ἰδὼν τὸ μέγεθος καὶ τὸ κάλλος καὶ τῶν ἐμπολιτευομένων τὸ πλῆθος καὶ τὴν ἄλλην δύναμιν καὶ λαμπρότητα πᾶσαν.
For when I first visited your city, I was immediately struck with amazement on seeing its size, beauty, the multitude of its citizens, and all its other power and splendor.
ὥστε ἐπὶ πολὺ ἐτεθήπειν πρὸς ταῦτα καὶ οὐκ ἐξήρκουν τῷ θαύματι, οἷόν τι καὶ ὁ νησιώτης ἐκεῖνος νεανίσκος ἐπεπόνθει πρὸς τὴν τοῦ Μενελάου οἰκίαν.
So for a long time I was amazed at these things and could not contain my wonder, just like that young islander who experienced the same towards the house of Menelaus.
καὶ ἔμελλον οὕτω διατεθήσεσθαι τὴν γνώμην ἰδὼν πόλιν ἀκμάζουσαν ἀκμῇ τοσαύτῃ καὶ κατὰ τὸν ποιητὴν ἐκεῖνον

ἀνθοῦσαν ἀγαθοῖς πᾶσιν οἷς θάλλει πόλις.
And my mind was about to be so affected, seeing a city flourishing in such prosperity, and according to that poet, "blooming with all the good things with which a city flourishes.
