Therefore, I am present, bringing democracy to you, proclaiming to all already to take courage, and announcing the glad tidings of freedom.
Enjoy, then, already the fruits of my deeds.
For the acropolis, as you see, is empty of wicked men, and no one commands us, but it is possible both to honor and to judge and to speak against according to the laws, and all these things have come to pass for you because of me and because of my boldness, and from that single murder, after which the father was no longer able to live.
Therefore, I demand that the reward owed to me be given by you for these things, not because I am greedy for gain or small-minded, nor because I chose to benefit my country for hire, but because I wish my achievements to be confirmed by the reward, and that my attempt not be slandered or become dishonorably regarded as incomplete and judged unworthy of a prize.
But this man here objects and says that I am not acting reasonably in wishing to be honored and to receive a reward; for he says that I am not a tyrannicide, nor has anything been done by me according to the law, but that something is lacking in my deed for the demanding of the reward.
τί λοιπὸν ἀπαιτεῖς παρʼ ἡμῶν;
I ask him, then: "What else do you demand from us?
οὐκ ἠβουλήθην;
Did I not resolve?
οὐκ ἀνῆλθον;
Did I not go up?
οὐκ ἐφόνευσα;
Did I not slay?
οὐκ ἠλευθέρωσα;
Did I not liberate?
μή τις ἐπιτάττει;
Does anyone command?
μή τις κελεύει;
Does anyone order?
μή τις ἀπειλεῖ δεσπότης;
Does any master threaten?
Did any of the evildoers escape me?" You could not say so.
On the contrary, all is full of peace, and all the laws are in force, freedom is clear, democracy is secure, marriages are uninsulted, children are without fear, virgins are safe, and the city is celebrating our common good fortune.
τίς οὖν ὁ τούτων ἁπάντων αἴτιος;
Who, then, is the cause of all these things?
τίς ὁ ἐκεῖνα μὲν παύσας, τὰ δὲ παρεσχημένος;
Who is the one who stopped those evils and provided these blessings?
For if there is anyone who deserves to be honored before me, I yield the prize, I step aside from the reward.
εἰ δὲ μόνος ἐγὼ πάντα διεπραξάμην τολμῶν καὶ κινδυνεύων, ἀνιών, ἀναιρῶν, κολάζων, διʼ ἀλλήλων τιμωρούμενος, τί μου διαβάλλεις τὰ κατορθώματα;
But if I alone accomplished everything by being bold and risking danger, going up, slaying, punishing, and taking vengeance through one another, why do you slander my achievements?
τί δὲ ἀχάριστον πρός με τὸν δῆμον ποιεῖς εἶναι;
And why do you make the people be ungrateful to me?
§11οὐ γὰρ αὐτὸν ἐφόνευσας τὸν τύραννον· ὁ δὲ νόμος τυραννοκτόνῳ δίδωσιν τὴν δωρεάν. διαφέρει δέ, εἰπέ μοι, τί ἢ αὐτὸν ἀνελεῖν ἢ τοῦ θανάτου παρασχεῖν τὴν αἰτίαν;
"For you did not slay the tyrant himself; and the law gives the reward to the tyrannicide." Tell me, what difference does it make whether one slays him or provides the cause of his death?
For my part, I think there is none.
Rather, the lawgiver looked to this alone: freedom, democracy, and deliverance from evils.
This is what he honored, this is what he deemed worthy of reward, which you cannot say has not come about because of me.
For if I slew the one because of whom he was unable to live, I myself have wrought the slaughter.
The murder is mine; the hand was his.
Therefore, do not split hairs any longer about the manner of his end, nor examine how he died, but only whether he is no more, and whether his being no more is due to me.
For otherwise, you seem to me likely to examine that as well, and to slander our benefactors, if someone killed him not with a sword, but with a stone or a piece of wood or in some other way.
τί δέ, εἰ λιμῷ ἐξεπολιόρκησα τὸν τύραννον τὴν ἀνάγκην τῆς τελευτῆς παρέχων, ἀπῄτεις ἂν καὶ τότε παρʼ ἐμοῦ αὐτόχειρα τὴν σφαγήν, ἢ ἐνδεῖν ἔλεγές μοί τι πρὸς τὸν νόμον, καὶ ταῦτα χαλεπώτερον τοῦ κακούργου πεφονευμένου;
And what if I had blockaded the tyrant by famine, providing the necessity of his end? Would you then too have demanded of me a slaughter with my own hand, or would you have said that something was lacking in me in respect of the law, and that too when the villain was slain in a harsher way?
ἓν μόνον ἐξέταζε, τοῦτο ἀπαίτει, τοῦτο πολυπραγμόνει, τίς τῶν πονηρῶν λείπεται, ἢ τίς ἐλπὶς τοῦ φόβου ἢ τί ὑπόμνημα τῶν συμφορῶν;
Examine only one thing, demand this, busy yourself with this: who of the wicked is left, or what hope of fear, or what monument of our misfortunes remains?
But if all is pure and peaceful, it is the part of a slanderer to wish, by using the manner of what was done, to deprive one of the reward for his labors.
