But the thrice-cursed man also devised a trick that was not unintelligent, nor worthy of a common bandit.
For, opening the sent letters and reading them, if he found anything risky and dangerous among the questions, he would keep it himself and not send it back, so that he might hold those who had sent them under his control and almost as slaves through fear, as they remembered what kind of things they had asked.
You can understand what sort of questions the rich and powerful are likely to ask.
He therefore received many things from them, since they knew he held them inside his nets.
And I want to tell you also some of the oracles given to Rutilianus.
For when he inquired about his son by a former wife, who was of age for education, as to whom he should appoint as his teacher in studies, he said: "Pythagoras, and the noble singer, the messenger of wars." Then, when the boy died a few days later, he was at a loss and had nothing to say to those who blamed him, the oracle having been refuted so immediately.
But the excellent Rutilianus himself anticipated him and defended the oracle, saying that the god had prefigured this very thing, and for this reason had commanded him to choose no teacher while he lived, but rather Pythagoras and Homer, who had died long ago, with whom it was likely that the youth was now together in Hades.
τί τοίνυν μέμφεσθαι ἄξιον Ἀλεξάνδρῳ, εἰ τοιούτοις ἀνθρωπίσκοις ἐνδιατρίβειν ἠξίου;
What ground for blame, then, is there against Alexander, if he thought fit to spend his time on such wretched men?
And again, when he asked whose soul he had succeeded, he said: "First you were Pelides, after that Menander, then he who now appears, and next you shall be a sunbeam, and you shall live for a hundred and eighty years.
"
"But he died at seventy of melancholy, not waiting for the god's promise.
And this oracle too was of the self-spoken ones.
And when he once asked also about marriage, he said explicitly: "Marry the daughter of Alexander and Selene." For he had long before spread a report that the daughter he had was born to him by Selene; for Selene had fallen in love with him, seeing him once asleep, which is her custom, to love beautiful ones who are asleep.
And the most intelligent Rutilianus, without any delay, sent immediately for the girl and celebrated the marriage, a bridegroom of sixty years, and lived with her, appeasing his mother-in-law Selene with whole hecatombs, and thinking that he too had become one of the heavenly beings.
But when he once got hold of affairs in Italy, he devised ever greater things and sent oracle-mongers everywhere in the Roman empire, predicting to the cities to guard against plagues and fires and earthquakes; and he promised them that he would surely help so that none of these things should happen.
And he sent one particular oracle, which was also self-spoken, to all the nations during the plague; and the verse was one: "Phoebus of the unshorn hair drives away the cloud of the plague." And this verse was to be seen written everywhere on the gateways as a safeguard against the plague.
But the opposite turned out for most people; for by some chance those houses especially were emptied which had the verse inscribed on them.
And do not think that I say this, that they perished because of the verse; but by some chance it happened so.
Perhaps also the majority, trusting in the verse, grew careless and lived more slackly, contributing nothing to assist the oracle against the disease, as if they had their syllables fighting for them and the unshorn Phoebus shooting down the plague.
However, he established in Rome itself very many inquirers from among his co-conspirators, who reported to him the opinions of each person and pre-announced the questions and what they especially desired, so that he might be found ready with the answers even before those who were sent had arrived.
