Prometheus: And that this has also become useful to the gods, you might learn in this way, if you were to look upon the whole earth, no longer parched and unlovely, but adorned with cities, cultivations, and cultivated plants, and the sea sailed upon, and the islands inhabited, and everywhere altars, sacrifices, temples, and festivals; and all the streets are full of Zeus, and all the market-places of men.
For indeed, if I had fashioned this possession for myself alone, I might perhaps have been grasping; but as it is, I have brought it and laid it in common for you yourselves.
Nay, rather, while it is possible to see temples of Zeus, Apollo, Hera, and also of you, Hermes, everywhere, of Prometheus there is none.
ὁρᾷς ὅπως τὰ ἐμαυτοῦ μόνα σκοπῶ, τὰ κοινὰ δὲ καταπροδίδωμι καὶ ἐλάττω ποιῶ;
Do you see how I look only to my own affairs, but betray and diminish the common ones?
Prometheus: Consider this too for me, Hermes: if any good thing seems to you to be without a witness—such as a possession or a work of art which no one will see or praise—whether it would be equally sweet and delightful to the possessor.
πρὸς δὴ τί τοῦτʼ ἔφην;
Why indeed did I say this?
Because if men had not been born, the beauty of the whole would have happened to be without a witness, and we were destined to be wealthy with a wealth that would neither be admired by any other nor equally valued by ourselves; for we would not even have had anything smaller with which to compare it, nor would we have understood how happy we were, not seeing any who were without a share of our blessings.
For in this way indeed, the great would seem great, if it were measured against the small.
But you, when you ought to honor me for this public service, have crucified me, and have paid me this reward for my counsel.
Prometheus: But, you say, there are some evildoers among them, and they commit adultery, wage war, marry sisters, and plot against fathers.
παρʼ ἡμῖν γὰρ οὐχὶ πολλὴ τούτων ἀφθονία;
Is there not indeed a great abundance of these things among us?
And yet surely no one on this account would blame Uranus and Gaea because they established us.
And perhaps you might also say this, that it is necessary for us to have much trouble in taking care of them.
Would not, therefore, on this account, the shepherd also be vexed at having his flock, because it is necessary for him to take care of it?
And yet this very labor is also pleasant; besides, the care is not without pleasure, having some occupation.
ἢ τί γὰρ ἂν ἐπράττομεν οὐκ ἔχοντες ὧν προνοοῦμεν τούτων;
Or indeed, what would we do if we did not have these things to provide for?
We would be idle, drinking nectar and stuffing ourselves with ambrosia, doing nothing.
Prometheus: But what chokes me most of all is this: that while you find fault with the creation of humans, and especially of women, nevertheless you love them and do not cease going down, sometimes becoming bulls, sometimes satyrs and swans, and you deem it right to make gods out of them.
But, you will perhaps say, men ought indeed to have been fashioned, but in some other way, and not resembling us.
καὶ τί ἂν ἄλλο παράδειγμα τούτου ἄμεινον προεστησάμην, ὃ πάντως καλὸν ἠπιστάμην;
And what other better pattern than this could I have set before me, which I knew to be altogether beautiful?
ἢ ἀσύνετον καὶ θηριῶδες ἔδει καὶ ἄγριον ἀπεργάσασθαι τὸ ζῷον;
Or ought I to have made the creature unintelligent, beast-like, and wild?
καὶ πῶς ἂν ἢ θεοῖς ἔθυσαν ἢ τὰς ἄλλας ὑμῖν τιμὰς ἀπένειμαν οὐχὶ τοιοῦτοι γενόμενοι;
And how would they have sacrificed to the gods or rendered you other honors, if they had not been such as they are?
But you, when they bring you hecatombs, do not hesitate, even if it is necessary to go to the Ocean with the blameless Ethiopians; yet the one who is the cause of your honors and sacrifices, you have crucified.
Concerning men, then, this is sufficient.
