§2.33κύκλῳ μὲν περὶ πᾶσαν αὐτὴν ὕλη ἀνέστηκεν, τὰ δένδρα δέ ἐστι μήκωνες ὑψηλαὶ καὶ μανδραγόραι καὶ ἐπʼ αὐτῶν πολύ τι πλῆθος νυκτερίδων· τοῦτο γὰρ μόνον ἐν τῇ νήσῳ γίνεται ὄρνεον.
All around it, a forest stood, and the trees are tall poppies and mandrakes, and upon them is a very great multitude of bats, for this is the only bird that exists on the island.
ποταμὸς δὲ παραρρεῖ πλησίον ὁ ὑπʼ αὐτῶν καλούμενος Νυκτίπορος, καὶ πηγαὶ δύο παρὰ τὰς πύλας· ὀνόματα καὶ ταύταις, τῇ μὲν Νήγρετος, τῇ δὲ Παννυχία.
And a river flows near, called by them "Nyctiporos", and there are two springs near the gates; these too have names, to the one "Negretos" and to the other "Pannychia".
ὁ περίβολος δὲ τῆς πόλεως ὑψηλός τε καὶ ποικίλος, ἴριδι τὴν χρόαν ὁμοιότατος·
The wall of the city is high and multicolored, very like a rainbow in color.
πύλαι μέντοι ἔπεισιν οὐ δύο, καθάπερ Ὅμηρος εἴρηκεν, ἀλλὰ τέσσαρες, δύο μὲν πρὸς τὸ τῆς Βλακείας πεδίον ἀποβλέπουσαι, ἡ μὲν σιδηρᾶ, ἡ δὲ ἐκ κεράμου πεποιημένη, καθʼ ἃς ἐλέγοντο ἀποδημεῖν αὐτῶν οἵ τε φοβεροὶ καὶ φονικοὶ καὶ ἀπηνεῖς, δύο δὲ πρὸς τὸν λιμένα καὶ τὴν θάλατταν, ἡ μὲν κερατίνη, ἡ δὲ καθʼ ἣν ἡμεῖς παρήλθομεν ἐλεφαντίνη.
However, there are not two gates on it, as Homer has said, but four, two of them looking toward the Plain of Sloth, the one of iron, and the other made of clay, through which the fearful and murderous and cruel of them were said to go abroad, and two toward the harbor and the sea, the one of horn, and the other, through which we entered, of ivory.
εἰσιόντι δὲ εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐν δεξιᾷ μέν ἐστι τὸ Νυκτῷον — σέβουσι γὰρ θεῶν ταύτην μάλιστα καὶ τὸν Ἀλεκτρυόνα· ἐκείνῳ δὲ πλησίον τοῦ λιμένος τὸ ἱερὸν πεποίηται — ἐν ἀριστερᾷ δὲ τὰ τοῦ Ὕπνου βασίλεια.
To one entering the city, on the right is the temple of Night—for of the gods they worship her most, and also Alectryon; and for him, the temple is built near the harbor—and on the left is the palace of Sleep.
οὗτος γὰρ δὴ ἄρχει παρʼ αὐτοῖς σατράπας δύο καὶ ὑπάρχους πεποιημένος, Ταραξίωνά τε τὸν Ματαιογένους καὶ Πλουτοκλέα τὸν Φαντασίωνος.
For he indeed rules over them, having made two satraps and governors, Taraxion the son of Mataiogenes, and Plutocles the son of Phantasio.
ἐν μέσῃ δὲ τῇ ἀγορᾷ πηγή τίς ἐστιν, ἣν καλοῦσι Καρεῶτιν· καὶ πλησίον ναοὶ δύο, Ἀπάτης καὶ Ἀληθείας· ἔνθα καὶ τὸ ἄδυτόν ἐστιν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὸ μαντεῖον, οὗ προειστήκει προφητεύων Ἀντιφῶν ὁ τῶν ὀνείρων ὑποκριτής, ταύτης παρὰ τοῦ Ὕπνου λαχὼν τῆς τιμῆς.
And in the middle of the marketplace is a certain spring, which they call "Careotis"; and nearby two temples, of Deceit and of Truth; where also is their inner sanctuary and oracle, over which Antiphon the interpreter of dreams stood as prophet, having obtained this honor from Sleep.
§2.34αὐτῶν μέντοι τῶν ὀνείρων οὔτε φύσις οὔτε ἰδέα ἡ αὐτή, ἀλλʼ οἱ μὲν μακροὶ ἦσαν καὶ καλοὶ καὶ εὐειδεῖς, οἱ δὲ μικροὶ καὶ ἄμορφοι, καὶ οἱ μὲν χρύσεοι, ὡς ἐδόκουν, οἱ δὲ ταπεινοί τε καὶ εὐτελεῖς.
However, of the dreams themselves, neither the nature nor the appearance was the same, but some were tall, beautiful, and comely, while others were small and ugly, and some were golden, as it seemed, while others were humble and cheap.
ἦσαν δʼ ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ πτερωτοί τινες καὶ τερατώδεις, καὶ ἄλλοι καθάπερ ἐς πομπὴν διεσκευασμένοι, οἱ μὲν ἐς βασιλέας, οἱ δὲ ἐς θεούς, οἱ δὲ εἰς ἄλλα τοιαῦτα κεκοσμημένοι.
And there were among them also some winged and monstrous ones, and others decorated as if for a procession, some adorned as kings, others as gods, and others as other such things.
πολλοὺς δὲ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐγνωρίσαμεν, πάλαι παρʼ ἡμῖν ἑωρακότες, οἳ δὴ καὶ προσῄεσαν καὶ ἠσπάζοντο ὡς ἂν καὶ συνήθεις ὑπάρχοντες, καὶ παραλαβόντες ἡμᾶς καὶ κατακοιμίσαντες πάνυ λαμπρῶς καὶ δεξιῶς ἐξένιζον, τήν τε ἄλλην ὑποδοχὴν μεγαλοπρεπῆ παρασκευάσαντες καὶ ὑπισχνούμενοι βασιλέας τε ποιήσειν καὶ σατράπας.
And many of them we even recognized, having seen them long ago among us, who indeed approached and greeted us as though they were old acquaintances, and taking us and putting us to sleep, they entertained us very splendidly and hospitably, having prepared both other magnificent welcomes and promising to make us both kings and satraps.
ἔνιοι δὲ καὶ ἀπῆγον ἡμᾶς εἰς τὰς πατρίδας καὶ τοὺς οἰκείους ἐπεδείκνυον καὶ αὐθημερὸν ἐπανῆγον.
And some even led us away to our native lands and showed us our relatives, and brought us back on the same day.
§2.35ἡμέρας μὲν οὖν τριάκοντα καὶ ἴσας νύκτας παρʼ αὐτοῖς ἐμείναμεν καθεύδοντες εὐωχούμενοι.
So for thirty days and as many nights we remained with them, sleeping and feasting.
ἔπειτα δὲ ἄφνω βροντῆς μεγάλης καταρραγείσης ἀνεγρόμενοι καὶ ἀναθορόντες ἀνήχθημεν ἐπισιτισάμενοι.
But then, a great thunder having suddenly broken out, we woke up and, springing up, we put to sea after taking in provisions.
τριταῖοι δʼ ἐκεῖθεν τῇ Ὠγυγίᾳ νήσῳ προσσχόντες ἀπεβαίνομεν.
And on the third day from there, having touched at the island of Ogygia, we landed.
πρότερον δʼ ἐγὼ λύσας τὴν ἐπιστολὴν ἀνεγίνωσκον τὰ γεγραμμένα.
But beforehand, having opened the letter, I read what had been written.
ἦν δὲ τοιάδε· Ὀδυσσεὺς Καλυψοῖ χαίρειν.
And it was as follows: "Odysseus to Calypso, greeting.
ἴσθι με, ὡς τὰ πρῶτα ἐξέπλευσα παρὰ σοῦ τὴν σχεδίαν κατασκευασάμενος, ναυαγίᾳ χρησάμενον μόλις ὑπὸ Λευκοθέας διασωθῆναι εἰς τὴν τῶν Φαιάκων χώραν, ὑφʼ ὧν ἐς τὴν οἰκείαν ἀποπεμφθεὶς κατέλαβον πολλοὺς τῆς γυναικὸς μνηστῆρας ἐν τοῖς ἡμετέροις τρυφῶντας· ἀποκτείνας δὲ ἅπαντας ὑπὸ Τηλεγόνου ὕστερον τοῦ ἐκ Κίρκης μοι γενομένου ἀνῃρέθην, καὶ νῦν εἰμι ἐν τῇ Μακάρων νήσῳ πάνυ μετανοῶν ἐπὶ τῷ καταλιπεῖν τὴν παρὰ σοὶ δίαιταν καὶ τὴν ὑπὸ σοῦ προτεινομένην ἀθανασίαν.
Know that, as soon as I sailed away from you after constructing my raft, having suffered shipwreck, I was with difficulty saved by Leucothea into the country of the Phaeacians, by whom being sent back to my home, I found many suitors of my wife living in luxury in our house; and having killed them all, I was later slain by Telegonus, the son born to me from Circe, and now I am in the Island of the Blessed, greatly repenting of having left the life with you and the immortality offered by you.
ἢν οὖν καιροῦ λάβωμαι, ἀποδρὰς ἀφίξομαι πρὸς σέ. ταῦτα μὲν ἐδήλου ἡ ἐπιστολή, καὶ περὶ ἡμῶν, ὅπως ξενισθῶμεν.
If therefore I find an opportunity, I will run away and come to you." The letter indicated these things, and also concerning us, that we might be entertained.
