§1.40τῷ δʼ ἐνάτῳ μηνὶ πέμπτῃ ἱσταμένου, περὶ τὴν δευτέραν τοῦ στόματος ἄνοιξιν — ἅπαξ γὰρ δὴ τοῦτο κατὰ τὴν ὥραν ἑκάστην ἐποίει τὸ κῆτος, ὥστε ἡμᾶς πρὸς τὰς ἀνοίξεις τεκμαίρεσθαι τὰς ὥρας — περὶ οὖν τὴν δευτέραν, ὥσπερ ἔφην, ἄνοιξιν, ἄφνω βοή τε πολλὴ καὶ θόρυβος ἠκούετο καὶ ὥσπερ κελεύσματα καὶ εἰρεσίαι·
On the fifth day of the ninth month, about the second opening of the mouth—for the whale indeed did this once during each hour, so that we measured the hours by the openings—about the second opening, therefore, as I said, suddenly a great shout and clamor was heard, and as it were orders and rowing.
ταραχθέντες οὖν ἀνειρπύσαμεν ἐπʼ αὐτὸ τὸ στόμα τοῦ θηρίου καὶ στάντες ἐνδοτέρω τῶν ὀδόντων καθεωρῶμεν ἁπάντων ὧν ἐγὼ εἶδον θεαμάτων παραδοξότατον, ἄνδρας μεγάλους, ὅσον ἡμισταδιαίους τὰς ἡλικίας, ἐπὶ νήσων μεγάλων προσπλέοντας ὥσπερ ἐπὶ τριήρων.
Being disturbed, therefore, we crawled up to the mouth itself of the beast, and standing inside the teeth, we beheld the most extraordinary of all the sights that I have ever seen: huge men, about half a stadium in height, sailing on great islands as if on triremes.
οἶδα μὲν οὖν ἀπίστοις ἐοικότα ἱστορήσων, λέξω δὲ ὅμως.
I know indeed that I am about to relate things resembling what is incredible, but nevertheless I will speak.
νῆσοι ἦσαν ἐπιμήκεις μέν, οὐ πάνυ δὲ ὑψηλαί, ὅσον ἑκατὸν σταδίων ἑκάστη τὸ περίμετρον· ἐπὶ δὲ αὐτῶν ἔπλεον τῶν ἀνδρῶν ἐκείνων ἀμφὶ τοὺς εἴκοσι καὶ ἑκατόν·
The islands were long, but not very high, each being about a hundred stadia in circumference; and upon them sailed about one hundred and twenty of those men.
τούτων δὲ οἱ μὲν παρʼ ἑκάτερα τῆς νήσου καθήμενοι ἐφεξῆς ἐκωπηλάτουν κυπαρίττοις μεγάλαις αὐτοκλάδοις καὶ αὐτοκόμοις ὥσπερ ἐρετμοῖς, κατόπιν δὲ ἐπὶ τῆς πρύμνης, ὡς ἐδόκει, κυβερνήτης ἐπὶ λόφου ὑψηλοῦ εἱστήκει χάλκεον ἔχων πηδάλιον πεντασταδιαῖον τὸ μῆκος·
Of these, some sitting in order on each side of the island rowed with large cypresses, branches and leaves still on, as oars; and behind on the stern, as it seemed, a helmsman stood on a high hill, holding a bronze rudder five stadia in length.
ἐπὶ δὲ τῆς πρῴρας ὅσον τετταράκοντα ὡπλισμένοι αὐτῶν ἐμάχοντο, πάντα ἐοικότες ἀνθρώποις πλὴν τῆς κόμης· αὕτη δὲ πῦρ ἦν καὶ ἐκάετο, ὥστε οὐδὲ κορύθων ἐδέοντο.
And on the prow about forty of them armed were fighting, resembling humans in all respects except for their hair; and this was fire and was burning, so that they had no need of helmets.
ἀντὶ δὲ ἱστίων ὁ ἄνεμος ἐμπίπτων τῇ ὕλῃ, πολλῇ οὔσῃ ἐν ἑκάστῃ, ἐκόλπου τε ταύτην καὶ ἔφερε τὴν νῆσον ᾗ ἐθέλοι ὁ κυβερνήτης·
And instead of sails, the wind, falling upon the forest, which was abundant on each island, filled it and carried the island wherever the helmsman wished.
κελευστὴς δὲ ἐφειστήκει αὐτοῖς, καὶ πρὸς τὴν εἰρεσίαν ὀξέως ἐκινοῦντο ὥσπερ τὰ μακρὰ τῶν πλοίων.
And a boatswain stood over them, and they moved swiftly to the rowing like long ships.
§1.41τὸ μὲν οὖν πρῶτον δύο ἢ τρεῖς ἑωρῶμεν, ὕστερον δὲ ἐφάνησαν ὅσον ἑξακόσιοι, καὶ διαστάντες ἐπολέμουν καὶ ἐναυμάχουν.
At first, therefore, we saw two or three, but later about six hundred appeared, and separating they fought and waged a sea battle.
πολλαὶ μὲν οὖν ἀντίπρῳροι συνηράσσοντο ἀλλήλαις, πολλαὶ δὲ καὶ ἐμβληθεῖσαι κατεδύοντο, αἱ δὲ συμπλεκόμεναι καρτερῶς διηγωνίζοντο καὶ οὐ ῥᾳδίως ἀπελύοντο· οἱ γὰρ ἐπὶ τῆς πρῴρας τεταγμένοι πᾶσαν ἐπεδείκνυντο προθυμίαν ἐπιβαίνοντες καὶ ἀναιροῦντες· ἐζώγρει δὲ οὐδείς.
Many indeed dashed against each other prow to prow, and many being rammed were sunk, and those which grappled fought fiercely and did not easily separate; for those stationed on the prow showed all eagerness in boarding and killing, and no one took prisoners.
ἀντὶ δὲ χειρῶν σιδηρῶν πολύποδας μεγάλους ἐκδεδεμένους ἀλλήλοις ἐπερρίπτουν, οἱ δὲ περιπλεκόμενοι τῇ ὕλῃ κατεῖχον τὴν νῆσον.
And instead of iron grappling irons, they threw huge octopuses tied to one another, and these, wrapping themselves around the forest, held the island fast.
ἔβαλλον μέντοι καὶ ἐτίτρωσκον ὀστρέοις τε ἁμαξοπληθέσι καὶ σπόγγοις πλεθριαίοις.
They also threw and wounded with oysters as large as a wagon-full and sponges of a plethron in size.
§1.42ἡγεῖτο δὲ τῶν μὲν Αἰολοκένταυρος, τῶν δὲ Θαλασσοπότης· καὶ μάχη αὐτοῖς ἐγεγένητο, ὡς ἐδόκει, λείας ἕνεκα· ἐλέγετο γὰρ ὁ Θαλασσοπότης πολλὰς ἀγέλας δελφίνων τοῦ Αἰολοκενταύρου ἐληλακέναι, ὡς ἦν ἀκούειν ἐπικαλούντων ἀλλήλοις καὶ τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν βασιλέων ἐπιβοωμένων.
And Aeolocentaur led some, and Thalassopotes the others; and the battle had arisen between them, as it seemed, for the sake of plunder; for Thalassopotes was said to have driven away many herds of dolphins of Aeolocentaur, as was to be heard from them calling out against each other and shouting the names of their kings.
τέλος δὲ νικῶσιν οἱ τοῦ Αἰολοκενταύρου καὶ νήσους τῶν πολεμίων καταδύουσιν ἀμφὶ τὰς πεντήκοντα καὶ ἑκατόν· καὶ ἄλλας τρεῖς λαμβάνουσιν αὐτοῖς ἀνδράσιν· αἱ δὲ λοιπαὶ πρύμναν κρουσάμεναι ἔφευγον.
And finally those of Aeolocentaur conquered, and they sank about one hundred and fifty of the enemy's islands, and took three others with their men; and the rest turned back and fled.
οἱ δὲ μέχρι τινὸς διώξαντες, ἐπειδὴ ἑσπέρα ἦν, τραπόμενοι πρὸς τὰ ναυάγια τῶν πλείστων ἐπεκράτησαν καὶ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ἀνείλοντο· καὶ γὰρ ἐκείνων κατέδυσαν νῆσοι οὐκ ἐλάττους τῶν ὀγδοήκοντα.
And they, having pursued them up to a certain point, since it was evening, turned to the wrecks and got possession of most of them and took up their own; for of their own islands no fewer than eighty had sunk.
ἔστησαν δὲ καὶ τρόπαιον τῆς νησομαχίας ἐπὶ τῇ κεφαλῇ τοῦ κήτους μίαν τῶν πολεμίων νήσων ἀνασταυρώσαντες.
And they also erected a trophy of the island-battle upon the head of the whale, having crucified one of the enemy's islands.
ἐκείνην μὲν οὖν τὴν νύκτα περὶ τὸ θηρίον ηὐλίσαντο ἐξάψαντες αὐτοῦ τὰ ἀπόγεια καὶ ἐπʼ ἀγκυρῶν πλησίον ὁρμισάμενοι· καὶ γὰρ ἀγκύραις ἐχρῶντο μεγάλαις ὑαλίναις καρτεραῖς.
That night, therefore, they encamped about the beast, having fastened their hawsers to it and anchored near; for they used large, strong glass anchors.
τῇ ὑστεραίᾳ δὲ θύσαντες ἐπὶ τοῦ κήτους καὶ τοὺς οἰκείους θάψαντες ἐπʼ αὐτοῦ ἀπέπλεον ἡδόμενοι καὶ ὥσπερ παιᾶνας ᾄδοντες.
On the next day, having sacrificed upon the whale and buried their kinsmen upon it, they sailed away rejoicing and singing as it were paeans.
ταῦτα μὲν τὰ κατὰ τὴν νησομαχίαν γενόμενα.
These, then, were the things that happened in the island-battle.
