While the Acragantines were engaged in these matters, some of the soldiers who had been left behind in Syracuse by Agathocles, having seized Echetla, were plundering both the territory of Leontini and that of Camarina.
Therefore, since the cities were suffering severely because their land was being ravaged and all their crops destroyed, Xenodicus, having invaded these districts, freed the Leontines and the Camarinaeans from the war; and having reduced Echetla, a strong place, by siege, he restored the democracy to its citizens, and struck terror into the Syracusans.
On the whole, as he marched along, he freed both the garrisons and the cities from the control of the Carthaginians.
At the same time these things were being done, the Syracusans, hard pressed by the scarcity of food and learning that grain-ships were about to make a voyage to Syracuse, manned twenty triremes, and, having watched for the barbarians who were accustomed to blockade them to be off their guard, they sailed out unnoticed and, having made their way to Megara, watched for the arrival of the merchants.
After this, when the Carthaginians had sailed out against them with thirty ships, at first they attempted to fight a naval battle, but being quickly driven to the land, they swam ashore to a temple of Hera.
A battle having taken place, therefore, around the vessels, and the Carthaginians throwing iron grappling-hooks and dragging them away by force from the land, ten triremes were captured, but some who came to the rescue from the city saved the others.
And such was the state of affairs in Sicily.
