The battle having taken such an end, Demetrius made his way rapidly to Azotus around midnight, having covered two hundred and seventy stadia.
From there he sent a herald concerning the recovery of the dead, striving in every way to grant the deceased their fitting burial.
For it happened that most of his friends had fallen, of whom the most illustrious were Pithon, who shared the command on equal terms with him, and Boeotus, who had lived with his father Antigonus for a long time and had shared in every secret.
In the battle-line more than five hundred fell, of whom the majority were cavalrymen among the illustrious men, and over eight thousand were captured.
But Ptolemy and Seleucus, granting the recovery of the dead, sent back to Demetrius both the captured royal baggage and those of the prisoners who were accustomed to spend time around the court, without ransom; for they said that they were not at variance with Antigonus over these things, but because, although the war had been waged in common first against Perdiccas and later against Eumenes, he did not restore the portions of the spear-won land to his friends, and after concluding a friendship with Seleucus, on the contrary, he had deprived him of the satrapy of Babylonia against all justice.
Ptolemy, having sent the captured soldiers to Egypt, ordered them to be distributed among the nomarchies, while he himself, after burying all his own men who died in the battle magnificently, advanced with his force against the cities of Phoenicia, besieging some, and bringing over others by persuasion.
But Demetrius, not having a sufficient force, sent a letter-carrier to his father, requesting him to send help as quickly as possible; and he himself, passing into Tripolis of Phoenicia, summoned the soldiers from Cilicia and all the others who were guarding either cities or fortresses situated far away from the enemy.
