would not pity the fortune of those who suffered.
For all the gates of the city were closed, and more than four thousand were killed on the same day, accused only of this, that they were more refined than the others.
Of those who fled, some who rushed to the gates were captured, while others, throwing themselves down from the walls, escaped safely to the neighboring cities, and some, leaping heedlessly because of fear, were dashed to pieces.
The multitude of those who were exiled from their homeland was over six thousand, of whom the majority fled to the Agrigentines and were deemed worthy of appropriate care there.
Agathocles and his followers, having spent the day in the slaughter of the citizens, did not refrain even from outrage and lawlessness against women, but they assumed that they would exact sufficient vengeance from those who had escaped death through the mistreatment of their relatives; for it was likely that the husbands and fathers would suffer things more terrible than death when they considered the outrages to their weddings and the dishonor of their virgin daughters.
From these things we must strip away the artificial tragedy that is customary for historians, first of all out of pity for the sufferers, and secondly because none of the readers seeks to hear the details, since the knowledge of them is ready at hand.
For those who dared in broad daylight to slaughter in the streets and in the marketplace those who had done no wrong, do not need anyone to declare what they did at night by themselves in the houses, and how they behaved toward orphan virgins and women who were destitute of helpers and had fallen under the absolute power of their bitterest enemies.
And Agathocles, after two days had passed, when at last he was sated with the slaughter of the citizens, gathered those who had been captured alive and released Deinocrates because of their former friendship, but of the others, he put to death those who were most hostilely disposed, and exiled the rest.
