But Cassander, having advanced into Messenia and found the city guarded by Polyperchon, decided against besieging it for the present; and having passed into Arcadia, he left Damis as manager of Megalopolis, while he himself proceeded to the Argive territory, and having celebrated the Nemean Games, made his return to Macedonia.
When he had departed, Alexander, going around the cities in the Peloponnese with Aristodemus, attempted to expel the garrisons stationed by Cassander and to restore freedom to the cities.
On learning of these things, Cassander sent Prepelaus to him, urging him to defect from Antigonus and to ally with him sincerely.
If he should do this, he said he would give him the generalship of all the Peloponnese and declare him master of the forces, and furthermore, honor him in accordance with his worth.
And Alexander, seeing that what he had been fighting against Cassander for from the beginning was being conceded to him, made an alliance and was appointed general of the Peloponnese.
While these things were being transacted, Polyclitus, who had been sent by the associates of Seleucus, sailed from Cyprus and put in at Cenchreae.
But having heard of Alexander's defection and seeing that no hostile force was in existence, he made his voyage toward Pamphylia.
Having been carried along from there to Aphrodisias in Cilicia, when he heard that Theodotus, the admiral of Antigonus, was sailing along from Patara in Lycia with the ships from Rhodes, which had crews from Caria, and also that Perilaus was passing by on land with soldiers, providing safety for the passage of the fleet, he outgeneraled them both.
For having landed his soldiers, he hid them in a suitable place through which it was necessary for the enemy to make their passage, while he himself sailed with all his ships and, keeping a promontory in front of him, watched for the arrival of the enemy.
When the infantry fell first into the ambush, it happened that Perilaus was captured, and of the rest, some fell fighting and others were taken alive.
And when the ships from Rhodes attempted to bring aid to their own men, Polyclitus, sailing against them suddenly with his fleet in order, easily routed the confused enemy.
Consequently, it happened that all the ships were captured, along with not a few of the men, among whom was Theodotus himself, who, having been wounded, died a few days later.
Polyclitus, therefore, having gained such great advantages without danger, sailed back to Cyprus, and from there to Pelusium; and Ptolemy, having praised him, honored him with great gifts and promoted him much more as one who had been the author of a great success, and he released Perilaus and some of the other captives when an embassy came from Antigonus concerning them.
He himself went to the place called Ecregma, and having met there for conference with Antigonus, he departed again, since Antigonus did not concede the demands.
