§19.50.1τοῦ δʼ ἔαρος ἀρχομένου καὶ τῆς ἐνδείας ἀεὶ μᾶλλον αὐξανομένης συνέδραμον πολλοὶ τῶν στρατιωτῶν καὶ τὴν Ὀλυμπιάδα παρεκάλουν αὐτοὺς ἀφεῖναι διὰ τὴν ἀπορίαν.
At the beginning of spring, as the shortage increased more and more, many of the soldiers gathered together and entreated Olympias to let them go because of their destitution.
ἡ δὲ οὔτε σιτομετρεῖν αὐτοὺς δυναμένη τὸ παράπαν οὔτε τὴν πολιορκίαν λῦσαι συνεχώρησεν ἀπαλλάττεσθαι.
Since she was completely unable either to measure out grain for them or to raise the siege, she permitted them to depart.
§19.50.2ὁ δὲ Κάσανδρος προσδεξάμενος ἅπαντας τοὺς αὐτομολήσαντας καὶ φιλανθρώπως χρησάμενος διαπέστειλεν ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις· ἤλπιζε γὰρ παρὰ τούτων πυθομένους τοὺς Μακεδόνας τὴν Ὀλυμπιάδος ἀσθένειαν ἀπελπιεῖν αὐτῆς τὰ πράγματα.
Cassander, having received all those who deserted and treated them humanely, sent them away to the various cities; for he hoped that when the Macedonians learned from them of the weakness of Olympias, they would despair of her cause.
§19.50.3οὐ κακῶς δʼ αὐτοῦ στοχασαμένου περὶ τοῦ μέλλοντος οἱ μὲν συναγωνίζεσθαι διεγνωκότες τοῖς πολιορκουμένοις μετενόησαν καὶ πρὸς Κάσανδρον ἀπεχώρησαν, μόνοι δὲ τῶν ἐν Μακεδονίᾳ τὴν εὔνοιαν διεφύλαξαν Ἀριστόνους καὶ Μόνιμος, ὧν Ἀριστόνους μὲν Ἀμφιπόλεως ἐκυρίευεν, §19.50.4ὁ δʼ ἕτερος Πέλλης.
As he had not aimed poorly at what was to happen, those who had decided to fight along with the besieged changed their minds and went over to Cassander, and of those in Macedonia, only Aristonous and Monimus preserved their loyalty, of whom Aristonous was master of Amphipolis, and the other of Pella.
ἡ δʼ Ὀλυμπιὰς ὁρῶσα τοὺς μὲν πλείους μεταθεμένους πρὸς Κάσανδρον, τοὺς δʼ ὑπολοίπους τῶν φίλων οὐκ ἰσχύοντας βοηθεῖν, ἐπεχείρησε πεντήρη ναῦν κατασπᾶν καὶ διὰ ταύτης αὑτήν τε καὶ τοὺς φίλους σώζειν.
But Olympias, seeing that the majority had gone over to Cassander and that the rest of her friends were unable to bring help, attempted to launch a quinquereme and by means of this to save herself and her friends.
§19.50.5αὐτομόλου δέ τινος τὸ γινόμενον ἀπαγγείλαντος τοῖς πολεμίοις ὁ μὲν Κάσανδρος ἐπιπλεύσας ἐκυρίευσε τοῦ σκάφους, ἡ δʼ Ὀλυμπιὰς ἀπογνοῦσα τὰ καθʼ αὑτὴν πρέσβεις ἐξέπεμψε περὶ διαλύσεων.
But when a certain deserter reported what was being done to the enemy, Cassander, sailing against it, became master of the vessel, and Olympias, despairing of her situation, sent envoys to treat for terms.
οἰομένου δὲ δεῖν τοῦ Κασάνδρου τὰ καθʼ αὑτὴν ἐπιτρέπειν μόγις ἔπεισεν ὥστε μόνην ἐξαίρετον λαβεῖν τὴν τοῦ σώματος ἀσφάλειαν.
Although Cassander thought she ought to entrust her fate unconditionally to him, she barely persuaded him to let her have, as a single exception, the safety of her person.
§19.50.6Κάσανδρος δὲ κυριεύσας τῆς πόλεως ἐξέπεμψε τοὺς παραληψομένους τήν τε Πέλλαν καὶ τὴν Ἀμφίπολιν.
Cassander, having become master of the city, sent out those who were to take over both Pella and Amphipolis.
§19.50.7ὁ μὲν οὖν τῆς Πέλλης κυριεύων Μόνιμος ἀκούσας τὰ συμβάντα περὶ τὴν Ὀλυμπιάδα παρέδωκε τὴν πόλιν· ὁ δʼ Ἀριστόνους τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἀντέχεσθαι τῶν πραγμάτων διεγνώκει, στρατιώτας τε συχνοὺς ἔχων καὶ προσφάτως εὐημερηκώς· ὀλίγαις γὰρ ἔμπροσθεν ἡμέραις παραταξάμενος πρὸς τὸν Κασάνδρου στρατηγὸν Κρατεύαν τοὺς πλείστους μὲν ἀνεῖλε τῶν ἀντιταχθέντων, αὐτὸν δὲ τὸν Κρατεύαν μετὰ δισχιλίων φυγόντα τῆς Βισαλτίας εἰς Βεδύνδια περιστρατοπεδεύσας ἐξεπολιόρκησε καὶ τὰ ὅπλα παρελόμενος ὑπόσπονδον ἀφῆκε.
Now Monimus, who was master of Pella, having heard what had happened concerning Olympias, surrendered the city; but Aristonous at first had resolved to hold on to the cause, as he had many soldiers and had recently succeeded; for a few days before, having drawn up his forces against Cassander's general, Crateuas, he slew most of those arrayed against him, and having besieged Crateuas himself, who had fled from Bisaltia to Bedyndia with two thousand men, he forced his surrender and, having taken away his arms, let him go under a truce.
§19.50.8διὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἐπαιρόμενος καὶ τὸν Εὐμενοῦς θάνατον ἀγνοῶν, ἔτι δὲ τοὺς περὶ Ἀλέξανδρον καὶ Πολυπέρχοντα νομίζων συνεπιλήψεσθαι τὴν Ἀμφίπολιν οὐκ ἔφη παραδώσειν.
Elated by these things and ignorant of the death of Eumenes, and further thinking that the party of Alexander and Polysperchon would help him, he refused to surrender Amphipolis.
ἐπεὶ δὲ ἔγραψε πρὸς αὐτὸν Ὀλυμπιὰς ἀπαιτοῦσα τὴν πίστιν καὶ κελεύουσα παραδοῦναι, διαλαβὼν ἀναγκαῖον εἶναι τὸ προστασσόμενον ποιεῖν, τήν τε πόλιν ἐνεχείρισε καὶ τὰ πιστὰ περὶ τῆς ἀσφαλείας ἔλαβεν.
But when Olympias wrote to him demanding his loyalty and ordering him to surrender, concluding that it was necessary to do what was commanded, he delivered up the city and received pledges for his safety.
