§19.43.1τῶν δὲ πεζῶν οἱ μὲν ἀργυράσπιδες συμφράξαντες καὶ βιαιότερον τοῖς ἀντιτεταγμένοις ἐπιπεσόντες τοὺς μὲν ἐν χειρῶν νόμῳ διέφθειραν, τοὺς δὲ συνηνάγκασαν φυγεῖν.
But of the infantry, the Silver Shields, having formed a close order and fallen upon those opposed to them more violently, destroyed some in hand-to-hand combat and forced others to flee.
ἀκατάσχετοι δὲ ταῖς ὁρμαῖς γενόμενοι καὶ πρὸς πᾶσαν τὴν τῶν ἐναντίων φάλαγγα διαγωνιδάμενοι τοσοῦτον ταῖς εὐχειρίαις καὶ ῥώμαις ὑπερεῖχον ὥσθʼ ἑαυτῶν μὲν ἀποβαλεῖν μηθένα, τῶν δʼ ἐναντίων ἀνελεῖν μὲν ὑπὲρ τοὺς πεντακισχιλίους, τρέψασθαι δὲ τοὺς πεζοὺς πάντας, ὄντας πολλαπλασίους.
Becoming irresistible in their impulses and fighting against the entire phalanx of the enemy, they so excelled in skill and strength that they lost none of themselves, but slew of the enemy over five thousand and routed all the infantry, who were many times their number.
§19.43.2Εὐμενὴς δὲ πυθόμενος τὴν μὲν ἀποσκευὴν ἡλωκέναι, τοὺς δʼ ἱππεῖς τοὺς μετὰ Πευκέστου μὴ μακρὰν ἀπέχειν, ἐπεχείρησεν ἀθροίζειν ἅπαντας καὶ πάλιν ἱππομαχεῖν πρὸς Ἀντίγονον· ἤλπιζε γὰρ μάχῃ κρατήσας οὐ μόνον τὴν ἰδίαν ἀποσκευὴν σώσειν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὴν τῶν πολεμίων προσλήψεσθαι.
Eumenes, having learned that the baggage had been captured and that the cavalry with Peucestas was not far off, attempted to assemble them all and fight a cavalry battle against Antigonus again; for he hoped that if he conquered in battle, he would not only save his own baggage but also acquire that of the enemy.
§19.43.3τῶν δὲ περὶ τὸν Πευκέστην οὐχ ὑπακουόντων, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοὐναντίον πορρωτέρω τὴν ἀποχώρησιν ποιουμένων ἐπί τινα τόπον, ἅμα δὲ καὶ νυκτὸς καταλαμβανούσης ἠναγκάσθη συνεῖξαι τῷ καιρῷ.
But since those with Peucestas did not obey, but on the contrary made their retreat further away to a certain place, and at the same time night was coming on, he was forced to yield to the circumstance.
§19.43.4Ἀντίγονος δὲ τοὺς ἱππεῖς εἰς δύο μέρη διελόμενος τοὺς μὲν αὐτὸς ἔχων ἐφήδρευε τοῖς περὶ τὸν Εὐμενῆ, τὴν ὁρμὴν αὐτῶν ἀποθεωρῶν, τοὺς δʼ ἄλλους παραδοὺς Πίθωνι προσέταξεν ἐπιθέσθαι τοῖς ἀργυράσπισι μεμονωμένοις τῆς τῶν ἱππέων βοηθείας.
Antigonus, having divided the cavalry into two parts, himself held one part and watched those with Eumenes, observing their movement, while committing the others to Pithon, he ordered him to attack the Silver Shields, who were isolated from the support of the cavalry.
§19.43.5ταχὺ δʼ αὐτοῦ τὸ προσταχθὲν συντελοῦντος οἱ Μακεδόνες εἰς πλινθίον ἑαυτοὺς ποιήσαντες ἀσφαλῶς ἀπεχώρησαν ἐπὶ τὸν ποταμὸν καὶ τῶν περὶ τὸν Πευκέστην κατηγόρουν ὡς αἰτίων γεγενημένων τῆς τῶν ἱππέων ἥττης.
And as he quickly executed what was ordered, the Macedonians, having formed themselves into a square, withdrew safely to the river, and accused those with Peucestas of having been the cause of the defeat of the cavalry.
καταντησάντων δὲ καὶ τῶν περὶ τὸν Εὐμενῆ περὶ λύχνων ἁφὰς συνελθόντες ἐβουλεύοντο τί χρὴ πράττειν.
When those with Eumenes also arrived about the lighting of lamps, they gathered together and deliberated on what they ought to do.
§19.43.6οἱ μὲν οὖν σατράπαι τὴν ταχίστην ἔφησαν δεῖν ἀποχωρεῖν εἰς τὰς ἄνω σατραπείας, ὁ δʼ Εὐμενὴς ἀπεφαίνετο μένειν καὶ διαγωνίζεσθαι, τῆς μὲν τῶν ἐναντίων φάλαγγος συντετριμμένης, τῆς δὲ τῶν ἱππέων δυνάμεως ἐφαμίλλου παρʼ ἀμφοτέροις οὔσης.
The satraps, on the one hand, said that they must retreat as quickly as possible to the upper satrapies, but Eumenes, on the other hand, declared that they should remain and fight it out, since the phalanx of the enemy had been crushed and the force of the cavalry was equal on both sides.
§19.43.7οἱ δὲ Μακεδόνες οὐδετέροις ἔφασαν ὑπακούσεσθαι, τῆς ἀποσκευῆς αὐτῶν ἡλωκυίας καὶ παρὰ τοῖς πολεμίοις ὄντων τέκνων καὶ γυναικῶν καὶ πολλῶν ἄλλων ἀναγκαίων σωμάτων.
But the Macedonians said they would obey neither, since their baggage had been captured and their children, wives, and many other necessary persons were in the hands of the enemy.
§19.43.8τότε μὲν οὖν διελύθησαν οὐδεμίαν συμπεφωνημένην γνώμην βεβαιώσαντες· μετὰ δὲ ταῦθʼ οἱ Μακεδόνες λάθρᾳ διαπρεσβευσάμενοι πρὸς Ἀντίγονον τὸν μὲν Εὐμενῆ συναρπάσαντες παρέδωκαν, τὰς δʼ ἀποσκευὰς κομισάμενοι καὶ πίστεις λαβόντες κατετάχθησαν εἰς τὸ στρατόπεδον.
At that time, therefore, they dispersed without confirming any agreed opinion; but after this, the Macedonians, having secretly sent envoys to Antigonus, seized Eumenes and delivered him up, and having recovered their baggage and received pledges, they were stationed in his camp.
§19.43.9τὸ παραπλήσιον δʼ οἵ τε σατράπαι καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἡγεμόνων τε καὶ στρατιωτῶν οἱ πλεῖστοι, τὸν στρατηγὸν ἐγκαταλιπόντες, τῆς ἰδίας ἀσφαλείας μόνον ἐφρόντισαν.
In like manner, the satraps and most of the other officers and soldiers, deserting their general, cared only for their own safety.
