Rise of Agathocles and Conflict with Sostratus

Passage 80 of 301 · Greek

Summary

Agathocles became a chiliarch through the patronage of the wealthy Damas and married his widow, becoming rich. He later served in an expedition to relieve Croton but clashed with the commanders Heracleides and Sostratus, failing to convince the citizens of their tyrannical designs.

For a certain Damas, who was numbered among the illustrious men in Syracuse, became enamoured of Agathocles, and at first, by supplying him with everything abundantly, he became the cause of his amassing a moderate fortune; and after this, having been elected general against Acragas, when one of the chiliarchs died, he appointed him to that man's place.
And even before this campaign, Agathocles was highly conspicuous because of the size of his weapons; for he made it a practice in the armed exercises to wear a suit of armor of such size that no one of the others was able easily to handle the weight of the weapons.
πολὺ δʼ ἔτι μᾶλλον γενόμενος χιλίαρχος περιεποιήσατο δόξαν, φιλοκίνδυνος μὲν ὢν καὶ παράβολος ἐν ταῖς μάχαις, ἰταμὸς δὲ καὶ πρόχειρος ἐν ταῖς δημηγοίαις.
When he became a chiliarch, he acquired a much greater reputation, being fond of danger and reckless in battles, and bold and ready in his public speeches.
τοῦ δὲ Δάμαντος νόσῳ τελευτήσαντος καὶ τὴν οὐσίαν καταλιπόντος τῇ γυναικὶ ταύτην ἔγημε καὶ τῶν πλουσιωτάτων εἷς ἠριθμεῖτο.
When Damas died of disease and left his property to his wife, Agathocles married her and was numbered among the richest men.
After this, when the Crotoniates were being besieged by the Bruttians, the Syracusans sent a strong force, of which Antander, the brother of Agathocles, was general along with others, while Heracleides and Sostratus held the supreme command over the whole, men who had spent the greater part of their lives in conspiracies, murders, and great impieties; concerning whom the preceding book contains the details.
Agathocles also served with them, being well known by the people and appointed to a chiliarch's command. He, at first, having proved himself the bravest in the battles against the barbarians, was deprived of the prize of valor by Sostratus and his faction because of jealousy.
§19.3.5ἐφʼ οἷς περιαλγὴς γενόμενος αὐτοὺς ὡς διεγνωκότας ἐπιθέσθαι τυραννίδι κατηγόρησεν ἐν τῷ δήμῳ.
Being deeply grieved at this, he accused them before the people of having resolved to set up a tyranny.
οὐ προσεχόντων δὲ τῶν Συρακοσίων ταῖς διαβολαῖς οἱ μὲν περὶ Σώστρατον ἐδυνάστευσαν τῆς πατρίδος μετὰ τὴν ἐκ Κρότωνος ἐπάνοδον.
But since the Syracusans paid no attention to these accusations, Sostratus and his faction, after their return from Croton, established their dominance over the fatherland.

Notes

  1. §19.3.1αἴτιος ἐγένετο σύμμετρον αὐτὸν οὐσίαν συλλέξασθαι — The accusative αὐτόν serves as the subject of the infinitive συλλέξασθαι. The phrase αἴτιος γίγνομαι ("become the cause of") takes an accusative with infinitive construction, meaning "became the cause of his amassing...".
  2. §19.3.2τηλικαύτην τὸ μέγεθος — the noun τὸ μέγεθος is an accusative of specification (or respect), qualifying the adjective τηλικαύτην to mean "of such size in terms of its magnitude."
  3. §19.3.4ἀφῃρέθη τὴν τῶν ἀριστείων τιμὴν — The verb ἀφαιρέω takes a double accusative ("deprive someone of something"). When it is put into the passive (ἀφῃρέθη), the accusative denoting the thing taken away (τὴν τῶν ἀριστείων τιμὴν) is retained as a retained accusative.
  4. §19.3.5αὐτοὺς ὡς διεγνωκότας ἐπιθέσθαι τυραννίδι — The conjunction ὡς followed by the participle διεγνωκότας expresses the subjective grounds or alleged purpose of the accuser (Agathocles), modifying the object αὐτούς of the main verb κατηγόρησεν ("accused them as having resolved to...").
