§19.110.1Ἀγαθοκλῆς δὲ τηλικαύτῃ συμφορᾷ περιπεσὼν τοὺς ἐκ τῆς τροπῆς διασωθέντας ἀνέλαβεν καὶ τὴν παρεμβολὴν ἐμπρήσας εἰς Γέλαν ἀπεχώρησε.
Agathocles, having fallen into such a great disaster, gathered those who had saved themselves from the rout and, after setting fire to the camp, retreated to Gela.
διαδόντος δʼ αὐτοῦ λόγον ὡς κατὰ σπουδὴν εἰς Συρακούσσας ἀναζευγνύειν διέγνωκε, τριακόσιοι τῶν ἐκ Λιβύης ἱππέων κατὰ τὴν χώραν περιέπεσόν τισι τῶν Ἀγαθοκλέους στρατιωτῶν.
When he spread a report that he had decided to depart in haste for Syracuse, three hundred of the cavalry from Libya fell in with some of the soldiers of Agathocles in the territory.
ὧν εἰπόντων ὡς Ἀγαθοκλῆς εἰς Συρακούσσας ἀποκεχώρηκεν, εἰσῆλθον εἰς Γέλαν ὡς φίλοι καὶ διαψευσθέντες τῆς ἐλπίδος κατηκοντίσθησαν.
Since these soldiers said that Agathocles had retreated to Syracuse, they entered Gela as friends, but, being deceived in their expectation, they were struck down with javelins.
§19.110.2ὁ δʼ Ἀγαθοκλῆς συνέκλεισεν αὑτὸν εἰς τὴν Γέλαν, οὐκ ἀδυνατῶν εἰς Συρακούσσας διασωθῆναι, βουλόμενος δὲ περισπάσαι τοὺς Καρχηδονίους πρὸς τὴν πολιορκίαν τῆς Γέλας, ἵνʼ οἱ Συρακόσιοι πολλὴν ἄδειαν σχῶσι συγκομίσαι τοὺς καρπούς, ἀναγκάζοντος τοῦ καιροῦ.
Agathocles shut himself up in Gela, not because he was unable to escape safely to Syracuse, but because he wished to distract the Carthaginians to the siege of Gela, so that the Syracusans might have great security to harvest their crops, since the season made this urgent.
§19.110.3ὁ δʼ Ἀμίλκας τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἐπεχείρει πολιορκεῖν τὴν Γέλαν, πυνθανόμενος δὲ ἐν ταύτῃ καὶ δύναμιν εἶναι τὴν ἀμυνομένην καὶ πάντων εὐπορεῖν τὸν Ἀγαθοκλέα ταύτης μὲν ἀπέστη τῆς ἐπιβολῆς, τὰ δὲ φρούρια καὶ τὰς πόλεις ἐπιπορευόμενος προσήγετο καὶ πᾶσιν ἐχρῆτο φιλανθρώπως, ἐκκαλούμενος τοὺς Σικελιώτας πρὸς εὔνοιαν.
Hamilcar at first attempted to besiege Gela, but when he learned that there was a defending force in it and that Agathocles was well supplied with everything, he desisted from this attempt, and going about the fortresses and cities, he won them over and treated everyone with benevolence, calling forth the goodwill of the Siceliots.
καὶ Καμαριναῖοι μὲν καὶ Λεοντῖνοι, πρὸς δὲ τούτοις Καταναῖοι καὶ Ταυρομενῖται παραχρῆμα πρέσβεις ἐκπέμψαντες προσέθεντο Καρχηδονίοις·
And the Camarinaeans and Leontines, and in addition to these, the Catanaeans and Tauromenitans, immediately sent envoys and allied themselves with the Carthaginians.
§19.110.4μετʼ ὀλίγας δʼ ἡμέρας οἵ τε Μεσσήνιοι καὶ Ἀβακαινῖνοι καὶ συχναὶ τῶν πόλεων ἀλλήλας φθάνουσαι πρὸς Ἀμίλκαν ἀφίσταντο· τοσαύτη τοῖς ὄχλοις ἐνέπεσεν ὁρμὴ μετὰ τὴν ἧτταν διὰ τὸ πρὸς τὸν τύραννον μίσος.
After a few days, the Messenians and the Abacaenians and many of the cities, anticipating one another, revolted to Hamilcar; so great an impulse fell upon the multitudes after the defeat because of their hatred for the tyrant.
§19.110.5ὁ δʼ Ἀγαθοκλῆς ἀπαγαγὼν τὴν ὑπολελειμμένην δύναμιν εἰς Συρακούσσας τὰ πεπονηκότα τῶν τειχῶν ἐπεσκεύαζε καὶ τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς χώρας σῖτον ἀπεκόμιζε, διανοούμενος τῆς μὲν πόλεως τὴν ἱκανὴν ἀπολιπεῖν φυλακήν, τῆς δὲ δυνάμεως τὴν κρατίστην μετάγειν εἰς Λιβύην καὶ μετατιθέναι τὸν πόλεμον εἰς τὴν ἤπειρον ἐκ τῆς νήσου.
Agathocles, having led the remaining force back to Syracuse, repaired the damaged parts of the walls and brought in the grain from the countryside, intending to leave a sufficient guard for the city, but to transport the best part of the force to Libya and transfer the war from the island to the mainland.
ἡμεῖς δὲ κατὰ τὴν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρόθεσιν τὴν εἰς Λιβύην Ἀγαθοκλέους διάβασιν ἀρχὴν ποιησόμεθα τῆς ἑπομένης βίβλου.
