§18.40.1Ἀντίγονος δὲ τῆς Ἀσίας ἀποδεδειγμένος στρατηγὸς διαπολεμήσων πρὸς Εὐμενῆ ἤθροισεν ἐκ τῆς χειμασίας τὰς δυνάμεις.
Antigonus, having been appointed general of Asia to carry on the war against Eumenes, assembled his forces from their winter quarters.
παρασκευασάμενος δὲ τὰ πρὸς τὴν μάχην προῆγεν ἐπὶ τὸν Εὐμενῆ, διατρίβοντα περὶ Καππαδοκίαν.
Having made preparations for the battle, he advanced against Eumenes, who was tarrying about Cappadocia.
§18.40.2ὁ δʼ Εὐμενὴς, ἀποστάντος ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ τινος τῶν ἐπιφανῶν ἡγεμόνων ὀνόματι Περδίκκου, στρατοπεδεύοντος ἀπὸ τριῶν ἡμερῶν ὁδοῦ μετὰ τῶν συναποστάντων στρατιωτῶν πεζῶν μὲν τρισχιλίων, ἱππέων δὲ πεντακοσίων, ἐξέπεμψεν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν Φοίνικα τὸν Τενέδιον, ἔχοντα πεζοὺς μὲν ἐπιλέκτους τετρακισχιλίους, ἱππεῖς δὲ χιλίους.
But Eumenes, since one of his illustrious commanders named Perdiccas had revolted from him and was encamped at a distance of three days' journey with the soldiers who had revolted with him, numbering three thousand infantry and five hundred cavalry, sent against him Phoenix of Tenedos, who had four thousand select infantry and a thousand cavalry.
§18.40.3οὗτος δὲ νυκτοπορίᾳ συντόνῳ χρησάμενος προσέπεσε τοῖς ἀποστάταις ἀπροσδοκήτως περὶ δευτέραν φυλακὴν νυκτερινήν· καταλαβὼν δʼ αὐτοὺς κοιμωμένους τόν τε Περδίκκαν ἐζώγρησε καὶ τῆς δυνάμεως ἐγκρατὴς ἐγένετο.
He, having made a vigorous night march, fell upon the rebels unexpectedly about the second watch of the night; and finding them asleep, he took Perdiccas alive and got possession of his force.
§18.40.4Εὐμενὴς δὲ τοὺς αἰτιωτάτους τῆς ἀποστάσεως ἡγεμόνας ἐθανάτωσε· τοὺς δὲ στρατιώτας τοῖς ἄλλοις ἀναμίξας καὶ φιλανθρώπως προσενεχθεὶς ἰδίους ταῖς εὐνοίαις ἐποιήσατο.
Eumenes put to death the commanders who were chiefly responsible for the revolt; but the soldiers he mixed with the others, and by treating them kindly, made them his own through goodwill.
§18.40.5μετὰ δὲ ταῦθʼ ὁ μὲν Ἀντίγονος διαπεμψάμενος πρὸς Ἀπολλωνίδην τινά, τῶν ἱππέων ἀφηγούμενον παρʼ Εὐμενεῖ, μεγάλαις ἐπαγγελίαις διʼ ἀπορρήτων ἔπεισε προδότην γενέσθαι καὶ κατὰ τὴν μάχην αὐτομολῆσαι.
After this, Antigonus sent a message to a certain Apollonides, who commanded the cavalry under Eumenes, and by great promises in secret persuaded him to become a traitor and desert during the battle.
§18.40.6τοῦ δʼ Εὐμενοῦς στρατοπεδεύοντος τῆς Καππαδοκίας ἔν τισιν εὐθέτοις πεδίοις πρὸς ἱππομαχίαν ἐπιβαλὼν ὁ Ἀντίγονος μετὰ πάσης τῆς δυνάμεως κατελάβετο τὴν ὑπερκειμένην τῶν πεδίων ὑπωρίαν.
When Eumenes was encamped in certain plains of Cappadocia well suited for cavalry combat, Antigonus came upon him with his entire force and seized the foothills overlooking the plains.
§18.40.7εἶχε δʼ ὁ μὲν Ἀντίγονος κατʼ ἐκείνους τοὺς καιροὺς πεζοὺς μὲν πλείω τῶν μυρίων, ὧν ἦσαν οἱ ἡμίσεις Μακεδόνες, θαυμαστοὶ κατὰ τὰς ἀνδραγαθίας, ἱππεῖς δὲ δισχιλίους, ἐλέφαντας δὲ τριάκοντα, ὁ δʼ Εὐμενὴς πεζοὺς μὲν οὐκ ἐλάττους τῶν δισμυρίων, ἱππεῖς δὲ πεντακισχιλίους.
Antigonus had at that time more than ten thousand infantry, of whom half were Macedonians, admirable for their valor, and two thousand cavalry and thirty elephants; Eumenes had not fewer than twenty thousand infantry and five thousand cavalry.
§18.40.8γενομένης δὲ μάχης ἰσχυρᾶς καὶ τοῦ Ἀπολλωνίδου μετὰ τῶν περὶ αὐτὸν ἱππέων ποιήσαντος ἀλόγως ἀπὸ τῶν ἰδίων διάστασιν ἐνίκησεν ὁ Ἀντίγονος καὶ ἀνεῖλεν τῶν ἐναντίων εἰς ὀκτακισχιλίους.
When a fierce battle took place and Apollonides with the cavalry under him unreasonably made a separation from his own men, Antigonus won the victory and slew about eight thousand of his opponents.
ἐκυρίευσε δὲ καὶ τῆς ἀποσκευῆς ἁπάσης, ὥστε τοὺς περὶ τὸν Εὐμενῆ στρατιώτας διὰ μὲν τὴν ἧτταν καταπλαγῆναι, διὰ δὲ τὴν ἀπώλειαν τῆς ἀποσκευῆς ἀθυμῆσαι.
He also became master of all the baggage, so that the soldiers with Eumenes were struck with terror because of the defeat, and disheartened because of the loss of their baggage.
