§18.29.1Περδίκκας γὰρ ὑφορώμενος αὐτοῦ τὴν αὔξησιν αὐτὸς μὲν ἔκρινε μετὰ τῶν βασιλέων τῷ πλείστῳ μέρει τῆς δυνάμεως στρατεύειν ἐπὶ τὴν Αἴγυπτον, Εὐμενῆ δʼ ἐξέπεμψεν ἐπὶ τὸν Ἑλλήσποντον κωλύσοντα τοὺς περὶ τὸν Ἀντίπατρον καὶ Κρατερὸν διαβαίνειν εἰς τὴν Ἀσίαν, δοὺς αὐτῷ τὴν ἁρμόζουσαν δύναμιν.
For Perdiccas, viewing with suspicion the growth of his power, decided that he himself with the kings should march against Egypt with the greater part of the army, and sent Eumenes to the Hellespont to prevent Antipater and Craterus from crossing into Asia, giving him a suitable force.
§18.29.2συνεξέπεμψε δὲ καὶ τῶν ἀξιολόγων ἡγεμόνων τοὺς ἱκανούς, ὧν ἦσαν ἐπιφανέστατοι Ἀλκέτας ὁ ἀδελφὸς καὶ Νεοπτόλεμος, καὶ τούτοις παρεκελεύσατο πάντα πειθαρχεῖν Εὐμενεῖ διά τε τὴν στρατηγίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ διὰ τὴν τῆς πίστεως βέβαιότητα.
And he also sent along a sufficient number of the noteworthy leaders, of whom the most illustrious were his brother Alcetas and Neoptolemus, and commanded these to obey Eumenes in all things because of his generalship and the stability of his loyalty.
§18.29.3ὁ δʼ Εὐμενὴς μετὰ τῆς δοθείσης δυνάμεως παρελθὼν ἐπὶ τὸν Ἑλλήσποντον καὶ προκατασκευασάμενος ἐκ τῆς ἰδίας σατραπείας ἵππων πλῆθος ἐκόσμησε τὴν στρατιάν, ἐλλειπῆ καθεστῶσαν κατὰ τοῦτο τὸ μέρος.
Now Eumenes, having arrived at the Hellespont with the force given to him and having beforehand provided a multitude of horses from his own satrapy, equipped his army, which was deficient in this department.
§18.29.4τῶν δὲ περὶ Κρατερὸν καὶ Ἀντίπατρον περαιωσάντων τὰς δυνάμεις ἐκ τῆς Εὐρώπης ὁ μὲν Νεοπτόλεμος φθονήσας τῷ Εὐμενεῖ καὶ περὶ αὑτὸν ἔχων Μακεδονικὴν δύναμιν ἀξιόλογον λάθρᾳ διεπρεσβεύσατο πρὸς τοὺς περὶ τὸν Ἀντίπατρον καὶ συνθέμενος κοινοπραγίαν ἐπεβούλευσε τῷ Εὐμενεῖ.
When Craterus and Antipater had transported their forces from Europe, Neoptolemus, envying Eumenes and having around himself a noteworthy Macedonian force, secretly sent envoys to Antipater and his men, and having agreed upon a joint action, plotted against Eumenes.
καταφανὴς δὲ γενόμενος καὶ συναναγκασθεὶς μάχην συνάψαι αὐτός τε ἐκινδύνευσεν ἀναιρεθῆναι καὶ τὴν δύναμιν σχεδὸν ἅπασαν ἀπέβαλεν· §18.29.5ὁ γὰρ Εὐμενὴς νικήσας καὶ πολλοὺς ἀνελὼν τὸ λοιπόν τε πλῆθος τῶν στρατιωτῶν προσηγάγετο καὶ τὴν δύναμιν τὴν ἰδίαν οὐ μόνον διὰ τῆς νίκης ἐπηύξησεν, ἀλλὰ καὶ προσλαβόμενος Μακεδόνων ἀγαθῶν ἀνδρῶν πλῆθος.
But having been detected and forced to join battle, he himself ran the risk of being slain and lost nearly his entire force; for Eumenes, having conquered and slain many, won over the remaining multitude of the soldiers, and increased his own force not only by means of his victory but also by taking to himself a multitude of brave Macedonian men.
§18.29.6Νεοπτόλεμος πτόλεμος μὲν οὖν μετὰ τριακοσίων ἱππέων διασωθεὶς ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως ἀφίππευσε μετὰ τούτων πρὸς τοὺς περὶ τὸν Ἀντίπατρον· §18.29.7οὗτοι δὲ συνεδρεύσαντες περὶ τοῦ πολέμου διέγνωσαν τὰς δυνάμεις εἰς δύο μέρη διελεῖν καὶ τὸ μὲν ἕτερον Ἀντίπατρον ἀναλαβόντα προάγειν ἐπὶ Κιλικίας, διαπολεμήσοντα πρὸς Περδίκκαν, τὸ δὲ ἄλλο μέρος ἔχοντα Κρατερὸν ἐπιβαλεῖν τοῖς περὶ τὸν Εὐμενῆ καὶ τούτους καταπολεμήσαντα καταντᾶν πρὸς Ἀντίπατρον, ὅπως εἰς ταὐτὸ συναχθεισῶν τῶν δυνάμεων καὶ τοῦ Πτολεμαίου προσληφθέντος εἰς τὴν συμμαχίαν δυνατοὶ γένωνται περιγενέσθαι τῶν βασιλικῶν δυνάμεων.
Now Neoptolemus, having escaped safely from the battle line with three hundred horsemen, rode away with them to Antipater and his men; and these, holding a council concerning the war, resolved to divide their forces into two parts, and that Antipater, taking one part, should advance toward Cilicia to wage war to the end against Perdiccas, while Craterus, having the other part, should fall upon Eumenes and his men, and having defeated them, join Antipater, so that when their forces were gathered into the same place and Ptolemy was received into the alliance, they might be able to prevail over the royal forces.
