§18.27.1τούτων δʼ ὁ μὲν πρῶτος ἦν ἔχων ἅρμα τορευτὸν καὶ καθήμενον ἐπὶ τούτου τὸν Ἀλέξανδρον, μετὰ χεῖρας ἔχοντα σκῆπτρον διαπρεπές· περὶ δὲ τὸν βασιλέα μία μὲν ὑπῆρχε θεραπεία καθωπλισμένη Μακεδόνων, ἄλλη δὲ Περσῶν μηλοφόρων καὶ πρὸ τούτων ὁπλοφόροι·
Of these, the first panel represented a carved chariot and Alexander sitting upon it, holding a magnificent scepter in his hands; and around the king there was, on one side, an armed guard of Macedonians, and on the other, one of Persian apple-bearers, and in front of these were armor-bearers.
ὁ δὲ δεύτερος εἶχε τοὺς ἐπακολουθοῦντας τῇ θεραπείᾳ ἐλέφαντας κεκοσμημένους πολεμικῶς, ἀναβάτας ἔχοντας ἐκ μὲν τῶν ἔμπροσθεν Ἰνδούς, ἐκ δὲ τῶν ὄπισθεν Μακεδόνας καθωπλισμένους τῇ συνήθει σκευῇ, ὁ δὲ τρίτος ἱππέων εἴλας μιμουμένας τὰς ἐν ταῖς παρατάξεσι συναγωγάς, ὁ δὲ τέταρτος ναῦς κεκοσμημένας πρὸς ναυμαχίαν. καὶ παρὰ μὲν τὴν εἰς τὴν καμάραν εἴσοδον ὑπῆρχον λέοντες χρυσοῖ, δεδορκότες πρὸς τοὺς εἰσπορευομένους·
The second panel showed the elephants, decorated for war, following the guard, carrying Indian riders on their front parts and on their rear parts Macedonians armed in their customary equipment. The third panel represented squadrons of cavalry imitating formations in battle, and the fourth showed ships equipped for a naval battle. And by the entrance to the vault there were golden lions, looking at those who entered.
§18.27.2ἀνὰ μέσον δὲ ἑκάστου τῶν κιόνων ὑπῆρχε χρυσοῦς ἄκανθος ἀνατείνων ἐκ τοῦ κατʼ ὀλίγον μέχρι τῶν κιονοκράνων.
Between each of the columns was a golden acanthus reaching up by degrees to the capitals.
ἐπάνω δὲ τῆς καμάρας κατὰ μέσην τὴν κορυφὴν φοινικὶς ὑπῆρχεν ὑπαίθριος, ἔχουσα χρυσοῦν στέφανον ἐλαίας εὐμεγέθη, πρὸς ὃν ὁ ἥλιος προσβάλλων τὰς ἀκτῖνας κατεσκεύαζε τὴν αὐγὴν ἀποστίλβουσαν καὶ σειομένην, ὥστʼ ἐκ μακροῦ διαστήματος ὁρᾶσθαι τὴν πρόσοψιν ἀστραπῇ παραπλησίαν.
Above the vault, in the middle of the top, was a purple cloth exposed to the air, holding a very large golden crown of olive; when the sun cast its rays upon it, it produced a gleaming and shimmering brilliance, so that from a great distance the appearance was seen to be like lightning.
§18.27.3ἡ δʼ ὑπὸ τὴν καμάραν καθέδρα δύο εἶχεν ἄξονας, οὓς περιεδίνευον τροχοὶ Περσικοὶ τέσσαρες, ὧν ὑπῆρχε τὰ μὲν πλάγια καὶ αἱ κνημίδες κατακεχρυσωμέναι, τὸ δὲ προσπῖπτον τοῖς ἐδάφεσι μέρος σιδηροῦν.
The chassis under the vault had two axles, which four Persian wheels turned, of which the sides and the spokes were gilded, but the part that touched the ground was of iron.
τῶν δʼ ἀξόνων τὰ προέχοντα χρυσᾶ κατεσκεύαστο, προτομὰς ἔχοντα λεόντων σιβύνην ὀδὰξ κατεχούσας.
The protruding parts of the axles were made of gold, having busts of lions holding a hunting spear in their teeth.
§18.27.4κατὰ δὲ μέσον τὸ μῆκος εἶχον πόλον ἐνηρμοσμένον μηχανικῶς ἐν μέσῃ τῇ καμάρᾳ, ὥστε δύνασθαι διὰ τούτου τὴν καμάραν ἀσάλευτον εἶναι κατὰ τοὺς σεισμοὺς καὶ ἀνωμάλους τόπους.
And in the middle of its length, they had a pivot-joint mechanically fitted in the middle of the vault, so that by this means the vault could remain unshaken in shocks and rough places.
§18.27.5τεσσάρων δʼ ὄντων ῥυμῶν ἑκάστῳ τετραστοιχία ζευγῶν ὑπέζευκτο, τεσσάρων ἡμιόνων ἑκάστῳ ζεύγει προσδεδεμένων, ὥστε τοὺς ἅπαντας ἡμιόνους εἶναι ἑξήκοντα καὶ τέσσαρας, ἐπιλελεγμένους ταῖς τε ῥώμαις καὶ τοῖς ἀναστήμασιν.
There being four draft-poles, to each a team of four rows was yoked, with four mules fastened to each team, so that the total number of mules was sixty-four, selected for both their strength and their stature.
ἕκαστος δὲ τούτων ἐστεφάνωτο κεχρυσωμένῳ στεφάνῳ καὶ παρʼ ἑκατέραν τῶν σιαγόνων εἶχεν ἐξηρτημένον κώδωνα χρυσοῦν, περὶ δὲ τοὺς τραχήλους χλιδῶνας λιθοκολλήτους.
Each of these was crowned with a gilded crown, and had a golden bell hanging by each jaw, and around their necks collars set with precious stones.
