Antipater, having dissolved the coalition of the Greeks by means of this strategy, led his entire force against the Athenians.
The people, deprived of the assistance of their allies, had fallen into great difficulty; and when everyone was thronging to Demades and shouting to send him as an ambassador to Antipater to treat for peace, he, though called upon as an adviser, did not comply.
For he had been thrice convicted of illegal proposals, and on this account had become disfranchised and was forbidden by the laws to act as an adviser; but having recovered his civic rights from the people, he was immediately dispatched as an ambassador along with Phocion and certain others.
When Antipater had heard their proposals, he gave answer that he would in no other way bring to an end the war against the Athenians, unless they should entrust all their affairs to him (for indeed, when they had shut up Antipater in Lamia and he had sent ambassadors concerning peace, they had made the very same reply); and the people, not being a match in war, were forced to give over to Antipater all delegation and power concerning the city.
But he, having treated them humanely, permitted them to keep both their city and possessions and everything else; but he changed the constitution from democracy and ordered that the government should be based on a property qualification, and that those who possessed more than two thousand drachmae should be masters of the government and of the suffrage, while all those below the qualification, as being turbulent and warlike, he excluded from the franchise, and to those of them who wished it, he gave land for settlement in Thrace.
These, then, being more than twelve thousand, were removed from their fatherland; but those who possessed the specified qualification, numbering about nine thousand, were declared masters both of the city and of the territory, and conducted the government according to the laws of Solon; and all were permitted to keep their property without confiscation.
However, they were forced to receive a garrison and Menyllus as its commander, who would permit no one to attempt a revolution.
Concerning Samos, they made reference to the kings.
The Athenians, therefore, having obtained peace through unexpected clemency, and henceforth governing without disturbance and enjoying the fruits of their land without fear, quickly recovered their wealth.
Antipater, having returned to Macedonia, decorated Craterus with fitting honors and gifts, and having given him in marriage one of his daughters, Philas, the eldest, helped him prepare his return to Asia.
In like manner, having also treated the other Greek cities with leniency, and having brought together and well established their governments, he obtained praises and crowns.
And Perdiccas, having restored both their city and territory to the Samians, brought them back to their fatherland, after they had been in exile for three years more than forty.
