Now that we have gone through the most noteworthy islands, we shall write about the smaller ones.
For in ancient times, when the Cyclades islands were uninhabited, Minos, the son of Zeus and Europa, ruling over Crete and possessing great land and naval forces, held mastery of the sea and sent out many colonies from Crete; and he colonized most of the Cyclades islands and distributed them by lot to his peoples, and he also seized no small part of coastal Asia.
For this reason, both in the islands and along the coast of Asia, there are harbors named "Harbors of the Cretians" and places called "Minoa." Minos, however, advancing far in his power, and having his brother Rhadamanthys as an assessor in his kingdom, envied him because he was admired for his justice; and wishing to put him out of the way, he sent him off to the furthest parts of the territory subject to him.
Rhadamanthys, spending his time in the islands which lie opposite Ionia and Caria, made Erythrus the founder of the city named after him in Asia, and appointed Oenopion, the son of Ariadne the daughter of Minos, lord of Chios.
These things, then, were done before the Trojan War; but after the capture of Troy, the Carians, having increased in power, ruled the sea, and having got control of the Cyclades islands, they seized some of them for themselves and expelled the Cretians who dwelt in them, but some they inhabited in common with the Cretians who had previously dwelt there.
But later, when the Greeks had increased in power, it happened that most of the Cyclades islands were colonized and the barbarian Carians were expelled from them; concerning which we shall write in detail in the proper times.
