There is in Castabus of the Cherronesus a sacred sanctuary of Hemithea, whose dramatic story is not worthy to be passed over.
Indeed, many and various accounts concerning her have been handed down; but we shall detail the one which prevails and is agreed upon among the inhabitants.
For they say that to Staphylus and Chrysothemis were born three daughters, Molpadia, Rhoeo, and Parthenos by name.
And Apollo, having united with Rhoeo, made her pregnant; but her father, being angry because he believed her seduction had been caused by a man, and for this reason shut his daughter in a chest and cast her into the sea.
When the chest was washed ashore on Delos, she gave birth to a male child and named the infant Anius.
Rhoeo, having been miraculously saved, dedicated the infant upon the altar of Apollo, and prayed to the god that, if the child was of him, he should save it.
And they relate in myth that Apollo at that time hid the child, but later, taking care of his upbringing, taught him the art of divination and bestowed certain great honors upon him.
But the sisters of the ruined girl, Molpadia and Parthenos, who were guarding their father's wine—which had been recently discovered among men—fell into a sleep; during which very time the pigs being reared by them entered, and shattered the jar containing the wine and destroyed the wine.
And the maidens, having learned what had happened and fearing the severity of their father, fled to the seashore and threw themselves down from certain high rocks.
But Apollo, taking up the girls because of his relationship with their sister, established them in the cities of the Cherronesus.
And the one named Parthenos he caused to have honors and a sacred precinct in Bubastus of the Cherronesus, while Molpadia, having come to Castabus, because of the epiphany that occurred from the god, was named Hemithea and was honored by all those in the Cherronesus.
And in her sacrifices, because of the misfortune that occurred concerning the wine, they make the libations with a mixture of honey and water, and it is not lawful for anyone who has touched or eaten of a pig to approach the sacred precinct.
