§5.60.1ἐπεὶ δὲ ταῖς Ῥοδίων πράξεσι τῆς κατʼ ἀντιπέρας Χερρονήσου ἔνια συμπεπλέχθαι συμβέβηκεν, οὐκ ἀνοίκειον ἡγοῦμαι περὶ αὐτῶν διελθεῖν.
Since it has happened that some of the affairs of the opposite Cherronesus are intertwined with the deeds of the Rhodians, I do not consider it inappropriate to discuss them.
ἡ Χερρόνησος τοίνυν τὸ παλαιόν, ὡς μέν τινές φασιν, ἀπὸ τοῦ τόπου τῆς φύσεως ὄντος ἰσθμώδους ταύτης ἔτυχε τῆς προσηγορίας· ὡς δέ τινες ἀναγεγράφασιν, ἀπὸ τοῦ δυναστεύσαντος τῶν τόπων ὄνομα Χερρονήσου προσηγόρευται.
Now, in ancient times, the Cherronesus, as some say, received this name because the nature of the place was isthmus-like; but as others have recorded, it was called after the name of Cherronesus who ruled over those parts.
§5.60.2οὐ πολλῷ δʼ ὕστερον τῆς τούτου δυναστείας λέγεται πέντε Κούρητας ἐκ Κρήτης εἰς αὐτὴν περαιωθῆναι· τούτους δʼ ἀπογόνους γεγονέναι τῶν ὑποδεξαμένων Δία παρὰ τῆς μητρὸς Ῥέας καὶ θρεψάντων ἐν τοῖς κατὰ τὴν Κρήτην Ἰδαίοις ὄρεσι.
Not long after his reign, it is said that five Curetes crossed over into it from Crete; and that these were descendants of those who received Zeus from his mother Rhea and nurtured him in the Idaean mountains of Crete.
§5.60.3στόλῳ δʼ ἀξιολόγῳ πλεύσαντας εἰς τὴν Χερρόνησον τοὺς μὲν κατοικοῦντας αὐτὴν Κᾶρας ἐκβαλεῖν, αὐτοὺς δὲ κατοικήσαντας τὴν μὲν χώραν εἰς πέντε μέρη διελεῖν, καὶ πόλιν ἕκαστον κτίσαι θέμενον ἀφʼ ἑαυτοῦ τὴν προσηγορίαν.
Having sailed with a noteworthy fleet to the Cherronesus, they expelled the Carians who inhabited it, and having settled there themselves, they divided the land into five parts, and each founded a city, giving it a name after himself.
§5.60.4οὐ πολὺ δὲ τούτων κατόπιν Ἴναχον τὸν Ἀργείων βασιλέα, ἀφανισθείσης τῆς θυγατρὸς Ἰοῦς, ἐξαποστεῖλαι Κύρνον, ἕνα τῶν ἡγεμονικῶν ἀνδρῶν, δόντα αὐτῷ στόλον ἀξιόλογον, καὶ προστάξαι ζητεῖν ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ τὴν Ἰώ, καὶ μὴ ἐπανελθεῖν, ἐὰν μὴ ταύτης ἐγκρατὴς γένηται.
Not long after these events, Inachus the king of the Argives, his daughter Io having disappeared, dispatched Cyrnus, one of the leading men, giving him a noteworthy fleet, and commanded him to search for Io in every place, and not to return unless he should obtain possession of her.
§5.60.5ὁ δὲ Κύρνος ἐπὶ πολλὰ μέρη τῆς οἰκουμένης πλανηθεὶς καὶ μὴ δυνάμενος εὑρεῖν ταύτην, κατέπλευσε τῆς Καρίας εἰς τὴν προειρημένην Χερρόνησον· ἀπογνοὺς δὲ τὴν εἰς οἶκον ἀνακομιδὴν κατῴκησεν ἐν τῇ Χερρονήσῳ, καὶ τὰ μὲν πείσας, τὰ δʼ ἀναγκάσας ἐβασίλευσε μέρους τῆς χώρας καὶ πόλιν ἔκτισεν ὁμώνυμον ἑαυτῷ Κύρνον· πολιτευόμενος δὲ δημοτικῶς μεγάλης ἀποδοχῆς ἐτύγχανε παρὰ τοῖς συμπολιτευομένοις.
And Cyrnus, having wandered over many parts of the inhabited world and being unable to find her, sailed to the aforementioned Cherronesus in Caria; and despairing of his return home, he settled in the Cherronesus, and partly by persuasion, partly by force, he ruled over a part of the land and founded a city named Cyrnus after himself; and governing in a democratic manner, he met with great approval among his fellow-citizens.
