§5.45.1μετὰ δὲ τὸ ὄρος τοῦτο καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἄλλην Παγχαιῖτιν χώραν ὑπάρχειν φασὶ ζῴων παντοδαπῶν πλῆθος· ἔχειν γὰρ αὐτὴν ἐλέφαντάς τε πολλοὺς καὶ λέοντας καὶ παρδάλεις καὶ δορκάδας καὶ ἄλλα θηρία πλείω διάφορα ταῖς τε προσόψεσι καὶ ταῖς ἀλκαῖς θαυμαστά.
Beyond this mountain and throughout the rest of the Panchaean country, they say that there exists a multitude of animals of every kind; for it has many elephants and lions and leopards and gazelles, and many other wild beasts of different kinds, wonderful both in their appearance and in their strength.
§5.45.2ἔχει δὲ ἡ νῆσος αὕτη καὶ πόλεις τρεῖς ἀξιολόγους, Ὑρακίαν καὶ Δαλίδα καὶ Ὠκεανίδα.
And this island also has three remarkable cities, Hyracia, Dalis, and Oceanis.
τὴν δὲ χώραν ὅλην εἶναι καρποφόρον, καὶ μάλιστα οἴνων παντοδαπῶν ἔχειν πλῆθος.
And the entire country is fertile, and they say it has especially a great abundance of all kinds of wine.
§5.45.3εἶναι δὲ τοὺς ἄνδρας πολεμικοὺς καὶ ἅρμασι χρῆσθαι κατὰ τὰς μάχας ἀρχαϊκῶς.
And they say that the men are warlike and use chariots in battles in the ancient fashion.
τὴν δʼ ὅλην πολιτείαν ἔχουσι τριμερῆ, καὶ πρῶτον ὑπάρχει μέρος παρʼ αὐτοῖς τὸ τῶν ἱερέων, προσκειμένων αὐτοῖς τῶν τεχνιτῶν, δευτέρα δὲ μερὶς ὑπάρχει τῶν γεωργῶν, τρίτη δὲ τῶν στρατιωτῶν, προστιθεμένων τῶν νομέων.
They have their whole commonwealth divided into three parts, and the first part among them is that of the priests, to whom the artisans are attached; the second part is that of the farmers; and the third is that of the soldiers, to whom the herdsmen are added.
§5.45.4οἱ μὲν οὖν ἱερεῖς τῶν ἁπάντων ἦσαν ἡγεμόνες, τάς τε τῶν ἀμφισβητήσεων κρίσεις ποιούμενοι καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν δημοσίᾳ πραττομένων κύριοι· οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ τὴν γῆν ἐργαζόμενοι τοὺς καρποὺς ἀναφέρουσιν εἰς τὸ κοινόν, καὶ ὅστις ἂν αὐτῶν δοκῇ μάλιστα γεγεωργηκέναι, λαμβάνει γέρας ἐξαίρετον ἐν τῇ διαιρέσει τῶν καρπῶν, κριθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν ἱερέων ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ δεύτερος καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ μέχρι δέκα, §5.45.5προτροπῆς ἕνεκα τῶν ἄλλων.
Now the priests were the leaders in all matters, making decisions on disputes and having authority over all other public affairs; while the farmers, tilling the land, bring their produce into the common store, and whoever among them is judged to have farmed best receives an exceptional reward in the distribution of the produce, being judged by the priests as first, second, and so on up to the tenth, for the encouragement of the others.
παραπλησίως δὲ τούτοις καὶ οἱ νομεῖς τά τε ἱερεῖα καὶ τἄλλα παραδιδόασιν εἰς τὸ δημόσιον, τὰ μὲν ἀριθμῷ, τὰ δὲ σταθμῷ, μετὰ πάσης ἀκριβείας.
In like manner to these, the herdsmen also deliver the sacrificial animals and other things to the public store, some by number and others by weight, with all accuracy.
καθόλου γὰρ οὐδὲν ἔστιν ἰδίᾳ κτήσασθαι πλὴν οἰκίας καὶ κήπου, πάντα δὲ τὰ γεννήματα καὶ τὰς προσόδους οἱ ἱερεῖς παραλαμβάνοντες τὸ ἐπιβάλλον ἑκάστῳ δικαίως ἀπονέμουσι, τοῖς δʼ ἱερεῦσι μόνοις δίδοται διπλάσιον.
For in general, it is not possible to possess anything privately except a house and a garden, but the priests, receiving all the produce and revenues, distribute justly to each one what is due, and to the priests alone a double portion is given.
§5.45.6χρῶνται δʼ ἐσθῆσι μὲν μαλακαῖς διὰ τὸ παρʼ αὐτοῖς πρόβατα ὑπάρχειν διαφέροντα τῶν ἄλλων διὰ τὴν μαλακότητα· φοροῦσι δὲ καὶ κόσμον χρυσοῦν οὐ μόνον αἱ γυναῖκες, ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες, περὶ μὲν τοὺς τραχήλους ἔχοντες στρεπτοὺς κύκλους, περὶ δὲ τὰς χεῖρας ψέλια, ἐκ δὲ τῶν ὤτων παραπλησίως τοῖς Πέρσαις ἐξηρτημένους κρίκους.
And they use soft clothing because they have in their land sheep which excel others in the softness of their wool; they also wear gold ornaments, not only the women but also the men, having twisted collars around their necks, bracelets around their wrists, and from their ears rings hanging down in the same manner as the Persians.
ὑποδέσεσι δὲ κοίλαις χρῶνται καὶ τοῖς χρώμασι πεποικιλμέναις περιττότερον.
And they wear hollow shoes which are decorated with exceptionally varied colors.
