§5.42.1διῄρηται δὲ τοῖς ἐγχωρίοις ἡ χώρα, καὶ ταύτης ὁ βασιλεὺς λαμβάνει τὴν κρατίστην, καὶ τῶν καρπῶν τῶν γινομένων ἐν τῇ νήσῳ δεκάτην λαμβάνει.
The land is divided among the inhabitants, and the king of this receives the best portion, and he receives a tenth of the fruits produced on the island.
τὸ δὲ πλάτος τῆς νήσου φασὶν εἶναι σταδίων ὡς διακοσίων.
And they say that the width of the island is about two hundred stades.
§5.42.2κατοικοῦσι δὲ τὴν νῆσον οἱ καλούμενοι Παγχαῖοι, καὶ τόν τε λιβανωτὸν καὶ τὴν σμύρναν κομίζουσιν εἰς τὸ πέραν καὶ πωλοῦσι τοῖς τῶν Ἀράβων ἐμπόροις, παρʼ ὧν ἄλλοι τὰ φορτία ὠνούμενοι διακομίζουσιν εἰς τὴν Φοινίκην καὶ Κοίλην Συρίαν, ἔτι δʼ Αἴγυπτον, τὸ δὲ τελευταῖον ἐκ τούτων τῶν τόπων ἔμποροι διακομίζουσιν εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην.
The so-called Panchaeans inhabit the island, and they carry both the frankincense and the myrrh to the opposite coast and sell them to the merchants of the Arabs, from whom others, buying the cargoes, transport them to Phoenicia and Coele-Syria, and also Egypt, and finally, from these regions, merchants transport them to the entire inhabited world.
§5.42.3ἔστι δὲ καὶ ἄλλη νῆσος μεγάλη, τῆς προειρημένης ἀπέχουσα σταδίους τριάκοντα, εἰς τὸ πρὸς ἕω μέρος τοῦ ὠκεανοῦ κειμένη, τῷ μήκει πολλῶν τινων σταδίων· ἀπὸ γὰρ τοῦ πρὸς ἀνατολὰς ἀνήκοντος ἀκρωτηρίου φασὶ θεωρεῖσθαι τὴν Ἰνδικὴν ἀέριον διὰ τὸ μέγεθος τοῦ §5.42.4διαστήματος.
And there is also another large island, distant thirty stades from the aforementioned, lying in the eastern part of the ocean, extending many stades in length; for they say that from the promontory extending toward the east, India is seen as a misty shape because of the greatness of the distance.
ἔχει δʼ ἡ Παγχαία κατʼ αὐτὴν πολλὰ τῆς ἱστορικῆς ἀναγραφῆς ἄξια.
And Panchaea has within itself many things worthy of historical record.
κατοικοῦσι δʼ αὐτὴν αὐτόχθονες μὲν οἱ Παγχαῖοι λεγόμενοι, ἐπήλυδες δʼ Ὠκεανῖται καὶ Ἰνδοὶ καὶ Σκύθαι καὶ Κρῆτες.
And the so-called Panchaeans inhabit it as indigenous people, and as immigrants Oceanites, Indians, Scythians, and Cretes.
§5.42.5πόλις δʼ ἔστιν ἀξιόλογος ἐν αὐτῇ, προσαγορευομένη μὲν Πανάρα, εὐδαιμονίᾳ δὲ διαφέρουσα.
And there is a notable city in it, called Panara, outstanding in prosperity.
οἱ δὲ ταύτην οἰκοῦντες καλοῦνται μὲν ἱκέται τοῦ Διὸς τοῦ Τριφυλίου, μόνοι δʼ εἰσὶ τῶν τὴν Παγχαίαν χώραν οἰκούντων αὐτόνομοι καὶ ἀβασίλευτοι.
And those who inhabit this are called suppliants of Triphylian Zeus, and they are the only ones of those inhabiting the Panchaean land who are autonomous and kingless.
ἄρχοντας δὲ καθιστᾶσι κατʼ ἐνιαυτὸν τρεῖς· οὗτοι δὲ θανάτου μὲν οὐκ εἰσὶ κύριοι, τὰ δὲ λοιπὰ πάντα διακρίνουσι· καὶ αὐτοὶ δὲ οὗτοι τὰ μέγιστα ἐπὶ τοὺς ἱερεῖς ἀναφέρουσιν.
And they appoint three magistrates annually; these have no authority over death, but they decide all other matters; and even these themselves refer the most important matters to the priests.
§5.42.6ἀπὸ δὲ ταύτης τῆς πόλεως ἀπέχει σταδίους ὡς ἑξήκοντα ἱερὸν Διὸς Τριφυλίου, κείμενον μὲν ἐν χώρᾳ πεδιάδι, θαυμαζόμενον δὲ μάλιστα διά τε τὴν ἀρχαιότητα καὶ τὴν πολυτέλειαν τῆς κατασκευῆς καὶ τὴν τῶν τόπων εὐφυΐαν.
And about sixty stades distant from this city is the temple of Triphylian Zeus, situated in a plain country, and admired especially for its antiquity, the costliness of its construction, and the natural beauty of its situation.
