The Galatians are tall in body, with moist and white flesh, and as for their hair, they are not only blonde by nature, but they also study to increase this natural quality of its color by artificial means.
For they wash their hair continually with lime-water and draw it back from the forehead to the crown of the head and the nape of the neck, so that their appearance looks like Satyrs and Pans; for their hair becomes thick from this treatment, so that it differs in no way from a horse's mane.
As for their beards, some shave them, while others let them grow moderately; but the nobles shave their cheeks smooth, but leave their mustaches grow freely, so that their mouths are covered.
Therefore, when they eat, their mustaches become entangled with their food, and when they drink, the beverage is carried as if through a sort of strainer.
And they all dine sitting not upon chairs, but upon the ground, using skins of wolves or dogs for mats.
And they are served by the youngest children of suitable age, both male and female.
Near them lie hearths filled with fire, having cauldrons and spits full of whole joints of meat.
And they honor the brave men with the finest portions of the meat, just as the poet introduces Ajax being honored by the chieftains when he conquered Hector in single combat: "And he honored Ajax with the long chine-slices." They also invite strangers to their banquets, and after dinner they ask who they are and what they need.
And they are also accustomed during dinner, arising from any chance occurrence to engage in verbal disputes, to fight in single combat with one another upon a challenge, setting no value on the end of life; for the doctrine of Pythagoras is strong among them, namely, that the souls of men are immortal and that after a designated number of years they live again, the soul entering into another body.
Therefore, also at the burials of the deceased, some cast into the pyre letters written to their deceased relations, as though the dead would read them.
