§4.74.1ἐπεὶ δὲ Πέλοπος ἐμνήσθημεν, ἀναγκαῖόν ἐστι καὶ περὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Ταντάλου διελθεῖν, ἵνα μηδὲν τῶν ἀκοῆς ἀξίων παραλίπωμεν.
Since we have mentioned Pelops, it is necessary to discuss also his father Tantalus, so that we may omit nothing of those things which are worthy of hearing.
Τάνταλος Διὸς μὲν ἦν υἱός, πλούτῳ δὲ καὶ δόξῃ διαφέρων κατῴκει τῆς Ἀσίας περὶ τὴν νῦν ὀνομαζομένην Παφλαγονίαν.
Tantalus was a son of Zeus, and outstanding in wealth and reputation, he dwelt in that part of Asia around what is now named Paphlagonia.
διὰ δὲ τὴν ἀπὸ τοῦ πατρὸς Διὸς εὐγένειαν, ὥς φασι, φίλος ἐγένετο τῶν θεῶν ἐπὶ πλέον.
Because of his noble birth from his father Zeus, as they say, he became a friend of the gods to an exceptional degree.
§4.74.2ὕστερον δὲ τὴν εὐτυχίαν οὐ φέρων ἀνθρωπίνως, καὶ μετασχὼν κοινῆς τραπέζης καὶ πάσης παρρησίας, ἀπήγγελλε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τὰ παρὰ τοῖς ἀθανάτοις ἀπόρρητα.
But later, not bearing his good fortune in human fashion, and having shared a common table and all freedom of speech, he reported to humans the secrets among the immortals.
διʼ ἣν αἰτίαν καὶ ζῶν ἐκολάσθη καὶ τελευτήσας αἰωνίου κατὰ τοὺς μύθους τιμωρίας ἠξιώθη, καταταχθεὶς εἰς τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς.
For which reason he was punished both while living, and after dying was deemed to deserve eternal punishment according to the myths, having been ranked among the impious.
§4.74.3τούτου δʼ ἐγένετο Πέλοψ υἱὸς καὶ Νιόβη θυγάτηρ· αὕτη δʼ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς ἑπτὰ καὶ θυγατέρας τὰς ἴσας.
Of him were born Pelops as a son and Niobe as a daughter; and she gave birth to seven sons and an equal number of daughters.
ἐπὶ δὲ τῷ πλήθει τῶν τέκνων μέγα φρυαττομένη πλεονάκις ἐκαυχᾶτο καὶ τῆς Λητοῦς ἑαυτὴν εὐτεκνοτέραν ἀπεφαίνετο.
Boasting greatly at the multitude of her children, she bragged repeatedly and declared herself to be more blessed with children than Leto.
εἶθʼ ἡ μὲν Λητὼ κατὰ τοὺς μύθους χολωσαμένη προσέταξε τῷ μὲν Ἀπόλλωνι κατατοξεῦσαι τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς Νιόβης, τῇ δʼ Ἀρτέμιδι τὰς θυγατέρας.
Thereupon Leto, being angered according to the myths, commanded Apollo to shoot down the sons of Niobe, and Artemis the daughters.
τούτων δʼ ὑπακουσάντων τῇ μητρὶ καὶ κατὰ τὸν αὐτὸν καιρὸν κατατοξευσάντων τὰ τέκνα τῆς Νιόβης, συνέβη τὴν προειρημένην ὑφʼ ἕνα καιρὸν ὀξέως ἅμα εὔτεκνον καὶ ἄτεκνον γενέσθαι.
When these had obeyed their mother and at the same moment shot down the children of Niobe, it happened that the aforementioned woman, at one and the same time, suddenly became both highly blessed with children and childless.
§4.74.4ἐπεὶ δὲ ὁ Τάνταλος μισηθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν θεῶν ἐξέπεσεν ἐκ τῆς Παφλαγονίας ὑπὸ Ἴλου τοῦ Τρωός, ἀναγκαῖόν ἐστι καὶ τὰ περὶ τὸν Ἶλον καὶ τοὺς προγόνους αὐτοῦ διελθεῖν.
Since Tantalus, having become hated by the gods, was driven out of Paphlagonia by Ilus the Trojan, it is necessary to discuss also the matters concerning Ilus and his ancestors.
