§3.68.1φησὶ δʼ οὖν Ἄμμωνα βασιλεύοντα τοῦ μέρους τῆς Λιβύης Οὐρανοῦ γῆμαι θυγατέρα τὴν προσαγορευομένην Ῥέαν, ἀδελφὴν οὖσαν Κρόνου τε καὶ τῶν ἄλλων Τιτάνων.
He says, then, that Ammon, who ruled over that part of Libya, married the daughter of Uranus named Rhea, who was the sister of Cronus and the other Titans.
ἐπιόντα δὲ τὴν βασιλείαν εὑρεῖν πλησίον τῶν Κεραυνίων καλουμένων ὀρῶν παρθένον τῷ κάλλει διαφέρουσαν Ἀμάλθειαν ὄνομα.
And as he went over his kingdom, near the mountains called Ceraunian, he found a maiden of outstanding beauty, Amaltheia by name.
§3.68.2ἐρασθέντα δʼ αὐτῆς καὶ πλησιάσαντα γεννῆσαι παῖδα τῷ τε κάλλει καὶ τῇ ῥώμῃ θαυμαστόν, καὶ τὴν μὲν Ἀμάλθειαν ἀποδεῖξαι κυρίαν τοῦ σύνεγγυς τόπου παντός, ὄντος τῷ σχήματι παραπλησίου κέρατι βοός, ἀφʼ ἧς αἰτίας Ἑσπέρου κέρας προσαγορευθῆναι· διὰ δὲ τὴν ἀρετὴν τῆς χώρας εἶναι πλήρη παντοδαπῆς ἀμπέλου καὶ τῶν ἄλλων δένδρων τῶν ἡμέρους φερόντων καρπούς.
And having fallen in love with her and united with her, he begot a son, wondrous for both beauty and strength; and he appointed Amaltheia mistress of all the adjoining country, which in shape was very like a bull's horn, for which reason it was called the Horn of Hesperus; and because of the fertility of the land, it was full of every kind of vine and of the other trees which bear cultivated fruits.
§3.68.3τῆς δὲ προειρημένης γυναικὸς τὴν δυναστείαν παραλαβούσης, ἀπὸ ταύτης τὴν χώραν Ἀμαλθείας κέρας ὀνομασθῆναι· διὸ καὶ τοὺς μεταγενεστέρους ἀνθρώπους διὰ τὴν προειρημένην αἰτίαν τὴν κρατίστην γῆν καὶ παντοδαποῖς καρποῖς πλήθουσαν ὡσαύτως Ἀμαλθείας κέρας προσαγορεύειν. §3.68.4τὸν δʼ οὖν Ἄμμωνα φοβούμενον τὴν τῆς Ῥέας ζηλοτυπίαν κρύψαι τὸ γεγονός, καὶ τὸν παῖδα λάθρᾳ μετενεγκεῖν εἴς τινα πόλιν Νῦσαν, μακρὰν ἀπʼ ἐκείνων τῶν τόπων ἀπηρτημένην.
And when the aforementioned woman took over the sovereignty, after her the country was named the Horn of Amaltheia; for which reason later generations of men also, because of the aforementioned cause, likewise call the richest land which abounds in fruits of every kind "the Horn of Amaltheia." At all events, Ammon, fearing the jealousy of Rhea, concealed what had happened and secretly conveyed the child to a certain city Nysa, which lay far removed from those regions.
§3.68.5κεῖσθαι δὲ ταύτην ἔν τινι νήσῳ περιεχομένῃ μὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ Τρίτωνος ποταμοῦ, περικρήμνῳ δὲ καὶ καθʼ ἕνα τόπον ἐχούσῃ στενὰς εἰσβολάς, ἃς ὠνομάσθαι πύλας Νυσίας.
And this city lay on a certain island which was surrounded by the river Triton, and was precipitous on all sides, having at a single place a narrow entrance which was named the Nysaean Gates.
εἶναι δʼ ἐν αὐτῇ χώραν εὐδαίμονα λειμῶσί τε μαλακοῖς διειλημμένην καὶ πηγαίοις ὕδασιν ἀρδευομένην δαψιλέσι, δένδρα τε καρποφόρα παντοῖα καὶ πολλὴν ἄμπελον αὐτοφυῆ, καὶ ταύτης τὴν πλείστην ἀναδενδράδα.
And there was in it a rich land, divided by soft meadows and watered by abundant spring waters, and all kinds of fruit-bearing trees and much wild vine, most of which was trained up on trees.
§3.68.6ὑπάρχειν δὲ καὶ πάντα τὸν τόπον εὔπνουν, ἔτι δὲ καθʼ ὑπερβολὴν ὑγιεινόν· καὶ διὰ τοῦτο τοὺς ἐν αὐτῷ κατοικοῦντας μακροβιωτάτους ὑπάρχειν τῶν πλησιοχώρων.
And the whole place was well-ventilated, and furthermore, exceedingly healthful; and for this reason its inhabitants were the longest-lived of any in the neighborhood.
εἶναι δὲ τῆς νήσου τὴν μὲν πρώτην εἰσβολὴν αὐλωνοειδῆ, σύσκιον ὑψηλοῖς καὶ πυκνοῖς δένδρεσιν, ὥστε τὸν ἥλιον μὴ παντάπασι διαλάμπειν διὰ τὴν συνάγκειαν, αὐγὴν δὲ μόνην ὁρᾶσθαι φωτός.
And the first entrance to the island was glen-like, shaded by tall and dense trees, so that the sun did not shine through at all because of the narrowness of the ravine, but only a glimmering of light was visible.
